Intramolecular hydrogen bond in substituted 3-hydroxypyridines

To explain the character of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in substituted 3-hydroxypyridines, the chemical shifts in the NMR spectra of the hydroxyl group and the IR spectra were studied. It was established that the stability of the intramolecular hydrogen bond of the O-HNR₂ type in substituted 3-hydroxypyridines increases when compared with the corresponding phenols, while an opposite pattern is observed for bonds of the O-H0₂ N type. An approximate evaluation of the energy of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in substituted 3-hydroxypyridines was achieved. When reacting with bases of the same strength, 3-hydroxypyridine forms more stable complexes than phenol.     

Optically active hydrocarbon polymers with aromatic side chains. II. Poly-(S)-p-sec-butylstyrene

The synthesis of optically active p-sec-butylstyrene (I) has been carried out starting with (S)-2-phenylbutane (II) having optical purity 88–91%. The optical purity of I thus obtained was found to be 73–75%. The polymerization of I with stereospecific coordinated anionic catalysts gave amorphous polymers, as in the case of many other p-substituted styrene derivatives. The fractions obtained from these polymers have very similar rotatory power at 589 nm which is practically equal to that of polymer of I obtained by nonstereospecific radical initiator and of low molecular weight structural models. Accordingly the ¹L_b electronic transition of the aromatic chromophore shows a very low rotatory strength in all samples examined. This result is related to the lack in solution of conformations with a predominant single chirality of the main chain of the macromolecules derived from I.

Zusammenfassung Rhenium(VII) wird mit Tetraphenylarsoniumchlorid durch Verteilen zwischen Wasser und Chloroform vom 100 000fachen Überschuß an Wolfram, 100 00fachen an Molybdän sowie von Kupfer und Nickel abgetrennt. Zur photometrischen Bestimmung wird Re(VII) in der Chloroformphase reduziert und mit -Furildioxim umgesetzt, _530nm= 29 750 l · Mol^–1 · cm^–1.

Photometric determination of small amounts of rhenium in the organic layer after separation of tungsten and molybdenum by liquid-liquid extraction

Rhenium(VII) is separated by extraction of tetraphenylarsoniumperrhenate from a 100 000-fold excess of W, 100 00-fold excess of Mo, and from Cu and Ni. For photometric determination Re is reduced in the organic layer and the colour formed by addition of -furildioxime is used for the measurement at 530 nm; =297501 · Mol^–1 · cm^–1.

On the photochemistry of alpha, beta-unsaturated gamma-aldehydoketones. I. The UVirradiation of 3, 19-dioxo-17-beta-acetoxy-delta-4-androstene

Irradiation of 3,19-dioxo-17β-acetoxy-Δ⁴-androstene ( 2 ) at room temperature in either of its two absorption bands centered at about 245 and 315 nm, respectively, led to products 21, 22 , and 23 (Chart 3). Compounds 21 and 22 result from rearrangements involving intramolecular formal 1,2- (→ 21 ) and 1,3-shifts (→ 22 ) of the angular formyl group, and the formation of compound 23 proceeds through the elimination of the formyl radical and the incorporation of a hydrogen from the medium. Evidence favors the latter process to be a secondary radical reaction rather than a primary photochemical step.     

Solubility product relations in the rare earth hydrous hydroxides

The solubility products for some rare earth hydroxides and their temperature dependence have been shown. Greater solubility is shown for larger atomic radii and for lower temperature.     

Homolytic substitutions in indolinone nitroxide radicals—I: Reaction with aroyloxyl radicals

Indolinone nitroxides undergo a homolytic substitution with aroyl oxyl radicals, leading to two isomers, 7-aroyloxy- and 5-aroyloxy-derivative, respectively, whose structures were assigned on the basis of the ESR hfccs and of the ¹H NMR spectra of the corresponding amines. The presence of aroyl oxyl radicals in the reaction medium was demonstrated by thermal decomposition of benzoyl peroxide in the presence of aromatic acids.     

Comparison of figures of merit for fluorimetric analysis of rhodamine complexes of gallium and indium by excitation with pulsed laser and by xenon arc sources

Optimum conditions have been established for formation and extraction of indium-Rhodamine complexes, and limits of detection found for fluorimetric determination of gallium and indium by means of Rhodamine dyes, using the excitation with pulsed laser and xenon arc sources.     

EPR studies of isotopic exchange involving adsorbed oxygen species on MgO

In the EPR spectra of ¹⁷O₂^? adsorbed on MgO, the hyperfine lines due to ¹⁷O(I = $\text{5}\text{2}$) have been used to monitor the isotopic exchange with gas phase oxygen. The predicted behaviour of the different possible mechanisms (place exchange and/or isotopic exchange) is compared with the experimental results which show that, on MgO at room temperature, isotopic exchange occurs via an intermediate species which is tentatively identified as O₄^?.     

Conformations of luteoskyrin and rugulosin in solution

The pigments Luteoskyrin (Ls) and Rugulosin (Rg) might adopt a priori two extreme conformations, a planar and an angular one. To determine the predominant conformation in solution, the nature of the lowest energy transition of the chromophores and the presence of intramolecular H-bonding have been investigated. The solvent effects on electronic absorption and CD spectra indicated the π-π* nature of the lowest energy transition. Treatments of the electronic absorption results according to McRae and Kosower relations, IR absorption and PMR spectra suggested the presence of strong intra-molecular H-bonds. From these results it was concluded that Ls and Rg adopted in a variety of solvents the most planar conformation.

On Trichlorophosphazo Compounds from Nitriles. III. The Reaction between Acrylonitrile and PCl₃. The reaction of PCl₃ with acrylonitrile at higher temperatures gives CH₂Cl? CCl₂? CCl₂? N? PCl₃ ( II ). On pyrolysis of (II), CH₂Cl? CCl₂? CN (IV) is form- ed. Treatment of (II) with SO, results in CHzCL? CCl₂? CCl?N-P(0)Cl₂ ( III ). At lower temperatures and/or in the presence of PCl₃, acrylonitrile reacts with PCl₃ to give the cis/ trans isomers VIa and VIb .
