The electrical and dielectric properties of mercuric iodide were studied at room temperature under various intensities and colours of light in the frequency range 1 Hz–10 kHz. In the high-frequency region (>40 Hz), the real part of the dielectric constant () is almost constant with frequency (f), colour and intensity of light. At lower frequencies, varies nearly as 1/f and monotonically increases with intensity (I) of the yellow (or green) light, whereas it is almost constant with red light intensity. This behaviour is discussed in the view of the different polarization contributions. The imaginary part of the dielectric constant () was found to vary as 1/f over the frequency range studied. This behaviour was observed whether the crystal was in dark or illuminated implying that the roomtemperature ac dark- or photo-conductivity () is independent of frequency. Coherent neutron scattering lengths and total cross sections have been measured on elemental and oxide samples of ordinary Ge and of isotopically enriched substances. From the experimental results the following values were obtained: the coherent scattering lengths (in fm) of the bound atoms Ge(8.185±0.020);70Ge(10.0±0.1);72Ge(8.51±0.10);73Ge(5.02±0.04);74Ge(7.58±0.10) and76Ge(8.2 ±1.5); the absorption cross sections at 0.0253 eV (in barn) for Ge(2.20±0.04);70Ge(2.9±0.2);72Ge(0.8±0.2);73Ge(14.4±0.4) and74Ge(0.4±0.2); the free cross sections for epithermal neutrons and the zero energy scattering cross sections. On the basis of this data, the isotopic- and spin-incoherent cross sections and thes-wave resonance contributions to the coherent scattering lengths have been determined and discussed. Transmission measurements at 0.57 meV on amorphous and crystalline GeO2 yielded for the amorphous sample an inelastic cross section eight times larger than for the crystalline samples. The hyperfine structure (hfs) and isotope shift (IS) in the isotopic chain of the radioactive element radon have been studied for the first time. The measurements were carried out by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy at the mass separator facility ISOLDE at CERN. The IS between 16 isotopes in the mass range 202A222 and the hfs of 7 odd-A isotopes were determined in the transitions 7s [3/2]2-7p [5/2]3 (745 nm) of Rn I. In the model all important phenomena (including the two-dimensional diffusion of minority carriers before their recombination in the active region and the re-emission of radiation) are taken into account. Atmospheric opacity values in the zenith direction are given for a wavelength of 1.1 mm (278 GHz) at the summit of Mauna Kea in the Hawaiian Islands. A total of 75 days is covered during the period 1983–1986. Observations were made on a quasi-continuous basis, with opacity measured every 20 minutes around the clock for significant periods of time. A conversion from opacity at =1.1 mm to the equivalent preciptable water vapor column is given from the measurements of Zammit and Ade, from which opacities at other wavelengths may be derived. We consider the statistical mechanics of the traveling salesman problem (TSP) and develop some representations to study it. In one representation the mean field theory has a simple form and brings out some of the essential features of the problem. It shows that the system has spontaneous symmetry breaking at any nonzero temperature. In general the phase progressively changes as one decreases the temperature. At low temperatures the mean field theory solution is very sensitive to any small perturbations, due to the divergence of some local susceptibilities. This critical region extends down to zero temperature. We perform the quenched average for a nonmetric TSP in the second representation and the resulting problem is more complicated than the infinite-range spin-glass problem, suggesting that the free energy landscape may be more complex. The role played by frustration in this problem appears explicitly through the localization property of a random matrix, which resembles the tight binding matrix of an electron in a random lattice. 相似文献

We use a driving field, of the type first suggested by Evans, to generate a steady heat current in the simplest possible system, a two-dimensional periodic fluid of three hard disks. Hard-disk motion equations can be conveniently derived from repulsive constant-force or linear-force potentials by considering the infinitely repulsive limit of these potentials. We show that the isoenergetic and isokinetic forms of the nonequilibrium equations of motion generate steady-state heat conductivities differing by terms of order 1/N, whereN is the number of particles. The resulting conductivities appear to vary as the logarithm of the driving field strength.
