Melting and vaporization of salts in a U-LiCl-Li2O system

Summary The electrochemical reduction of uranium oxide in the treatment of spent nuclear fuel requires a characterization of the LiCl-Li₂O salt used as a reaction medium. Physical properties, melting and vaporization are important for the application of the salt and thus they have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG), respectively. Experimental data suggest LiCl and Li₂O compound formations, leading to a melting point depression of the LiCl and a co-vaporization of the LiCl-Li₂O salt.

The dipeptide sweetener, aspartame, has been prepared in high yield via the coupling of L-phenylalanine methyl ester and L-aspartic acid N-thiocarboxyanhydride.     

A new synthesis of 1,2,3,5‐tetrahydroimidazo[2,3‐b]‐[1,3]benzodiazocines

A new synthesis of 6‐carbomethoxy‐1,2,3,5‐tetrahydroirnidazo[2,3‐b][1,3]benzodiazocines 13 by the intramolecular cycloaddition reaction of methyl 2‐(1‐aziridinylmethyl)‐3‐(2‐ureidophenyl)propenoates 10 under Appel's dehydration conditions is described. The latter were readily obtained from 2‐nitrobenzalde‐hyde with methyl acrylate through the Baylis‐Hillman reaction.     

Total syntheses of epothilones B and d

A convergent, total synthesis of epothilones B (2) and D (4) is described. The key steps are Normant coupling to establish the desired (Z)-stereochemistry at C12-C13, Wadsworth-Emmons olefination of methyl ketone 28 with the phosphonate ester 8, diastereoselective aldol condensation of aldehyde 5 with the enolate of keto acid derivatives to form the C6-C7 bond, selective deprotection of acid 52, and macrolactonization.
