New aspect in transient magnetic fields using heavy ion beams

Transient field precessions have been measured with the first excited 2 ₁ ⁺ -state as probe for ions of²⁸Si traversing Fe at v_ion?1v₀ and 13v₀(v₀=c/137) and⁶²Ni being stopped in Fe. The degree of polarization deduced for the Si ions, p_1s=0.19(6), is consistent with low-velocity data. There is clear evidence that the field strength is attenuated by heavy ion beams. For the⁶²Ni(2 ₁ ⁺ ) state at 1.173 MeV a g-factor value of g=0.34(7) was obtained in good agreement with a previous result.     

Phytoecdysteroids of Rhaponticum carthamoides III. Rhapisterone C

A new ecdysteroid, rhapisterone C, has been isolated from seeds of the plantRhaponticum carthamoides (Willd) Iljin (family Compositae). Observation and analysis ofE mesons in\bar p p annihilation at rest in H2 gas

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest in a gaseous H₂ target at NTP into the final state π⁺ π^? K ^± π^? (K ⁰) with an undetectedK ⁰ or \(\bar K^0 \) has been investigated. We observe theE(1420) resonance in the invariant mass spectrum (K ⁰)_miss K ^± π^? with massM _E =1413±8 MeV/c² and widthГ ^E =62 ± 16MeV/c² and find evidence for the production of thef ₁(1285). The absolute branching ratio of \(\bar p\) p → π⁺ π^? E ⁰,E ⁰ →K ₀ ^L K ^± π ^? at (61±6)%P wave annihilation is (3.0±0.9)·10^?4 of all annihilations. The observed suppression of theE production fromP wave with respect to theS wave together with some simple selection rules suggest that the quantum numbers of theE(1420) areJ ^pc=0^?+ and not I⁺⁺.     

Turbulence without strange attractor

It is shown that pipe-flow turbulence consists of transients. The fractal dimensions of the dynamical process are thus all zero. Nevertheless, this is compatible with Grassberger-Procaccia analyses suggesting the existence of a high-dimensional strange attractor. The usefulness of the Grassberger-Procaccia method to detect the aging of transients is demonstrated.     

Synchronized picosecond pulse generation with a synchronously pumped dye laser and a compressed Nd: YAG laser for non-degenerate transient grating experiments

We have set up a laser system which simultaneously provides synchronized picosecond pulses in the visible and at a wavelength of 1.06 m with a repetition rate of 76 MHz. The set-up consists of a dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of a cw mode-locked Nd:YAG laser and a fiber-grating compressor for the fundamental wavelength of the Nd;YAG laser. Crosscorrelation measurments reveal the time jitter between the two pulse trains to be less than 10 ps. As a first application we have performed non-degenerate transient grating experiments in semiconductors. The non-degenerate technique allows to use excitation energies well above the bandgap energy and to separate non-linear refractive index effects from photoinduced absorption or transmission changes.     

Synthesis and conversions of metallocycles. 7. A novel approach to the synthesis of 3,4-dialkyl-substituted aluminacyclopentanes in the presence of Cp2ZrCl2

A novel approach was developed for the stereoselective synthesis of trans-3,4-dialkyl-substituted aluminacyclopentanes from -olefins, metallic magnesium, and EtAlCl₂ in the presence of catalytic amounts of Cp₂ZrCl₂. The hydrolysis and deuterolysis products of the 3,4-dialkyl-substituted aluminacyclopentanes obtained are only in the trans configuration.For previous communication, see [1].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 7, pp. 1607–1609, July, 1991.     

Chemical instabilities during oxidation of 1,4-naphthalenediol in a homogeneous medium: II. Thermodynamic analysis and mathematical modeling

A possible mechanism of 1,4-naphthalenediol oxidation in the oscillatory regime has been considered, and a mathematical model describing the kinetics has been developed. Based on a thermodynamic Lyapunov function, it has been shown that the source of chemical instabilities is in the existence of autocatalytic steps and dynamic feedbacks. Qualitative analysis and numerical solution of the set of differential equations that model the reaction kinetics have been performed. The character of the stationary state and the possibility of bifurcations have been determined. The mathematical model satisfactorily describes the processes occurring in the system.     

Many-cluster-systems: models of inhomogeneous matter

First, some general remarks concerning macroscopic “cluster matter” are given. In the second part, three recent, mainly optically and electron-microscopically performed investigations are discussed which deal with special properties of noble metal cluster systems forming the building units of this kind of matter:(1) dressed Au-55 clusters,(2) electromagnetic coupling effects among coagulated clusters,(3) the transition towards compact inhomogeneous matter caused by coalescence of clusters.
