H MAS NMR monitoring of the C-labeled carbon scrambling for propane in zeolite H-ZSM-5

It has been demonstrated that ¹H MAS NMR spectroscopy can be used as a tool for in situ monitoring the reaction kinetics of ¹³C-labeled carbon scrambling in alkane molecules adsorbed on zeolite catalysts at the reaction temperature of 540–570 K. The accuracy of the results and the time resolution are improved compared to ¹³C MAS NMR spectroscopy.     

The Mössbauer effect and collective motions in glass-forming liquids and polymeric networks

Glass-forming liquids, synthetic polymers and biopolymers share essential properties. Dynamic processes in these complex systems are characterized by cooperative motions with wide distributions of time scales, which manifest themselves in broad quasielastic lines in the Mössbauer spectrum. In this article, the application of the Mössbauer effect to the study of structural dynamics in complex systems is discussed.     

Stressed states in domain switching of ferroelectric liquid crystal devices

In this paper we show that the director profile of a low pre-tilt surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal passes through quasi-static stressed states during domain switching under direct drive conditions. Using polarized stroboscopic microscopy, we have observed two quasi-static transmission levels during a domain switching transition from dark to light. This is a result of the directors reorienting into stressed profiles both before and after the chevron interface has switched. By modelling the interaction between the elastic forces and the torque from the applied field, we have determined these voltage dependent director profiles and, by calculating their corresponding transmissivities, have shown very good agreement with the experimentally observed values.     

Fourier transform IR product study of the reaction of CFO radicals with O2 at 298 K

Experimental results are presented of a Fourier transform IR product study at 298 K of the reaction system CFO+O₂ at oxygen pressures between 3 and 250 mbar. Pulsed photolysis of oxalyl fluoride (CFO)₂ or formyl fluoride (CHFO) at 193 nm was used to produce CFO. As stable products we detected bis-fluoroformyl peroxide, carbonyl fluoride and carbon dioxide. The yields of the peroxide and of CF₂O were measured as a function of [O₂]/[precursor] and are discussed qualitatively.     

Multicriteria Semi-Obnoxious Network Location Problems (MSNLP) with Sum and Center Objectives

Locating a facility is often modeled as either the maxisum or the minisum problem, reflecting whether the facility is undesirable (obnoxious) or desirable. But many facilities are both desirable and undesirable at the same time, e.g., an airport. This can be modeled as a multicriteria network location problem, where some of the sum-objectives are maximized (push effect) and some of the sum-objectives are minimized (pull effect).We present a polynomial time algorithm for this model along with some basic theoretical results, and generalize the results also to incorporate maximin and minimax objectives. In fact, the method works for any piecewise linear objective functions. Finally, we present some computational results.     

ON THE INCOMPLETENESS OF A DESCENDING CHAIN OF EXTENSIONS OF IMPLICATIONAL S5

C5.ω is obtained by adding, schematically, to the strict-implicational fragment C5 of S5 the axiom ((p → q) → (q → p)) → (q → p). This paper presents a fully general proof that neither C5.ω nor any of a descending chain of its extensions is complete with respect to any class of frames, correcting the garbled details of a version skeched in an earlier paper (same Zeitschrift 31 (1985), 201-208).
