Absorptiometric determination of sulphide ion

An absorptiometric method is described for sulphide ion, based on the green colour which is formed when sulphide ions are treated in ammoniacal solution with iron(III) and an excess of nitrilotriacetic acid. The recommended procedure can be applied from 1200 down to 8 ppm of sulphide and is interfered with seriously only by selenite from amongst seventeen other anions examined. The colour system is stabilized by an excess of sulphite. Suggestions are made about the nature of the colour body and its mechanism of production.

Studies in atomic-fluorescence spectroscopy-III Microwave-excited electrodeless discharge tubes as spectral sources for atomic-fluorescence and atomic-absorption spectroscopy

Details are given for the production and operation of microwave-excited electrodeless discharge tubes for use as sources in atomic-fluorescence and atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Special reference is made to the tubes for selenium and tellurium and their spectral characteristics are fully discussed. Optimum conditions are given for producing suitably intense and stable sources.

A brief account is given of Teclu's career and his contributions as a pioneer of the study of flames.     

Application of photon-counting in atomic-absorption spectrophotometry

An analysis is given of the statistics of photon-counting as a means of making measurements in atomic-absorption spectrometry. It is concluded that the simple application of Poisson counting statistics may give an over-optimistic estimate of the error, since other sources of error, such as flame flicker and variable nebulization rate, may be more significant.     

Orientational coupling amplification in ferroelectric nematic colloids

We investigated the physical properties of low concentration ferroelectric nematic colloids, using calorimetry, optical methods, infrared spectroscopy, and capacitance studies. The resulting homogeneous colloids possess a significantly amplified nematic orientational coupling. We find that the nematic orientation coupling increases by approximately 10% for particle concentrations of 0.2%. A manifestation of the increased orientational order is that the clearing temperature of a nematic colloid increases by up to 40 degrees C compared to the pure liquid crystal host. A theoretical model is proposed in which the ferroelectric particles induce local dipoles whose effective interaction is proportional to the square of the orientational order parameter.     

Nonconventional odd-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the second Landau level

We report the observation of a new fractional quantum Hall state in the second Landau level of a two-dimensional electron gas at the Landau level filling factor ν=2+6/13. We find that the model of noninteracting composite fermions can explain the magnitude of gaps of the prominent 2+1/3 and 2+2/3 states. The same model fails, however, to account for the gaps of the 2+2/5 and the newly observed 2+6/13 states suggesting that these two states are of exotic origin.     

Observation of a cyclotron harmonic spike in microwave-induced resistances in ultraclean GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells

We report the observation of a colossal, narrow resistance peak that arises in ultraclean (mobility ～3×10? cm2/V s) GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (QWs) under millimeter wave irradiation and a weak magnetic field. Such a spike is superposed on the 2nd harmonic microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) but having an amplitude >300% of the MIRO, and a typical FWHM ～50 mK, comparable with the Landau level width. Systematic studies show a correlation between the spike and a pronounced negative magnetoresistance in these QWs, suggesting a mechanism based on the interplay of strong scatterers and smooth disorder. Alternatively, the spike may be interpreted as a manifestation of quantum interference between the quadrupole resonance and the higher-order cyclotron transition in well-separated Landau levels.     

Diastereoselective [4 + 4]-photocycloaddition reactions of pyran-2-ones: rapid access to functionalized 5-8-5 skeletons

Fused bicyclic pyran-2-ones with pendant furan side chains and an oxygenated stereogenic center adjacent to the pyranone ring oxygen were prepared via FeCl(3)-catalyzed Michael addition. Irradiation furnished the corresponding lactone-bridged tricyclic [4 + 4]-cycloadducts with good facial selectivity. Surprisingly, the major isomer resulted from approach of the furan from the same face as the protected alcohol. [reaction: see text]
