On an affirmative answer to S. Lin?s problem

In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to the problem posed by S. Lin (2002, 2007) in [7] and [8], and give another answer to the question posed by Y. Ikeda, C. Liu and Y. Tanaka (2002) in [5].     

Variational sets: Calculus and applications to nonsmooth vector optimization

We develop elements of calculus of variational sets for set-valued mappings, which were recently introduced in Khanh and Tuan (2008) [1] and [2] to replace generalized derivatives in establishing optimality conditions in nonsmooth optimization. Most of the usual calculus rules, from chain and sum rules to rules for unions, intersections, products and other operations on mappings, are established. Direct applications in stability and optimality conditions for various vector optimization problems are provided.     

Oleanolic triterpene saponins from the roots of Panax bipinnatifidus

Ten oleanane-type saponins (1-10), including three new compounds, namely bifinosides A-C (1-3), were isolated from the roots of Panax bipinnatifidus SEEM. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic methods.     

SERS spectroscopy and SERS imaging of Shewanella oneidensis using silver nanoparticles and nanowires

Facile and reproducible SERS signals from Shewanella oneidensis were obtained utilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs). Additionally, SERS images identify the distribution of SERS hot-spots. One important observation is the synergistically enhanced SERS signal when AgNPs and AgNWs are used in conjunction, due to constructively enhanced electromagnetic field.     

Leading-Order Dynamics of Gravity-Driven Flows in?Free-Standing Soap Films

We derive the leading-order equations that govern the dynamics of the flow in a falling, free-standing soap film. Starting with the incompressible Navier?CStokes equations, we carry out an asymptotic analysis using parameters that correspond to a common experimental setup. We account for the effects of inertia, surface elasticity, pressure, viscous stresses, gravity, and air drag. We find that the dynamics of the flow is dominated by the effects of inertia, surface elasticity, gravity, and air drag. We solve the leading-order equations to compute the steady-state profiles of velocity, thickness, and pressure in an experiment in which the film is in the Marangoni elasticity regime. The computational results, which include a Marangoni shock, are in good accord with the experimental measurements.     

A parallel four step domain decomposition scheme for coupled forward–backward stochastic differential equations

Motivated by the idea of imposing paralleling computing on solving stochastic differential equations (SDEs), we introduce a new domain decomposition scheme to solve forward–backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) parallel. We reconstruct the four step scheme in Ma et al. (1994) [1] and then associate it with the idea of domain decomposition methods. We also introduce a new technique to prove the convergence of domain decomposition methods for systems of quasilinear parabolic equations and use it to prove the convergence of our scheme for the FBSDEs.     

Piercing random boxes

Consider a set of n random axis parallel boxes in the unit hypercube in ${\bf R}^{d}$ , where d is fixed and n tends to infinity. We show that the minimum number of points one needs to pierce all these boxes is, with high probability, at least $\Omega_d(\sqrt{n}(\log n)^{d/2-1})$ and at most $O_d(\sqrt{n}(\log n)^{d/2-1}\log \log n)$ . © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Variable sampling interval Shewhart control charts for monitoring the multivariate coefficient of variation

In many industrial manufacturing processes, the ratio of the variance to the mean of a quantity of interest is an important characteristic to ensure the quality of the processes. This ratio is called the coefficient of variation (CV). A lot of control charts have been designed for monitoring the CV of univariate quantity in the literature. However, the CV control charts for multivariate quantity have not received much attention yet. In this paper, we investigate a variable sampling interval (VSI) Shewhart control chart for monitoring multivariate CV. The time between two consecutive samples is allowed to vary according to the previous value of the multivariate CV, which will help the chart to detect the process shifts faster. The comparison with the fixed sampling interval Shewhart chart is implemented to highlight the advantage of the VSI method. Finally, an illustrative example is demonstrated on real data.     

Existence of a renormalized solution to the quasilinear Riccati-type equation in Lorentz spaces

In this paper, we prove the existence of a renormalized solution for the quasilinear Riccati-type equation with low integrability-measure data in Lorentz spaces. The result is established in both regular and singular cases. Our proof is based on the gradient estimates for a solution to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations.
