Stability of the vortex defect in the Landau–de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals

We analyze the radially symmetric solution corresponding to the vortex defect (the so-called melting hedgehog) in the Landau–de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals. We prove the existence, uniqueness and stability results of the melting hedgehog.     

Ergodicity for Nonlinear Stochastic Equations in Variational Formulation

This paper is concerned with nonlinear partial differential equations of the calculus of variation (see [13]) perturbed by noise. Well-posedness of the problem was proved by Pardoux in the seventies (see [14]), using monotonicity methods. The aim of the present work is to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding transition semigroup P_t. We show existence and, under suitable assumptions, uniqueness of an ergodic invariant measure ν. Moreover, we solve the Kolmogorov equation and prove the so-called "identite du carre du champs". This will be used to study the Sobolev space W^1,2(H,ν) and to obtain information on the domain of the infinitesimal generator of P_t.     

Multiple positive solutions of non-local initial value problems for first order differential systems

The paper gives a new and natural method for the existence of multiple positive solutions for first order differential systems with non-local initial value conditions involving linear functionals. The case of higher order differential equations is also considered. The results are accompanied by numerical examples confirming the theory and proving for practice the importance of the bounds in solution localization.     

Fixed Point Theorems Under Combined Topological and Variational Conditions

The new idea is to replace part of the conditions on the operator involved in the classical fixed point theorems of Schauder, Krasnoselskii, Darbo and Sadovskii, by assumptions upon the associated functional, in case that the fixed point equation has a variational form. Fixed points minimizing the associated functionals are obtained via Ekeland’s variational principle and the Palais–Smale compactness condition guaranteed by the topological properties of the nonlinear operators.     

Vectorial penalization for generalized functional constrained problems

In this paper we use a double penalization procedure in order to reduce a set-valued optimization problem with functional constraints to an unconstrained one. The penalization results are given in several cases: for weak and strong solutions, in global and local settings, and considering two kinds of epigraphical mappings of the set-valued map that defines the constraints. Then necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained separately in terms of Bouligand derivatives of the objective and constraint mappings.     

Chain rules for linear openness in metric spaces and applications

In this work we present a general theorem concerning chain rules for linear openness of set-valued mappings acting between metric spaces. As particular cases, we obtain classical and also some new results in this field of research, including the celebrated Lyusternik–Graves Theorem. The applications deal with the study of the well-posedness of the solution mappings associated to parametric systems. Sharp estimates for the involved regularity moduli are given.

The geometry of Hamilton spaces - An introduction

A short introduction of Hamilton, Cartan and Generalized Hamilton spaces is provided. The Hamilton--Jacobi equations are deduced by variational calculus.     

Cohomological q-convexity versus local q-completeness with corners

We show that if (D, π) is an unramified Riemann domain over a distinguished complex manifold X such that D is cohomologically q-convex, then π is locally q-complete with corners. We call X distinguished if for every point x of X there is a holomorphic line bundle $\cal L$ on X (which may depend on x) so that the global sections $\Gamma (X \cal L)$ of $\cal L$ generate its 1-jets at x. Examples of distinguished complex manifolds include all complex submanifolds of C^m × Pⁿ; in particular all Stein or projectively algebraic manifolds.     

Two positive nontrivial solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic variational systems

We obtain existence and localization results of positive nontrivial solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic variational systems. The proof is based on variants of Schechter's localized critical point theorems for Hilbert spaces not identified to their duals and on the technique of inverse-positive matrices. The Leray-Schauder boundary condition is also involved.
