Numerical analysis of the rotating viscous flow approaching a solid sphere

A numerical simulation is performed to investigate the flow induced by a sphere moving along the axis of a rotating cylindrical container filled with the viscous fluid. Three‐dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a finite element method. The objective of this study is to examine the feature of waves generated by the Coriolis force at moderate Rossby numbers and that to what extent the Taylor–Proudman theorem is valid for the viscous rotating flow at small Rossby number and large Reynolds number. Calculations have been undertaken at the Rossby numbers (R_o) of 1 and 0.02 and the Reynolds numbers (R_e) of 200 and 500. When R_o=O(1), inertia waves are exhibited in the rotating flow past a sphere. The effects of the Reynolds number and the ratio of the radius of the sphere and that of the rotating cylinder on the flow structure are examined. When R_o ? 1, as predicted by the Taylor–Proudman theorem for inviscid flow, the so‐called ‘Taylor column’ is also generated in the viscous fluid flow after an evolutionary course of vortical flow structures. The initial evolution and final formation of the ‘Taylor column’ are exhibited. According to the present calculation, it has been verified that major theoretical statement about the rotating flow of the inviscid fluid may still approximately predict the rotating flow structure of the viscous fluid in a certain regime of the Reynolds number. SURFACE METALLIZATION OF CENOSPHERES AND PRECIPITATORS BY ELECTROLESS PLATING

This paper reports the use of a colloidal Pd^0 catalysis system to metallize the surface of precipitators separated from coal fly-ash, and metals such as Cu, Ni etc. are deposited on the precipitators surface. Alternatively, according to the characteristic surface of cenospheres, an Ag coating catalysis system is adopted to first deposit Ag on the cenospheres surface, followed, if necessary, by the deposition of other metals such as Cu, Ni, etc. on the Ag coating to produce monolayer and multilayer metal-coated cenospheres. The surface characteristics and the morphologies of the metal coatings are examined in detail with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. It can be shown that the quality of metal coatings derived from the Aa coatina catalysis system, is better than that of the colloidal Pd^0 catalysis system.     

Frame Wavelets with Compact Supports for L^2（R^n）

The construction of frame wavelets with compact supports is a meaningful problem in wavelet analysis. In particular, it is a hard work to construct the frame wavelets with explicit analytic forms. For a given n × n real expansive matrix A, the frame-sets with respect to A are a family of sets in R^n. Based on the frame-sets, a class of high-dimensional frame wavelets with analytic forms are constructed, which can be non-bandlimited, or even compactly supported. As an application, the construction is illustrated by several examples, in which some new frame wavelets with compact supports are constructed. Moreover, since the main result of this paper is about general dilation matrices, in the examples we present a family of frame wavelets associated with some non-integer dilation matrices that is meaningful in computational geometry.     

Plant tissue-based chemiluminescence biosensor for ethanol.

A plant tissue-based chemiluminescence biosensor for ethanol based on using mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) tissue as the recognition element is proposed in this paper. The principle for ethanol sensing relies on the luminol-potassium hexacyanoferrate(III)-hydrogen peroxide transducer reaction, in which hydrogen peroxide is produced from the ethanol enzymatic catalytic oxidation by oxygen under the catalysis of alcohol oxidase in the tissue column. Under optimum conditions, the method allowed the measurement of ethanol in the range of 0.001 - 2 mmol/l with a detection limit (3 sigma) of 0.2 micromol/l. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was 4.14% (n = 11) for 0.05 mmol/l ethanol. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of ethanol in biological fluids and beverages with satisfactory results.

Wormhole solution in Bergmann-Wagoner scalar-tensor gravitational theory

We give a Euclidean wormhole solution in the vacuum Bergmann-Wagoner scalar-tensor gravitational theory. We show that this wormhole, unlike others, has complex charge and is a baby universe (half a wormhole).     

Renormalization group calculation of the critical temperature dependence on longitudinal magnetic field for a disordered superconductor model

We describe a calculation ofT _c (P, H) in a model of a disordered superconductor which is based on the de Gennes-Skal-Shklovskii (dGSS) picture of the large cluster in a percolation system. The calculation is done by carrying out successive decimations on the Landau-Ginzburg Hamiltonian describing the links in the model. We calculateT _c (P, H) in the presence of longitudinal magnetic field by evaluating the renormalized Landau-Ginzburg coupling when the renormalized Landau-Ginzburg length equals the percolation link length in the dGSS picture and obtain the approximate analytic form ofT _c (P, H).Work supported by China Natural Science Foundation
