ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Archerfish show very short behavioural latencies in response to falling prey. This raises the question, which response parameters of retinal ganglion cells to moving stimuli are best suited for fast coding of stimulus speed and direction. RESULTS: We compared stimulus reconstruction quality based on the ganglion cell response parameters latency, first interspike interval, and rate. For stimulus reconstruction of moving stimuli using latency was superior to using the other stimulus parameters. This was true for absolute latency, with respect to stimulus onset, as well as for relative latency, with respect to population response onset. Iteratively increasing the number of cells used for reconstruction decreased the calculated error close to zero. CONCLUSIONS: Latency is the fastest response parameter available to the brain. Therefore, latency coding is best suited for high speed coding of moving objects. The quantitative data of this study are in good accordance with previously published behavioural response latencies.  相似文献

As shown for biotin lipids (Ref. 1), the formation of perfect 2-D crystalline streptavidin domains can also be observed in the plane of desthiobiotin lipid monolayers. The binding constant of streptavidin with desthiobiotin (Ka = 5·1013 mol−1) is lower than that with biotin (Ka = 1015 mol−1) (Ref. 2). By adding free biotin into the subphase a competitive replacement and a detaching of the streptavidin domains from the desthiobiotin lipid monolayer takes place. Streptavidin domains built at receptor lipid monolayers are still functional. As could be shown, there are two biotin binding sites at each protein molecule that are fully accessible to biotin (Ref. 1). This can be proven by the interaction with biotinylated ferritin and fluoresceinated biotin. Further coupling of an anti-FITC-antibody can proceed and a second protein layer can be formed. Using a bifunctional biotin linker a second crystalline streptavidin layer underneath the first one can be obtained.  相似文献

We report new measurements in four cells of the thermal boundary resistance R between copper and (4)He below but near the superfluid-transition temperature T(lambda). For 10(-7)< or =t identical to 1-T/T(lambda))< or =10(-4) fits of R = R(0)t(-x(b))+R(B) to the data yielded x(b) approximately equal to 0.18, whereas a fit to theoretical values based on the renormalization-group theory yielded x(b) = 0.23. Alternatively, a good fit of the theory to the data could be obtained if the amplitude of the prediction was reduced by a factor close to 2. The results raise the question whether the boundary conditions used in the theory should be modified.  相似文献

We report experimental and theoretical results for two-phase convection in a thin horizontal layer of a fluid with a first-order phase change and heated from below. A top layer of the nematic phase of a liquid crystal is located above the bottom layer of the isotropic phase of the same substance. A horizontal field of 1000 G is applied in order to align the director of the nematic phase. Over some ranges of the thickness of the isotropic phase, and in sufficiently large thermal gradients, the more dense nematic phase can be stably stratified above the less dense isotropic one, with a stable interface between them. Based on the equations of motion derived for this problem by Busse and Schubert [J. Fluid Mech. 46, 801 (1971)], we evaluate the bifurcation lines between the quiescent and convecting states and the corresponding critical wave vectors as a function of the interface position. We report experimental measurements based on Nusselt-number determinations for the locations of the bifurcation lines. They are in good agreement with the theoretical results. We also report approximate determinations of the critical wave numbers which are semiquantitatively consistent with the theory. A great diversity of patterns is observed in the convecting states, including normal and parallel rolls, rolls with defects and disorder, target patterns and spirals, and cellular flow with upflow or downflow at the cell center. These patterns are discussed in terms of the breaking of the mirror symmetry at the horizontal midplane by the interface, and in terms of the orienting effects of the magnetic field.  相似文献

We present measurements of the orientation theta0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in cylindrical cells of aspect ratio 1. Theta0(t) undergoes irregular reorientations. It contains reorientation events by rotation through angles delta theta with a monotonically decreasing probability distribution p(delta theta), and by cessations (where the LSC stops temporarily) with a uniform p(delta theta). Reorientations have Poissonian statistics in time. The amplitude of the LSC and the magnitude of the azimuthal rotation rate have a negative correlation.  相似文献

We report measurements of fluctuation and roll patterns near the transition to Rayleigh-Bénard convection which are consistent with a fluctuation-induced first-order transition, as predicted by Swift and Hohenberg. Above onset, we find convection rolls with noise-induced fluctuations, time-dependent amplitude modulation and roll undulation, and homogeneous dislocation nucleation.  相似文献

We present measurements of the Nusselt number N as a function of the Rayleigh number R and the Prandtl number sigma in cylindrical cells with aspect ratios gamma = 0.5 and 1.0. We used acetone, methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol with Prandtl numbers sigma = 4.0, 6.5, 14.2, and 34.1, respectively, in the range 3x10(7) less, similarR less, similar10(11). At constant R, N(R,sigma) varies with sigma by only about 2%. This result disagrees with the extrapolation of the Grossmann and Lohse theory beyond its range of validity, which implies a decrease by 20% over our sigma range, but agrees with their recent extension of the theory to small Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

We develop a statistical theory of the coupling sensitivity of chaos. The effect was first described by Daido [Prog. Theor. Phys. 72, 853 (1984)]; it appears as a logarithmic singularity in the Lyapunov exponent in coupled chaotic systems at very small couplings. Using a continuous-time stochastic model for the coupled systems we derive a scaling relation for the largest Lyapunov exponent. The singularity is shown to depend on the coupling and the systems' mismatch. Generalizations to the cases of asymmetrical coupling and three interacting oscillators are considered, too. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations.  相似文献
