Mapping the proton unintegrated gluon distribution in dijets correlations in real and virtual photoproduction at HERA

We discuss how the dijet azimuthal correlations in DIS and real photoproduction at HERA probe the differential (unintegrated) gluon distribution in the proton. We find a strong dependence of the azimuthal correlation pattern on Bjorken-x, photon virtuality and the cut on the jet transverse momenta. A rise of the azimuthal decorrelations is observed with decreasing Bjorken-x due to the interplay of perturbative and nonperturbative effects. We predict a strong rise of the same-side jet rate with photon energy for real photoproduction. We discuss conditions for the correlation function to be dominated by hard perturbative gluons and ways of constraining the size of the nonperturbative soft component. We make some predictions for the THERA energy range. The analysis of the energy dependence of the isolated jet and two-jet cross sections in photoproduction would be a new way to study the not yet well constrained unintegrated gluon distributions and to explore the onset of the pQCD regime.     

Inhibited Polymerization of N,N,N-Trimethylammonioethyl Methacrylate Methyl Sulfate

The kinetic features of initiation of N,N,N-trimethylammonioethyl methacrylate methyl sulfate polymerization in the presence of manganese(III) bis(acetylacetonate) nitrate and p-nitrosoaniline were studied by the inhibited polymerization method. The kinetic parameters of initiation were calculated, and participation of the monomer in the initiation stage was established.     

Effect of a pulsed magnetic field on the microhardness of C60 single crystals

Magnetic-field pulses with induction greater than 10 T were observed to influence the microhardness of C₆₀ single crystals. It was established that the magnetic field reversibly alters the bulk properties of the material. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Fiz. 69, No. 2, 110–113 (25 January 1999)     

Measurements of the atmospheric concentrations of nitrogen dioxide using the radiation absorption in a spectral range of 415 nm

The trace atmospheric concentrations of NO₂ are measured with the methods of the diode laser absorption spectroscopy and the phase shift of the modulated radiation. An electronic transition in a range of 415 nm is employed. For a measurement time of 20 ms, the sensitivity of the concentration measurements is about 10^?11 relative to the concentration of air particles (0.02 ppbv). At a time interval of 5–10 min, the reproducibility of the absolute concentration measurements (0.1 ppbv) is limited by the low-frequency fluctuations of the optical parameters of the spectrometer and the calibration system and corresponds to the level determined by the Allan variance.     

Electrical conductivity of nonideal hydrogen plasma at megabar dynamic pressures

The electrical conductivity of a nonideal hydrogen plasma is measured under shock-wave compression to pressures ∼1.5 Mbar. It is found that the conductivity increases sharply (by five orders of magnitude) at a density ρ∼0.3−0.4 g/cm³, reaching close to liquid-metal values ∼10³ S/cm. The data obtained can be described by a nonideal-plasma model taking into account the increase in the number of conduction electrons as a result of “ionization by pressure.” Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Generation and relaxation of reactive stresses in a Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloy upon cyclic temperature variation in the range 293–800 K

The generation and relaxation of reactive stresses in Cu-Al-Ni shape-memory alloy single crystals studied during a single cycle of temperature variation in the range 293–800 K under conditions of the β-phase decomposition (above 600 K) are found to depend on the degree of β-austenite decomposition at the stage of decreasing temperature. The higher this degree, the lower the stresses relaxed and generated upon decreasing temperature and the higher the critical temperatures of the reverse martensitic transitions. Moreover, loading the alloy by reactive stresses during a heating half-cycle causes not only a reversible martensitic shape memory deformation but also an additional austenitic shape memory deformation to occur when the temperature is decreased.     

Geoacoustic monitoring as a means for investigating the state of the lithosphere and for earthquake forecasting

The existing approach to mitigating earthquakes and other catastrophic geological processes stipulates the determination of the site, time, and strength of the anticipated event. However, the disastrous earthquakes of recent years clearly demonstrate that even the most advanced systems of monitoring and warning for seismic and other geological hazards are insufficiently effective. However, by adding the monitoring of the Earth’s acoustic field to the existing systems of observation of so-called precursors and by restricting the observations to a certain region (thus excluding the task of determining the site), it is possible to provide a more adequate forecast of earthquakes and other catastrophic geological processes in this particular region.     

Synthesis and investigation of the biological activity of shortened analogues of luliberin

Five new luliberin analogues with shortened amino acid sequences have been synthesized. The different variants for obtaining the compounds under consideration are discussed. In an investigation of the biological activities of the analogues it was shown that they possess a pronounced action of the course of the ovulation processes in experimental animals.
