Nonlinear magneto-optical diffraction by two-dimensional magnetic superstructures

Nonlinear (at the second-harmonic frequency of the incident light) optical reflection by two-dimensional magnetic superstructures is theoretically studied. A square lattice of magnetic dots and a hexagonal lattice of magnetic bubbles (cylindrical magnetic domains) are considered. Because the periods of these structures are comparable with the wavelengths of the fundamental and the second-harmonic radiation, it would be possible to observe diffraction at the second-harmonic frequency. A polarization analysis of nonlinearly diffracted radiation is performed and the numbers of observable diffraction orders for the above structures are estimated. Liquid chromatographic analysis of mexiletine in serum, with alternate application to tocainide, procainamide, and N-acetylprocainamide.

A simple and precise high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of mexiletine in human serum or plasma is described. Following addition of N-propionylprocainamide as internal standard the specimens are extracted, under basic conditions, into methylene chloride. After removal of the aqueous layer the drug is back-extracted into dilute acid, which is then injected directly for analysis. The extraction efficiency is 79% for both mexiletine and internal standard, and the assay is linear to 4 mg/L (twice upper therapeutic concentration). Inter-run coefficients of variation are 3.0% or less. The relative retention time of mexiletine to internal standard averages 1.3. An adaptation of this method is described for an alternate application to the analysis of tocainide, procainamide and N-acetylprocainamide.     

Oscillatory kinetics and mechanism of the chromate catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide

Oscillatory change of pH occurs during the chromate-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in a weakly acidic medium at elevated temperature and at high initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In a closed system, there are only two or three periods, but sustained oscillation occurs in a CSTR. In a CSTR bistability is also found. In closed systems the temperature exhibits a great maximum (up to 15°C increase), in a CSTR sustained oscillation occurs at a constant stationary temperature.

Fibre stability in anisotropic matrix at small strains

As acknowledged in almost all monographs on the fracture of composite materials, one of the major fracture mechanism in unidirectional fibrous composites under uniaxial compression along the reinforcing elements is the stability loss of the material structure (the structural instability). According to this mechanism, theoretical investigations of the fracture along the fibres are reduced to those of the stability loss in the material structure, and the value of external critical forces is accepted as the value of failure forces. At present, numerous theoretical investigations have been carried out in this field with the use of the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability in the framework of the piecewise-homogeneous body model. However, in all the investigations it is assumed that the matrix and the fibre material are isotropic. It is evident that in many cases it is necessary to take into account the anisotropy of the matrix material when investigating the stability loss of fibres. In view of the above, in the framework of the piecewise-homogeneous body model using the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability, the present paper considers the stability loss of the fibre in the anisotropic (transversally isotropic) matrix. Strong interactions at low energies

The lectures review some of the basic concepts relevant for an understanding of the low energy properties of the strong interactions: chiral symmetry, spontaneous symmetry breakdown, Goldstone bosons, quark condensate. The effective field theory used to analyze the low energy structure is briefly sketched. As an illustration, I discuss the implications of the recent data on the decay K→ππeν for the magnitude of the quark condensate.     

Computer-generated holograms from 3D-objects written on twisted-nematic liquid crystal displays

In order to optimize computer-generated holograms (CGHs) for three-dimensional objects, an extension of the well known Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm is used. Optical reconstructions using an electrically addressed twisted-nematic liquid crystal display are presented. For arbitrary CGHs, reconstructing 3D-objects, we will discuss the problems and solutions associated with periodic replication of holograms.
