Reactions of 2-Pyridyl Substituted Phosphine Oxides and Phosphonium Salts with Organometallic Reagents and in Aqueous Media

Phosphine oxides bearing two or three 2-pyridyl groups react with organometallic reagents affording 2,2′-bipyridyl, 2-substituted pyridines and pyridine in good yields. Phosphonium salts and phosphine oxides, bearing at least two 2-pyridyl or substituted 2-pyridyl groups also give the corresponding 2,2′-bipyridyls and pyridines upon treatment with acid or neutral solvents such as water and alcohols in substantial yields. The 2,2′-bipyridyls are considered to be formed by ligand coupling within the pentacoordinated phosphorus intermediate formed incipiently during the reaction.     

Determination of kynurenic acid levels in rat brain microdialysis samples and changes in kynurenic acid levels induced by N‐acetylaspartic acid

The levels of kynurenic acid, an endogenous antagonist of α₇ nicotinic acetylcholine and N‐methyl‐D ‐aspartate receptors, were measured in microdialysis samples obtained from the prefrontal cortices of rats using column‐switching high‐performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. When the perfusate was constantly infused at a rate of 1.0 μ/min, the in vitro recovery of kynurenic acid through the dialysis membrane was approximately 20.4%, and the precision was within 1.31%. Endogenous kynurenic acid in the microdialysis sample was clearly detected using column‐switching high‐performance liquid chromatography. As an application study, N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid, an endogenous metabolite and precursor of N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartyl‐L ‐glutamic acid, which is an agonist of metabotropic glutamate receptors, was infused for 120 min through the microdialysis probe. The kynurenic acid level significantly increased during the infusion of N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid, suggesting that kynurenic acid might have some association with N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid in vivo. Metallic conductivity and ferromagnetic interaction of iron(III) d spins in the needle crystals of (ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalenoquinone-1,3-dithiolemethide)(2).FeBr(4) salt

The 2:1 charge-transfer (CT) salts (1(2).FeBr(4) and 1(2).GaBr(4)) of ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalenoquinone-1,3-dithiolemethide (1) with FeBr(4)(-) and GaBr(4)(-) counteranions were obtained as needle crystals, whose structures are almost the same as each other. The 1 molecules form a one dimensionally stacked column with alternation of their molecular axis direction, while the counteranions are aligned in parallel with the 1-stacked columns with the direction of their distorted-tetrahedral geometry maintained. The room-temperature electrical conductivities measured on the single crystals of 1(2).FeBr(4) and 1(2).GaBr(4) were 4.6 and 2.1 S cm(-1), respectively. From the temperature dependences of their electrical conductivities in both cases the electrical conducting properties were metallic between ca. 170 and 300 K, but below ca. 170 K converted to be semiconducting and continued till 5 K, although the activation energies are very small (4-10 meV). For 1(2).FeBr(4) very weak and antiferromagnetic interaction occurred between the d spins of FeBr(4)(-) ions in the temperature range of ca. 1-300 K. However, below ca. 15 K the ferromagnetic interaction was reversely preferential possibly by participation of the pi spin of 1.     

Thermally stimulated current from extended-chain crystals of polyethylene

Thermally stimulated current (TSC) has been observed in extended-chain crystals of polyethylene above room temperature. The TSC spectra exhibit two current peaks of opposite polarity. The peaks were separated into separate components by curve fitting. The position of the negative peak, which appears at 123°C, is independent of charging conditions. The positive current increases after γ irradiation or aging of the samples.     

Photon number squeezing of ultrabroadband laser pulses generated by microstructure fibers

To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of photon number squeezing by spectral filtering for ultrabroadband light generated by microstructure fibers at 800 nm. A maximum squeezing of 4.6 dB is observed, corresponding to 10.3 dB after correcting for detection losses. We numerically analyzed the quantum dynamics of ultrashort laser pulse propagation through optical fibers by solving a nonlinear quantum Schr?dinger equation that included Raman scattering, especially for the quantum correlation of photon number fluctuation among frequency modes in broadband pulses.     

Vibration analysis on electromagnetic-resonance-ultrasound microscopy (ERUM) for determining localized elastic constants of solids

In this paper we present a new acoustic-resonance microscopy, Electromagnetic-Resonance-Ultrasound Microscopy (ERUM), to measure the localized elastic stiffness of a solid material. It visualizes the resonance-frequency shift of vibrating piezoelectric crystal (langasite, La3Ga5SiO14) excited by an electric field from a solenoid coil. The acoustic coupling is made only at the tip of the crystal touching the specimen surface. Being based on the calibration for the specimen's effective stiffness, the local elasticity is determined from the resonance frequencies of the crystal with the Rayleigh-Ritz method. An approximate model for the specimen's effective stiffness predicts the shift of resonance frequencies, for which the conventional Hertz-contact model is improved. As an illustrating example, the mapping of Young's modulus of a duplex stainless steel is presented, which shows good agreement with the existing study.     

First results from KamLAND: evidence for reactor antineutrino disappearance

KamLAND has measured the flux of nu;(e)'s from distant nuclear reactors. We find fewer nu;(e) events than expected from standard assumptions about nu;(e) propagation at the 99.95% C.L. In a 162 ton.yr exposure the ratio of the observed inverse beta-decay events to the expected number without nu;(e) disappearance is 0.611+/-0.085(stat)+/-0.041(syst) for nu;(e) energies >3.4 MeV. In the context of two-flavor neutrino oscillations with CPT invariance, all solutions to the solar neutrino problem except for the "large mixing angle" region are excluded.     

60]fullerenoacetyl chloride as a versatile precursor for fullerene derivatives: efficient ester formation with various alcohols

[reaction: see text] [60]Fullerenoacetyl chloride, one of the reactive derivatives of [60]fullerenoacetic acid, was isolated and identified for the first time. This acid chloride was easily synthesized in good yield from tert-butyl [60]fullerenoacetate through two steps. In the presence of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine as a base, the acid chloride smoothly reacted with various alcohols under mild conditions to give the corresponding esters including [60]fullerene-biomolecule hybrids in moderate to high yields.
