A finite element method for treating two-dimensional electron systems with Rashba spin–orbit interaction is developed. The Rashba spin–orbit interaction removes spin degeneracy, so that each spin contributes to the conductance differently. By accounting for the connection between a system and leads, this method yields the conductance of a nanoscale quantum device for each spin state. As an example, this calculation method is applied to a model of a quantum point contact. The results of this calculation indicate conductance quantization and a large spin polarization. Poly[acryloyl-L-valine (ALV)] microspheres containing peroxy ester groups were prepared by radical copolymerization of ALV with a small amount of di-tert-butyl peroxyfumarate. When the microspheres were irradiated in the presence of second vinyl monomers, long-lived propagating radicals of the second monomers were formed in the microspheres by the reaction of microsphere polymer radicals with the monomers. The presence of a minute quantity of ethyl alcohol served to soften the microspheres and made the polymer radicals more mobile in the microspheres. As a result, sharper ESR spectra of the propagating radicals were observed although their lifetimes became shorter. This microsphere method also yielded easily the stable propagating radicals of a-methylstyrene and 1,1-diphenylethylene which have no homopolymerizability in usual radical polymerization. When N-n-propyldimethacroylamide and N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dimethacroylhydrazine, which undergo cyclopolymerization, were used as second monomer, uncyclized polymer radicals were only observed. Cyanotolane or fluorotolane mesogens were for the first time introduced into the fumarate monomer under basic conditions. All fumarate monomers undergo radical polymerization in benzene in the presence of dimethyl 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyrate) as an initiator at 60 °C, affording the corresponding poly(fumarate)s with a molecular weight (Mn) of ~ 104 and an exceptionally narrow polydispersity. The phase behaviors of the fumarate monomers and the correspoding poly(fumarate)s were comprehensively investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. For the fumarate monomers, fluorotolane derivatives were prone to form higher‐order liquid crystal phases such as a smectic phase, while cyanotolane derivatives tended to show a wide mesophase temperature range, depending on the alkyl chain spacer length. Very surprisingly, these features dramatically weakened when they were polymerized. The mesophase temperature ranges became narrow and completely disappeared for the poly(fumarate)s with a shorter alkyl chain spacer. A nematic phase representing lower‐order arrangements became a predominant liquid crystal phase for the poly(fumarate) carrying cyanotolane mesogens. Only the poly(fumarate) carrying fluorotolane mesogens with a longer alkyl chain spacer displayed the characteristic XRD patterns of the smectic B phase. The transient photocurrent measurements of the fumarate monomer with cyanotolane mesogens displayed a hole mobility of the order of 10?4–10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1 at room temperature. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a multi-class priority queueing system with a non-preemptive time-limited service controlled by an exponential
timer and multiple (or single) vacations. By reducing the service discipline to the Bernoulli schedule, we obtain an expression
for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform (LST) of the waiting time distribution via an iteration procedure, and a recursive scheme
to calculate the first two moments. It is noted that we have to select embedded Markov points based on the service beginning
epochs instead of the service completion epochs adopted for most of M/G/1 queueing analyses. Through the queue-length analysis, we obtain a decomposition form for the LST of the waiting time in
each queue having the exhaustive service.
