Synthesis and characterization of beta-haloalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes: stereoselective Markovnikov addition of difluoro(aryl)-lambda3-bromane to terminal acetylenes

Reported here for the first time are the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of hypervalent beta-haloalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes. Exposure of terminal alkynes to p-trifluoromethylphenyl(difluoro)-lambda3-bromane activated by BF3-i-Pr2O resulted in fluoro-lambda3-bromanation of the triple bonds in a Markovnikov fashion, yielding (E)-beta-fluoroalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes stereoselectively in good yields. 5-Chloro-1-pentynes undergo domino lambda3-bromanation-chlorine shift-fluorination or lambda3-bromanation-chlorine shift-alkyl shift-fluorination reaction, depending on the substituents and afford (E)-beta-chloroalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes stereoselectively in high yields. The beta-chloroalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes contain three kinds of halogen atoms, F, Cl, and Br, in the molecule.     

Domino Michael addition-carbene rearrangement-cyclization reaction of 1-alkynyl(aryl)-lambda3-bromanes with 2-mercapto-1,3-benzazoles

Exposure of 1-alkynyl[p-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl](tetrafluoroborato)-lambda3-bromanes to 2-mercaptobenzimidazole or benzothiazole in dichloromethane at 0 degrees C under argon resulted in a domino Michael addition-carbene rearrangement-cyclization reaction to produce directly tricyclic heterocycles in high yields, whereas the reaction with 2-mercaptobenzoxazole afforded 1-alkynyl sulfides.     

Surfactant-promoted novel reductive synthesis of supported metallic Cu nanoclusters and their catalytic performances for selective dehydrogenation of methanol

We have found a surfactant-promoted novel reductive synthesis of metallic Cu nanoclusters on metal oxides under hydrothermal synthesis conditions, which are active for the selective dehydrogenation of methanol.     

Electrical resistivities of the uranium carbides

Electrical resistivities of arc-melted uranium carbides, UC, UC₂, U₂C₃ and UC + UC₂, were measured over the temperature range between 4 and 1900 K. The monocarbide, dicarbide and the mixture of carbides showed metallic character in their resistivity dependence on temperature above 30 K, while below this the resistivities were constant. U₂C₃ showed a knee in the resistivity curve at 54.0 K corresponding to a magnetic transition. Above 1100 K, the resistivity of U₂C₃ did not vary with temperature. The resistivity of the mixture (UC + UC₂ with U₂C₃ precipitates) showed an arrest between 800 and 950 K.     

Self-assembled octameric cage constructed by the potassium salt of p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene p-bromophenylalanine derivative in the solid state

Potassium salts of p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene p-bromophenylalanine derivative formed sizable octameric cages in the solid state that were revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis.     

Rate enhancement of Diels-Alder reactions in aqueous perfluorinated emulsions

A marked acceleration property for the Diels-Alder reaction was observed in an aqueous micellar system composed of perfluorohexane and lithium perfluorooctanesulfonate. The reaction rate increased with the concentration of the equimolar mixture of PFH and LiFOS, and the rate in 500 mM PFH and 500 mM LiFOS was about 100-fold greater than that in water without the fluorous field. After completion of the reaction, the products were simply extracted from the aqueous reaction mixture using n-hexane. [reaction: see text].     

Augmenting Outerplanar Graphs to Meet Diameter Requirements

Given an undirected graph and an integer , we consider the problem of augmenting G by a minimum set of new edges so that the diameter becomes at most D. It is known that no constant factor approximation algorithms to this problem with an arbitrary graph G can be obtained unless , while the problem with only a few graph classes such as forests is approximable within a constant factor. In this article, we give the first constant factor approximation algorithm to the problem with an outerplanar graph G. We also show that if the target diameter D is even, then the case where G is a partial 2‐tree is also approximable within a constant.
