First enantioselective synthesis of (-)- and (+)-virgatusin, tetra-substituted tetrahydrofuran lignan

The first highly enantioselective syntheses of tetra-substituted tetrahydrofuran lignan, (-)- and (+)-virgatusin, were achieved. Hemiacetal was stereoselectively obtained from Evans's syn-aldol product as a single isomer. This hemiacetal was converted to (-)-virgatusin via hydrogenolysis. (+)-Virgatusin was also synthesized through the same process. The enantiomeric excess of the both enantiomers was determined as more than 99% ee.     

Nonlinear analysis of irregular animal vocalizations

Animal vocalizations range from almost periodic vocal-fold vibration to completely atonal turbulent noise. Between these two extremes, a variety of nonlinear dynamics such as limit cycles, subharmonics, biphonation, and chaotic episodes have been recently observed. These observations imply possible functional roles of nonlinear dynamics in animal acoustic communication. Nonlinear dynamics may also provide insight into the degree to which detailed features of vocalizations are under close neural control, as opposed to more directly reflecting biomechanical properties of the vibrating vocal folds themselves. So far, nonlinear dynamical structures of animal voices have been mainly studied with spectrograms. In this study, the deterministic versus stochastic (DVS) prediction technique was used to quantify the amount of nonlinearity in three animal vocalizations: macaque screams, piglet screams, and dog barks. Results showed that in vocalizations with pronounced harmonic components (adult macaque screams, certain piglet screams, and dog barks), deterministic nonlinear prediction was clearly more powerful than stochastic linear prediction. The difference, termed low-dimensional nonlinearity measure (LNM), indicates the presence of a low-dimensional attractor. In highly irregular signals such as juvenile macaque screams, piglet screams, and some dog barks, the detectable amount of nonlinearity was comparatively small. Analyzing 120 samples of dog barks, it was further shown that the harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR) was positively correlated with LNM. It is concluded that nonlinear analysis is primarily useful in animal vocalizations with strong harmonic components (including subharmonics and biphonation) or low-dimensional chaos.     

Schizophyllans carrying oligosaccharide appendages as potential candidates for cell-targeted antisense carrier

Schizophyllans carrying beta-lactoside and alpha-mannoside appendages were prepared from native schizophyllan through NaIO4 oxidation followed by reductive amination using aminoethyl-beta-lactoside and alpha-mannoside, respectively. The resulting schizophyllans form stable macromolecular complexes with polynucleotides, such as poly(C) and poly(dA). Specific affinity between these macromolecular complexes and saccharide-binding proteins was demonstrated by surface plasmon resonance and agarose gel staining assays. beta-lactoside-appended schizophyllan enhanced an antisense activity in hepatocytes which express lactoside-binding proteins on their cell surfaces.     

Tip-enhanced coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering for vibrational nanoimaging

An electric field enhanced by a metallic nanoprobe has locally induced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) of adenine molecules in a nanometric DNA network structure. Owing to the third-order nonlinearity, the excitation of the CARS polarization is extremely confined to the end of the tip apex, resulting in a spatial resolution far beyond the diffraction limit of light. Our tip-enhanced CARS microscope visualized the DNA network structure at a specific vibrational frequency (approximately 1337 cm(-1)) corresponding to the ring-breathing mode of diazole of adenine molecules.     

Observation of two-photon above-threshold ionization of rare gases by xuv harmonic photons

We have successfully observed two-photon above-threshold ionization in rare gas atoms (Ar, Xe, and He) by the fifth harmonic (25 eV photon energy) of a KrF laser. Use of the energy-resolved photoelectron counting system together with our laser, providing strong 25 eV radiation at 40-100 Hz, enabled us to detect the very weak single-color two-photon above-threshold ionization signals. Experimental data are in good agreement with our theoretical calculations newly developed along the line of multichannel quantum defect theory.     

Generation of terawatt 10-fs blue pulses by compensation for pulse-front distortion in broadband frequency doubling

Pulse-front distortion as a result of broadband frequency doubling (BFD) has been compensated for over a 3-cm beam diameter by use of a telescope image relay system. As a result, distortion-free blue pulses with a peak power of 1.4 TW and a pulse width of 10 fs have been generated with a 10-Hz Ti:sapphire laser by use of this modified BFD configuration.     

3-epicabraleahydroxylactone and other triterpenoids from camellia oil and their inhibitory effects on Epstein-Barr virus activation

The structure of a triterpenoid isolated from the nonsaponifiable lipid (NSL) of the seed oil of the camellia (Camellia japonica L.; Theaceae) was established to be (20S)-3beta-hydroxy-25,26,27-trisnordammaran-24,20-olide (1; 3-epicabraleahydroxylactone) on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods. Six other triterpenoids isolated from the NSL were identified as 3-epicabraleadiol (2), ocotillol II (3), ocotillol I (4), dammarenediol II (5), (20R)-taraxastane-3beta,20-diol (6), and lupane-3beta,20-diol (7). Upon evaluation of the seven triterpenoids (1-7) with respect to their inhibitory effects on the induction of Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) in Raji cells, three compounds (5-7) showed potent inhibitory effects against EBV-EA induction (IC(50) values of 277-420 mol ratio/32 pmol TPA).     

Generation of subterawatt sub-10-fs blue pulses at 1-5 kHz by broadband frequency doubling

Blue pulses with durations of 8.5 fs are generated by broadband frequency doubling of subterawatt Ti:sapphire laser systems at 1-5-kHz repetition rates. The average powers are 1.6 W at 5 kHz and 1.9 W at 1 kHz. The peak power is 0.16 TW with a duration of 12 fs at 1 kHz.     

Generation of vacuum-ultraviolet light by an optically contacted,prism-coupled KBe2BO3F2 crystal

We have demonstrated the second harmonic of a frequency-tripled Nd:YVO4 laser with 2.5-mW quasi-cw output by using an optically contacted, prism-coupled KBe2BO3F2 crystal. We also achieved the second harmonic with a frequency-doubled single-mode Ti:sapphire laser at 172.5 nm and sum-frequency mixing with a dual-wavelength Ti:sapphire laser at 163.3 nm. These wavelengths are to our knowledge the shortest obtained by use of nonlinear crystals for second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency mixing, respectively.
