The electrical fields due to the space charge of positive ions in a plane-parallel discharge gap are measured by means of an electron avalanche. The measurements were made in a N₂-CH₄ gas mixture (5% CH₄) at a total pressure of 210 Torr (20 °C) in a 3 cm gap, at a voltage UD (static breakdown potential). The positive ions are produced by electron avalanches, which are released from a broad area by an UV flash at the cathode. The ions so produced drift towards the cathode with a drift velocity v₊. After a timeT the probe avalanche is started by a second UV flash in the symmetry axis of the charge distribution. From its temporal growth, which is given by the relation\(i_s (t) \sim \delta v\_\exp \left( {\int\limits_0^t {\alpha v\_dt} } \right)\), one can evaluate the space charge field E(z) of the positive ions. The measured fields are in good agreement with those predicted by calculations.

The rotational analysis of the gamma system (A 3Φ - X′ 3Δ) of the spectrum of zirconium oxide

Rotational analyses of the (0,0), (1,1) and (2,2) bands, and a partial analysis of the (3,3) band, of the γ-system (A³Φ - X′³Δ) of the molecules ⁹⁰Zr¹⁶O, ⁹⁴Zr¹⁶O, ⁹⁶Zr¹⁶O have been performed. The measured wave numbers and their assignments are presented up to high quantum numbers. The rotational constants are calculated and an estimate is made of the spin-coupling coefficients. Both states belong closely to Hund's coupling case a.     

Comparison of a conventional extractor with two unconventional extractors

Two specially-made extractors are compared against a standard Soxhlet by using test samples simulating adsorptive and non-adsorptive conditions and containing coarse and fine particles. The unconventional extractors, one with a fixed thimble and the other with a removable thimble, proved considerably faster than the Soxhlet.     

Pressure saturation of SO2(3B1 0,0,0) lifetimes

Lifetime data have been obtained for the decay of SO₂(³B₁ 0,0,0) at 25°C over the pressure range of 1–762 torr. The ³B₁ state was populated by direct absorption to eliminate any possible complications in interpretation due to the participation of excited-singlet manifolds. At pressures greater than about 10 torr, the measured lifetimes are longer than predicted from low-pressure Stern–Volmer parameters. This deviation can be interpreted in terms of Freed's theory on collisionally induced intersystem crossing and provides unequivocal evidence to support earlier speculations that the lengthening of the lifetimes at high pressures is due to saturation in depopulation of the ³B₁ state.
