Influenza viruses are transmitted from human to human via airborne droplets and can be transferred through contaminated environmental surfaces. Some works have demonstrated the efficacy of essential oils (EOs) as antimicrobial and antiviral agents, but most of them examined the liquid phases, which are generally toxic for oral applications. In our study, we describe the antiviral activity of Citrus bergamia, Melaleuca alternifolia, Illicium verum and Eucalyptus globulus vapor EOs against influenza virus type A. In the vapor phase, C. bergamia and M. alternifolia strongly reduced viral cytopathic effect without exerting any cytotoxicity. The E. globulus vapor EO reduced viral infection by 78% with no cytotoxicity, while I. verum was not effective. Furthermore, we characterized the EOs and their vapor phase by the head-space gas chromatography–mass spectrometry technique, observing that the major component found in each liquid EO is the same one of the corresponding vapor phases, with the exception of M. alternifolia. To deepen the mechanism of action, the morphological integrity of virus particles was checked by negative staining transmission electron microscopy, showing that they interfere with the lipid bilayer of the viral envelope, leading to the decomposition of membranes. We speculated that the most abundant components of the vapor EOs might directly interfere with influenza virus envelope structures or mask viral structures important for early steps of viral infection.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The stage at which normal appearing white matter (NAWM) abnormalities first appear in multiple sclerosis (MS) is not clear. The aim of our study was to monitor water diffusion changes over time in NAWM of patients with early MS.METHODS: Out of a consecutive series of patients enrolled in a MR study on clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), we selected 19 subjects who had completed a one year follow-up. The MR scans obtained at baseline and at 12 months were reviewed according to the new criteria on the diagnosis of MS. Lesion load on T2 and T1 weighted images and the trace of the apparent diffusion coefficient in NAWM were measured both at baseline and at 12 months in patients and in 12 healthy controls.RESULTS: In three patients the diagnosis of MS was done at baseline based on MR. Thirteen patients developed MS during the study and in three patients the diagnosis remained "possible MS." TADC in NAWM in patients was significantly higher than in controls at the 12 months' follow-up but not at baseline (controls mean tADC +/- sd = 0.745 +/- 0.02 mm(2)/sec x 10(-3); patients mean tADC(12) +/- sd = 0.767 +/- 0.02 mm(2)/sec x 10(-3); p < 0.02). TADC and T2 lesion load at 12 months were significantly correlated (p < 0.01). Patients exhibiting tADC(12) above a confidence interval had a significantly greater EDSS score at the same time period (EDSS(12) +/- sd = 1.9 +/- 0.5 and = 1.1 +/- 0.4 respectively; p < 0.01).CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that diffusion MR cannot detect alterations in NAWM of patients with a CIS suggestive of MS. After one year, when most patients develop MS, diffusion MR abnormalities in NAWM become apparent. These abnormalities are correlated with T2 lesion load and may contribute to neurological impairment.  相似文献

Abstract

The addition of phenylselenenyl azide to glycals is carried out under conditions that give 2-deoxy-2-phenylselenoglycosyl azides. This regiochemistry is opposite to that obtained under free-radical conditions, which are known to produce 2-azido-2-deoxyselenoglycosides. The addition reaction is carried out with phenylselenenyl chloride and sodium azide in dimethylformamide, and is stereoselective for trans addition. Tri-O-benzyl-d-glucal and di-O-benzyl-l-rhamnal each gave two addition products, in which the phenylselenyl and azido groups were either trans diaxial or trans diequatorial. Tri-O-benzyl-d-galactal gave only the trans diaxial addition product.  相似文献

Nano-sized carbon dusts are suspected of having negative effects on human health. An exact characterization of such particles is necessary to understand possible toxic effects, i.e. in the lung. Observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the carbon dusts are a composite of very small primary particles and larger agglomerates of these. A differentiation of the primary particles and agglomerates according to source is not possible by TEM, however, thermogravimetry investigations in synthetic air atmosphere are helpful. Standardized carbon black and graphite show a single-step oxidation behaviour, whereas ethene soot and diesel soot, for example, show more complex-reaction mechanisms. The results of ethene soot exemplarily demonstrate the oxidation mechanism. In addition to the oxidation reaction to carbon dioxide, a sintering process takes place. To confirm the oxidation mechanism, thermal behaviour of ethene soot has been simulated by kinetic modulation using a three-step reaction mechanism of n-th order. The reaction order indicates a complex mechanism for the first-reaction step. For the second and third-reaction step, a phase boundary mechanism could be suggested.  相似文献

