Homography of central points for optical distortion compensation

The paper presents a novel radial lens distortion modelling method for vision systems. It is based on single images of chessboard planar pattern, in which calibration points (corners of chessboard squares) are localised. The points, which are situated near the image centre, where the distortion is negligible, are used to determine undistorted grid of calibration points by the estimation of homographic matrix. The differences in the localisation of undistorted and distorted points are used to find parameters of radial model by the linear least square method. Having the distortion model, the dense compensation is performed with support of bilinear interpolation and a sparse compensation by Newton iterative scheme providing subpixel accuracy.     

Towards the map of quantum gravity

In this paper we point out some possible links between different approaches to quantum gravity and theories of the Planck scale physics. In particular, connections between loop quantum gravity, causal dynamical triangulations, Ho?ava–Lifshitz gravity, asymptotic safety scenario, Quantum Graphity, deformations of relativistic symmetries and nonlinear phase space models are discussed. The main focus is on quantum deformations of the Hypersurface Deformations Algebra and Poincaré algebra, nonlinear structure of phase space, the running dimension of spacetime and nontrivial phase diagram of quantum gravity. We present an attempt to arrange the observed relations in the form of a graph, highlighting different aspects of quantum gravity. The analysis is performed in the spirit of a mind map, which represents the architectural approach to the studied theory, being a natural way to describe the properties of a complex system. We hope that the constructed graphs (maps) will turn out to be helpful in uncovering the global picture of quantum gravity as a particular complex system and serve as a useful guide for the researchers.     

Carpet oscillator: A new megastable nonlinear oscillator with infinite islands of self-excited and hidden attractors

Polarisation of the particle spin can be an important problem for different plasmas. In this article, the contribution of the electron spin on the growth rate of the temperature anisotropy of electromagnetic instabilities has been investigated. Results show that polarisation of the electron spin will restrict the instability growth rate while instability can survive due to the spin-depolarised electrons even when the requested temperature anisotropy is vanished. Instability can reach the damping state exponentially due to the spin-polarised electrons while it can grow linearly due to the spin-depolarised (the semi-classical) electrons.     

Ultrasonic system for accurate distance measurement in the air

This paper presents a system that accurately measures the distance travelled by ultrasound waves through the air. The simple design of the system and its obtained accuracy provide a tool for non-contact distance measurements required in the laser’s optical system that investigates the surface of the eyeball.     

High-numerical-aperture microlens shape measurement with digital holographic microscopy

In this Letter, we introduce an algorithm that overcomes limitations in shape measurement by holographic microscopic methods in cases of micro-optical elements with high NA, such as microlenses. The presented algorithm provides a simple method for shape reconstruction from interferometrically measured phase. The algorithm is based on the analysis of local ray transition through the measured object. We develop algorithms for holographic configurations working in transmission and reflection. The accuracy of the developed algorithms is proved by experiments and extensive simulations. We present an experiment in a holographic Mach-Zehnder configuration where we have measured and successfully reconstructed the height distribution of spherical and cylindrical microlenses with NA up to 0.3.     

Cyclic voltammetry of nitrophenyl N‐glycosides on mercury electrode

Ten nitrophenyl N‐glycosides have been studied electrochemically in neutral (at pH 7) water–organic solutions by cyclic voltammetry using static mercury drop electrode. For all compounds under investigation the two electrochemical processes have been observed: the four‐electron irreversible reduction of their nitro groups to the corresponding phenylhydroxylamine derivatives, as well as the two‐electron quasi‐reversible process between phenylhydroxylamine and nitroso derivatives. For three compounds the additional electrochemical processes have been also observed, which can be connected with the formation of azoxybenzene derivatives. The potentials of both redox processes: a two‐electron quasi‐reversible R? NHOH/R? NO (E_f) and four‐electron irreversible R? NO₂/R? NHOH (E_pc(I)) systems have been determined and discussed according to crystal structures of selected compounds. E_f and E_pc(I) depended strongly on the positive mesomeric effect (caused by glycosidic nitrogen atom), as well as on the intramolecular hydrogen bond between electroactive nitro group and the hydrogen atom at the glycosidic atom observed in N‐o‐nitrophenyl‐2,3,4,6‐tetra‐O‐acetyl‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosylamine. Moreover, the chirality of selected reactants has had the pronounced effect on the E_pc(I). Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Fractional electrical model for modified bismuth oxide

Modified bismuth oxide (Bi₂O₃) is of great importance to fuel cells and oxide varistors. The electrical parameters of Bi₂O₃ vary with its modifying components as well as with its aging temperature. This paper presents an analysis of impedance test results carried out to find an equivalent electric model and the relationship between the model's elements to various additives used to modify Bi₂O₃ and to changes in aging temperature. The proposed model was tested via computer simulation and the model parameters correlated to individual modifiers.     

A Simple Synthesis of 2-Phenylethynyl- and 2-Phenylthioethynyl-2-substituted Phenylacetonitriles Under Phase-Transfer Catalytic (PTC) Conditions

The efficient synthesis of 2-phenylethynyl- or 2-phenylthioethynyl-2-substituted phenylacetonitriles 4 and 5 from nitriles 3 and substituted dichloroethenes 1 or 2, respectively, in the presence of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate (TBAHS) as a catalyst (phase-transfer catalysis, PTC), has been accomplished.
