A charge-transfer host system composed of a chiral 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol cluster and benzylviologen

Chiral charge-transfer (CT) complexes composed of a chiral 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol cluster as the electron donor and 1,1′-dibenzyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride as the electron acceptor serve as a host system for molecular recognition. CT complexes that include guest alcohols show different diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) depending on the included guest.     

Decomposition in large system optimization using the method of multipliers

Although the method of multipliers can resolve the dual gaps which will often appear between the true optimum point and the saddle point of the Lagrangian in large system optimization using the Lagrangian approach, it is impossible to decompose the generalized Lagrangian in a straightforward manner because of its quadratic character. A technique using the linear approximation of the perturbed generalized Lagrangian has recently been proposed by Stephanopoulos and Westerberg for the decomposition. In this paper, another attractive decomposition technique which transforms the nonseparable crossproduct terms into the minimum of sum of separable terms is proposed. The computational efforts required for large system optimization can be much reduced by adopting the latter technique in place of the former, as illustrated by application of these two techniques to an optimization problem of a chemical reactor system.The authors would like to acknowledge the valuable comments given by Professor D. Estimation of the eigenvalues of noncentrality parameter in matrix variate noncentral beta distribution

We consider the problem of estimating the eigenvalues of noncentrality parameter matrix in a matrix variate noncentral beta distribution, also known as multivariate noncentral F distribution. A decision theoretic approach is taken with square error as the loss function. We propose two types of new estimators and show their superior performance theoretically as well as numerically.     

Pressure dependence of elastic behaviour and force constants of GaP

The six third order elastic constants of GaP have been obtained from measurements of the effect of hydrostatic and uniaxial pressures on ultrasonic wave velocities. The valence force field model has been used to obtain the bond-bending and stretching force constants. Confirmatory evidence is added to the hypotheses that zinc blende structure crystals undergo the densification transition under pressure when (1) a modified Born stability criterion that $\text{1}\text{2}\text{(C}{}_{11}\text{? C}{}_{12}\text{)}\text{B}$ equals about 0.2 is reached at the phase transition pressure P_t, and (2) the ratio $\text{β}{}_{\mathrm{t}}\text{α}{}_{\mathrm{t}}$ of the second order bond-bending β_t to bond-stretching α_t, force constants is about 0.1. These findings suggest that a macroscopic shear takes place at the transition     

Selective cleavage of polycyclic cyclopropanes by electrochemical oxidation

Anodic oxidation in acetic acid of polycyclic cyclopropanes, namely tricyclene, cyclofenchene, and longicyclene, followed by hydrolysis brought about stereo- and regioselective formation of the corresponding homoallylic alcohols as the main product in good yields.     

Effect of shear stiffness and concrete wedge cone failure on fracture of a fiber-reinforced plastic rod at an intersection with a concrete crack

Experimental results of model speciments in which FRP rods fractured due to local deformation at a crack intersection in a concrete member were analyzed by a 3D nonlinear finite element method in which orthogonal anisotropy of the FRP rod was considered. The analytical results indicated that accurate prediction of shear modulus of the FRP rod and size of concrete wedge cone failure around the FRP rod was significant to predict deformation and fracture of the FRP rod. FRP rods as reinforcement in concrete members, the small shear modulus, because of the orthogonal anisotropy and the wedge cone failure, may prevent the FRP rod from fracturing at a very low tensile stress due to the local deformation at the crack intersection.Presented at the Ninth International Conference on the Mechanics of Composite Materials, Riga, October, 1995.Published in Mekhanika Kompozitnykh Materialov, Vol. 21, No. 2, pp. 158–166, March–April, 1996.     

Elastic constant pressure derivatives and stability of the bcc phase of InTl alloys

Hydrostatic-pressure derivatives of the elastic stiffness constants have been measured ultrasonically in a bcc InTl alloy of composition near the eutectoid. The shear modulus $\text{1}\text{2}\text{(C}{}_{11}\text{?C}{}_{12}\text{)}$ is small, but does not soften under pressure: the eutectoid reaction is not directly associated with a mode softening shear instability. Anharmonic contributions to the excess vibrational entropy from the q 〈110〉, e 〈1$\text{1}$0〉 modes which stabilize the bcc structure are small compared with the harmonic contributions.     

Constituents of Holothuroidea, 15. Isolation of ante-iso type regio-isomer on long chain base moiety of glucocerebroside from the sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota

An ante-iso type regio-isomer on the long chain base moiety of a glucocerebroside, HLC-2-A, has been isolated from its parent glucocerebroside molecular species HLC-2 composed of iso and ante-iso isomers, from the less polar lipid fraction of a chloroform/methanol extract of the sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota. Reverse-phase HPLC that included a recycling system was effective in separating the regio-isomer from its counterpart, revealing a very close resemblance in structure. Other typical glucocerebroside molecular species HLC-1 and HLC-3 were obtained together with HLC-2. The structures of these glucocerebrosides were determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence.
