The structure of mixed fluorides Ca1?xSrxF2 and Sr1?xBaxF2 and the luminescence of Eu2+ in these crystals

The structure of the mixed fluorites Ca_1−x Sr_xF₂ and Sr_1−x Ba_xF₂, as well as the structure of the Eu²⁺ impurity center in these crystals, is calculated within the framework of the virtual-crystal method realized in the shell model and pair-potential approximation. The phenomenological dependence of the position of the lower level of the 4f ⁶5d configuration of the Eu²⁺ ion on distance to the Eu²⁺-ligand is derived. The dependences of the Stokes shift and the Huang-Rhys factor on x are calculated for the yellow luminescence in Sr_1−x Ba_xF₂:Eu²⁺. The value of x at which the lower level of the 4f ⁶5d configuration of the Eu²⁺ ion in Sr_1−x Ba_xF₂:Eu²⁺ falls within the conduction band is found. __________ Translated from Fizika Tverdogo Tela, Vol. 45, No. 5, 2003, pp. 823–826. Energy spectrum of <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis> electrons in a plane crystal lattice and in a strong magnetic field

Harper equations are derived for a _px, _py electronic system. Analysis is carried out for extreme points of the quasi-continuous spectrum in the cases when the number of magnetic flux quanta through a unit cell is a rational number and calculations are made for square and triangular lattices as well as for a honeycomb lattice with two nonequivalent atoms. The possibility of application of the results for explaining the fractional Hall effect is considered.

Effect of maltodextrins on the surface activity of small-molecule surfactants

We report on the effect of commercially important polysaccharides (maltodextrins with variable dextrose equivalent (Paselli SA-2, MD-6 and MD-10) on the surface activity at the air–water interface of small-molecule surfactants (sms), possessing different hydrophobic–lipophilic balance ((SSL (Na⁺), the main component is a sodium salt of stearol–lactoyl lactic acid, and PGE (080), polyglycerol ester of C18 fatty acid), and widely used in food products. A marked change of the surface activity of sms was found in the presence of maltodextrins by tensiometry. The combined data of laser multiangle light scattering and mixing calorimetry have suggested that this result is governed by specific complex formation between maltodextrins and sms in aqueous medium. Measurements have been made of the molar mass, the second virial coefficient and the enthalpy of intermolecular interactions in aqueous solutions. The implication of a degree of polymerization of maltodextrins in this phenomenon was shown. The interrelation between the molecular parameters of the formed complexes and their surface activity at the air–water interface has been revealed and discussed.     

Ultrafast carrier dynamics in ferromagnetic InGaMnAs

We have carried out an ultrafast time-resolved differential reflectivity study of a ferromagnetic semiconductor InGaMnAs and made a systematic comparison with low-temperature grown and high-temperature grown InGaAs reference films. Very short carrier lifetimes (2 ps) were observed in InGaMnAs and the low-temperature grown InGaAs film, but not in the high-temperature grown InGaAs film. We attribute the short lifetimes to carrier trapping by mid-gap states introduced during low-temperature MBE growth. Furthermore, at long times, we observed periodic oscillations in the differential reflectivity signal with period 20 ps, which we interpret as coherent acoustic phonons.     

The Characterisitic of Proton-Exchanged LiNbO3 Waveguide Formed by Different Proton Source

Benzoic acid as a source of proton is widely used in the technology of manufacture of proton exchanged ( PE) waveguide .But the diffusing speed of proton is too fast to make the waveguide stable in the pure benzoic acid. The characteristic of waveguide is improved with mixture of benzoic acid and lithium benzoate .     

Microstructure and high-temperature wear resistance of a laser surface alloyed γ-TiAl with carbon

TiC reinforced composite coating on γ-TiAl alloy was successfully fabricated by laser surface alloying with carbon. The fine TiC reinforcing phase had a gradient distribution in the coating, and its growth morphology of TiC in laser surface alloyed coating was in unique faceted platelet-like. The composite coating exhibited high hardness and excellent high-temperature sliding wear resistance.

Enhancement of the Kerr effect for a quantum dot in a cavity

Nonlinear susceptibility of a quantum dot (QD) embedded in a two-sided cavity, is studied theoretically from a weak-coupling to a strong-coupling regime. In the relevance of a quantum logic gate, the corresponding nonlinear phase shifts (Kerr effect) are estimated for coherent wavepackets including one photon on average. In the weak-coupling regime, the phase shift enhances strongly as a function of a coupling constant between the cavity photon and QD, and eventually saturates in the strong-coupling regime. We also show transmission spectra to evaluate the efficiency of the phase shift. Although the efficiency decreases monotonically in the weak-coupling regime, it rises in the strong-coupling regime.
