Reductive desulfurization of allylic thiols by HS-/H2S in water gives clue to chemical reactions widespread in natural environments

The reduction of allylic thiols to alkenes by hydrogen sulfide in aqueous solutions, a novel reaction that may explain reduction processes widely occurring in natural environments, has been discovered. Its mechanism has been studied and suggested to follow an S(RN)1-like pathway involving radical intermediates undergoing 1,4 hydrogen shifts. [reaction: see text]     

Detection of ppm quantities of gaseous SO2 by o9rganoplatinum dendritic sites immobilised on a quartz microbalance

Sensor devices for the detection of low quantities of SO2 gas have been constructed which comprise organoplatinum receptor sites for the selective recognition of SO2 and a quartz crystal microbalance for the detection of small mass changes at the receptor sites.     

Spectrum of interpolated operators

Let be a compatible pair of Banach spaces and let be an operator that acts boundedly on both and . Let be the corresponding operator on the complex interpolation space .

The aim of this paper is to study the spectral properties of . We show that in general the set-valued function is discontinuous even in inner points and show that each operator satisfies the local uniqueness-of-resolvent condition of Ransford. Further we study connections with the real interpolation method.

     

Evidence of Hofstadter's Fractal Energy Spectrum in the Quantized Hall Conductance

The energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field and a weak lateral superlattice potential with square symmetry is composed of Landau bands with recursive internal subband structure. The Hall conductance in the minigaps is anticipated to be quantized in integer multiples of e(2)/h that vary erratically from minigap to minigap in accordance with a Diophantine equation. Hall measurements on samples with the requisite properties uncover this long searched for evidence of Hofstadter's butterflylike energy spectrum.     

Ferromagnetic hcp chromium in Cr/Ru(0001) superlattices

We report the first observation of a weak ferromagnetic state of Cr in Cr/Ru(0001) superlattices, based on magnetic hysteresis and corroborated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the CrL(2,3) edges. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and Cr K-edge polarized x-ray absorption investigations have shown that the Cr layers thinner than 8 angstroms adopt a slightly distorted hcp structure, accompanied by a large atomic volume expansion of up to 14% compared to the bcc packing volume. The expanded hcp structure clearly induces the observed ferromagnetism, in agreement with theory.     

Growth of Pt thin films on WSe2

The morphology and structure of Pt deposited on a WSe₂(0 0 0 1) van der Waals surface have been investigated by reflection high energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. At room temperature, the initial growth is characterized by the formation of three-dimensional fcc Pt islands with (1 1 1) orientation. In contrast, at higher temperatures of about 450 °C the formation of a novel chemically ordered Pt-Se alloy is observed. Based on the diffraction patterns, a tetragonal DO₂₂-type structure of a Pt₃Se compound is suggested. With increasing Pt thickness, this chemically ordered alloy disappears and an additional superstructure occurs, which is accompanied by the coalescence of the islands. The observed superstructure is attributed to a strong Se diffusion towards the growth surface, forming most likely a PtSe₂ alloy with the CdI₂-type layered structure on the top surface. Due to the lateral lattice mismatch between the Pt(1 1 1) layers and the PtSe₂(1 1 1) top layer, a Moiré pattern with a period of 1.1 nm is created, which might be used as a long-range atomic pattern for further nanostructure growth.     

Correlation of charge transport with structural order in highly ordered melt‐crystallized poly(3‐hexylthiophene) thin films

A series of well‐defined poly(3‐hexylthiophene)s (P3HT) of different molecular weight (MW) and high regioregularity was investigated for charge transport properties in as‐cast and melt‐crystallized films. The semicrystalline structure of the P3HT was characterized by X‐ray scattering and Atomic force microscopy. Crystallization by cooling from the melt led to a substantial increase in crystallinity and a stronger alignment of the crystals in comparison to as‐cast films. The increase in crystallinity went along with an increase in hole mobility of up to an order of magnitude as measured by the space charge limited current method. Additionally, the hole mobility depended on the long period of P3HT lamellae and consequently on the MW. In compliance with the long period, the charge carrier mobility first increased with the MW before decreasing again at the onset of chain folding. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Full wave electromagnetics for simulating high speed quantum well laser diode modulation

A unique discretization scheme that couples Maxwell’s full wave vector field equations self-consistently with nonlinear charge and energy transport is presented. The scheme is used to simulate laser modulation achieved in a simple electrically pumped quantum well laser diode by dynamically heating the degenerate quantum charge gases with high frequency radiation.
