Positively-charged monolayer protected gold clusters (MMPCs) were mixed with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). At lower SDS concentration, the initially water-soluble particles became organic-soluble while remaining discrete. Upon further addition of SDS, the particles aggregate and become water-soluble. NaCN decomposition, TEM, and DLS characterization reveal the morphology and properties of these encapsulated assemblies.  相似文献

Clear evidence is reported for the first time of a rapid localized reduction of core electron energy diffusivity during the formation of an electron internal-transport barrier. The transition occurs rapidly (approximately = 3 ms), during a slow (approximately = 200 ms) self-inductive evolution of the magnetic shear. This crucial observation, and the correlation of the transition with the time and location of the magnetic shear reversal, lend support to models attributing the reduced transport to the local properties of a zero-shear region, in contrast to models predicting a gradual reduction due to a weak or negative shear.  相似文献

Single-chain and TRIS-assembled collagen mimetic peptide structures incorporating catechol groups were synthesized. When 1/3 equiv of Fe3+ was added to the single-chain compound in 50 mM CAPS buffer (pH 10), the 1:3 Fe3+-catechol complex that formed acted as an N-terminal scaffold to assemble the triple helix. When 1 equiv of Fe3+ was added to the TRIS-assembled compound in the buffer solution, the Fe3+-catechol complex acted as an extra C-terminal scaffold, which lead to a triple helix with both termini tethered. The formation of this C-terminal complex increased the Tm by a remarkable 22 degrees C!  相似文献

Formant dynamics in vowel nuclei contribute to vowel classification in English. This study examined listeners' ability to discriminate dynamic second formant transitions in synthetic high front vowels. Acoustic measurements were made from the nuclei (steady state and 20% and 80% of vowel duration) for the vowels /i, I, e, epsilon, ae/ spoken by a female in /bVd/ context. Three synthesis parameters were selected to yield twelve discrimination conditions: initial frequency value for F2 (2525, 2272, or 2068 Hz), slope direction (rising or falling), and duration (110 or 165 ms). F1 frequency was roved. In the standard stimuli, F0 and F1-F4 were steady state. In the comparison stimuli only F2 frequency varied linearly to reach a final frequency. Five listeners were tested under adaptive tracking to estimate the threshold for frequency extent, the minimal detectable difference in frequency between the initial and final F2 values, called deltaF extent. Analysis showed that initial F2 frequency and direction of movement for some F2 frequencies contributed to significant differences in deltaF extent. Results suggested that listeners attended to differences in the stimulus property of frequency extent (hertz), not formant slope (hertz/second). Formant extent thresholds were at least four times smaller than extents measured in the natural speech tokens, and 18 times smaller than for the diphthongized vowel /e/.  相似文献

Considerations of application of a continuum model of a solid with a free surface to particle-surface interaction theory are presented. The work is based on the recent normal-mode analysis of such a model by the author. It is shown that the model has some important unrealistic properties which do not occur in discrete-lattice models, and it is concluded that considerable care is needed in interpreting some of the predictions of the model, particularly with regard to the importance of normal modes of the non-bulk type, for example surface modes.  相似文献

Far-field weak scattering theory is applied to the case of high-frequency broad-bandwidth acoustic scattering from a thermally generated buoyant plume in a controlled laboratory environment. To first order, the dominant scattering mechanism is thermally driven sound-speed variations that are related to temperature deviations from ambient. As a result, the received complex acoustic scattering is a measure of the one-component three-dimensional Fourier transform of the temperature difference field measured at the Bragg wave number. The Bragg wave number vector is the difference between the scattered and incident wave vectors. Solving for its magnitude yields the Bragg scattering condition; this is the Fourier component of the plume variability that produces scattering. Results are presented for multistatic scattering from unstable and turbulent plumes using a parallel scattering geometry. The data justify application of the far-field weak scattering theory to the present case of a thermal plume. As a consequence, quantitative results on medium variability can be inferred using high-frequency broad-bandwidth acoustic scattering. Particular attention is given to the role of anisotropy of the variability of the scattering field in determining the validity of far-field Bragg scattering.  相似文献

Decisions relating to hospital nurse staffing and scheduling are among the most important decisions made in hospitals today. Staffing and scheduling choices must be made which will result in timely and high-quality care to patients. These choices are complicated by the requirement for round-the-clock staffing in many hospital nursing units, a severe nursing shortage, and an outcry from many quarters to cut costs of health care. In general, patients today are kept in hospitals only if they are in need of highly skilled nursing care. In this paper we present a review of some of the issues in health care currently influencing the hospital nurse staffing and scheduling environment. In addition, we review the literature that illustrates nurse manager's concerns, and approaches taken in the past by operations researchers to address those concerns. We present some data from a recent study of nurse managers in 31 hospitals that illustrates the complexity of the issues. We conclude with a discussion of future research directions in hospital nurse staffing and scheduling.  相似文献
