Tropylium ion mediated α-cyanation of amines

Tropylium ion mediated α-cyanation of amines is described. Even in the presence of KCN, tropylium ion is capable of oxidizing various amine substrates, and the resulting iminium ions undergo salt metathesis with cyanide ion to produce aminonitriles. The byproducts of this transformation are simply cycloheptatriene, a volatile hydrocarbon, and water-soluble potassium tetrafluoroborate. Thirteen total substrates are shown for the α-cyanation procedure, including a gram scale synthesis of 17β-cyanosparteine. In addition, a tropylium ion mediated oxidative aza-Cope rearrangement is demonstrated.     

First efficient uncharged reactivators for the dephosphylation of poisoned human acetylcholinesterase

Nerve agents are highly toxic organophosphorus compounds with strong inhibition potency against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Herein, we describe two first extremely promising uncharged reactivators for poisoned human AChE with a superior or similar in vitro ability to reactivate the enzyme as compared to that of HI-6, obidoxime, TMB-4 and HL?-7.     

Synergistic effects of encapsulated phthalocyanine complexes in MIL-101 for the selective aerobic oxidation of tetralin

Metal phthalocyanine complexes encapsulated in MIL-101, and used as "ship-in-a-bottle" catalysts, show outstanding TONs in the aerobic oxidation of tetralin.     

A Lie symmetry analysis and explicit solutions of the two‐dimensional ∞‐Polylaplacian

In this work, we consider the Lie point symmetry analysis of a strongly nonlinear partial differential equation of third order, the ∞‐Polylaplacian, in two spatial dimensions. This equation is a higher order generalization of the ∞‐Laplacian, also known as Aronsson's equation, and arises as the analog of the Euler–Lagrange equations of a second‐order variational principle in L^∞. We obtain its full symmetry group, one‐dimensional Lie subalgebras and the corresponding symmetry reductions to ordinary differential equations. Finally, we use the Lie symmetries to construct new invariant ∞‐Polyharmonic functions.     

High pressure X-ray diffraction experiments on NpS and PUS up to 60 GPa

Abstract

Neptunium and plutonium monosulfides were studied under high pressure up to ～60 GPa using a diamond anvil cell in an energy dispersive X-ray diffraction facility. The compounds, of cubic rock salt structure type at ambient pressure, do not show any crystallographic phase transition in the domain of investigation. From the pressure-volume relationship, we determined bulk moduli of 92 and 120 GPa with pressure derivatives of 4.6 and 4.1 for NpS and PUS respectively.     

Frictional duality observed during nanoparticle sliding

One of the most fundamental questions in tribology concerns the area dependence of friction at the nanoscale. Here, experiments are presented where the frictional resistance of nanoparticles is measured by pushing them with the tip of an atomic force microscope. We find two coexisting frictional states: While some particles show finite friction increasing linearly with the interface areas of up to 310 000 nm(2), other particles assume a state of frictionless sliding. The results further suggest a link between the degree of surface contamination and the occurrence of this duality.     

Intramolecular,Interrupted Homo-Nazarov Cascade Biscyclizations to Angular (Hetero)Aryl-Fused Polycycles

Herein, a SnCl₄-catalyzed intramolecular, interrupted homo-Nazarov cascade biscyclization to access angular (hetero)aryl-fused polycycles is reported. Subsequent decarboxylation of the readily enolizable products afforded the angular products in up to 71 % yield over two steps, with the trans-diastereomers as the major products. The cyclopropyl homo-Nazarov cyclization precursors were formed using a scalable and modular synthetic route that, ultimately, offers access to 6,6,6-, 6,6,5-, 6,5,6-, 6,6,5,6-, and 6,6,6,5-fused angular polycyclic products. To showcase the rigor and utility of the method, an 8-step total synthesis of (±)-1-oxoferruginol, an antibacterial aromatic abietane diterpenoid, was disclosed.
