Summary Diethyl bromomalonate and bromoacetonitrile, respectively, react with trimethylammonium acetic acid betaine in ethanol to give diethyl tartronate and glycolic acid nitrile, respectively. By analogy, ethyl -chloroacetonate and ethyl bromopyruvate yield the respective hydroxy derivatives which were identified by their osazones2 and3. Under the same experimental conditions, mesoxalic acid and its dimethyl ester, respectively, are formed from dibromo malonic acid and its dimethyl ester and were characterized by their known hydrazones8 and9.

Advanced techniques for all-electrical spectroscopy on spin caloric phenomena

Spin-dependent properties of nanomagnets and magnetic/nonmagnetic hybrid systems have gained a renewed interest after the discovery of spin caloric transport phenomena. To explore such properties in detail, advanced techniques need to be developed. In this paper we report novel approaches to study both the magneto–thermal and magneto–mechanical characteristics of hybrid systems. These techniques involve in particular broadband spectroscopy of spin dynamics and surface acoustic waves in the GHz frequency regime. By these means we investigate ferromagnet/semiconductor hybrid systems to explore spin pumping and the Seebeck effect as well as ferromagnet/piezoelectric hybrid systems to address magneto–mechanical coupling at high frequencies.

Zusammenfassung Bei der Einwirkung vonAc ₂O auf Phenylmalonsäure entsteht über die Dimerisationsprodukte7 bzw.8, welche aus Phenylketen bzw. Phenylketencarbonsäure gebildet werden, 1,6-Diacetoxy-2,5-diphenyl-3H-naphtho[2,1—b]pyran-3-on (1). Diese komplex verlaufende und unerwartete Reaktion ist in allen Einzelheiten aufgekläurt worden.

The reaction of acetic anhydride with phenylmalonic acid via phenylketene, carboxy phenylketene and the dimeric compounds7 and8 yields 1.6-diacetoxy-2.5-diphenyl-3H-naphtho-[2.1—b]pyran-3-one (1). This complex and unexpected result has been studied in detail.

The quinolinetrionesTMCH, PCH, MCH and phenalene trione (PT) do not react with aryl isocyanates toSchiff bases^5a, but react by ring contraction to yield the spiro-imidazolidines2 a-d,3 a-e,4 a-b and5 a-cbd. However, reaction of ninhydrine with aryl isocyanates gives the 1:2 adductes1 a-e. Benzal aniline reacts withTMCH, PCH. andPT to yield known phenoxazine derivatives^2c,11. In contrast,PCH orMCH react with benzylidene benzalaniline to yield theSchiff bases7 a-b. which can be transformed into the bisamine8. comparable to the ninhydrine reaction.