Multivalent interactions can be applied universally for a targeted strengthening of an interaction between different interfaces or molecules. The binding partners form cooperative, multiple receptor–ligand interactions that are based on individually weak, noncovalent bonds and are thus generally reversible. Hence, multi‐ and polyvalent interactions play a decisive role in biological systems for recognition, adhesion, and signal processes. The scientific and practical realization of this principle will be demonstrated by the development of simple artificial and theoretical models, from natural systems to functional, application‐oriented systems. In a systematic review of scaffold architectures, the underlying effects and control options will be demonstrated, and suggestions will be given for designing effective multivalent binding systems, as well as for polyvalent therapeutics.  相似文献

Food and contaminated indoor environments are the most relevant sources of human exposure to polyhalogenated chemicals. This study analyzed for the first time fat residues in kitchen hoods for contaminations with polyhalogenated compounds. A wide range of contaminants was detected in all kitchen hoods (n?=?15) and most of them could be quantified. Between 0.2 and 18 μg polyhalogenated chemicals/g fat were detected, with chlorinated paraffins being the most relevant contaminant group. Aside from the chlorinated paraffins, each kitchen hood fat sample showed a distinct fingerprint. A wide range of old and current-use brominated flame retardants were also detected in the samples. In addition to these contaminants originating from their use in indoor equipment, residues of organochlorine pesticides and semi-volatile halogenated natural products verified that cooking of food, accompanied with the release of contaminants from the heated food, was another relevant source of contamination. Re-analyses of two samples after 3 months only resulted in small variations in contaminant pattern and concentrations. Therefore, fat from kitchen hoods is proposed as an easily accessible matrix to assess contamination of these hazardous polyhalogenated chemicals.

Gold nanowires were synthesized within polycarbonate membranes according to an electroless deposition method, obtaining nanoelectrode ensembles (NEEs) with special electrochemical features. NEEs were coupled with home-produced carbon graphite screen printed electrodes and the electrochemical properties of the original nanoelectrode ensemble on screen printed substrate (NEE/SPS) assembly has been tested for sensors application. Glucose oxidase has been used as model enzyme in order to verify the feasibility of disposable gold NEE/SPS biosensors. Finally, different immobilisation and electrochemical deposition techniques based on either self assembled monolayers of cysteamine (CYS) or amino-propyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) and conductive polyaniline (PANI) molecular wires were used. Spatial patterning of the enzyme on the polycarbonate surface and of PANI wires on gold nanoelectrodes was obtained. Possible direct electron transfer between the enzyme and the PANI modified gold nanoelectrodes has been evaluated.  相似文献

Hydrogenation of amides in the presence of [Ru(acac)3] (acacH=2,4‐pentanedione), triphos [1,1,1‐tris‐ (diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane] and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) produces secondary and tertiary amines with selectivities as high as 93 % provided that there is at least one aromatic ring on N. The system is also active for the synthesis of primary amines. In an attempt to probe the role of MSA and the mechanism of the reaction, a range of methanesulfonato complexes has been prepared from [Ru(acac)3], triphos and MSA, or from reactions of [RuX(OAc)(triphos)] (X=H or OAc) or [RuH2(CO)(triphos)] with MSA. Crystallographically characterised complexes include: [Ru(OAc‐κ1O)2(H2O)(triphos)], [Ru(OAc‐κ2O,O′)(CH3SO3‐κ1O)(triphos)], [Ru(CH3SO3‐κ1O)2(H2O)(triphos)] and [Ru2(μ‐CH3SO3)3(triphos)2][CH3SO3], whereas other complexes, such as [Ru(OAc‐κ1O)(OAc‐κ2O,O′)(triphos)], [Ru(CH3SO3‐κ1O)(CH3SO3‐κ2O,O′)(triphos)], H[Ru(CH3SO3‐κ1O)3(triphos)], [RuH(CH3SO3‐κ1O)(CO)(triphos)] and [RuH(CH3SO3‐κ2O,O′)(triphos)] have been characterised spectroscopically. The interactions between these various complexes and their relevance to the catalytic reactions are discussed.  相似文献
