A domino copper-catalyzed C-O coupling-Claisen rearrangement process

A practical method for the diastereoselective generation of two adjacent quarternary stereocenters by combining a copper-catalyzed C-O coupling reaction with a subsequent Claisen rearrangement in a one-pot domino process is described. Furthermore, an experimentally simple method for the stereoselective synthesis of a variety of different types of vinyl ethers is delineated using the same catalyst system.     

Versatile solid-phase synthesis of secondary amines from alcohols. Development of an N-Boc-(o-nitrobenzene)sulfonamide linker

The development of a versatile amine releasing linker based on the modified o-nitrobenzene sulfonamide protective group is described. This new N-Boc-o-nitrobenzenesulfonamide (Boc-ONBS) linker enables the elaboration on resin of primary and secondary amines by sequential substitution of the sulfonamide moiety using the Mitsunobu reaction. A 16-member array of secondary and Boc protected primary amines was then prepared using this linker.

Asymmetric synthesis of (-)-7-epiaustraline and (+)-1,7-diepiaustraline

A diastereoselective and modular approach to the synthesis of the 3-hydroxymethyl-2,3,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-pyrrolizine-1,2,7-triol structure, characteristic of several natural pyrrolizidine natural products, has been developed. This approach culminated in the synthesis of (-)-7-epiaustraline and (+)-1,7-diepiaustraline. The oxazolidinone group has been found to be a useful protecting group in the RCM reaction and, as part of a pyrrolo[1,2-c]oxazol-3-one ring system, has functioned as a stereo- and regio-directing group in a key diastereoselective cis-dihydroxylation reaction and a regioselective nucleophilic ring-opening of a S,S-dioxo-dioxathiole.     

A resonance Raman,surface-enhanced resonance Raman,IR, and ab initio vibrational spectroscopic study of nickel(II) tetraazaannulene complexes

The IR and resonance Raman spectra of the nickel(II) complexes of dibenzo[b,i][1,4,8,11]tetraaza[14]annulene (TAA) and 5,7,12,14-tetramethyldibenzo[b,i][1,4,8,11]tetraaza[14]annulene (TMTAA) have been measured and compared with ab initio calculations of the vibrational wavenumbers at the B3-LYP level using the LanL2DZ basis set. An excellent fit is found between the experimental and calculated data, enabling precise vibrational assignments to be made. Surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectra were obtained following adsorption on Ag electrodes, with potentials in the range -0.1 to -1.1 V vs Ag/AgCl. There is evidence for contributions from both the electromagnetic and charge transfer (CT) surface enhancement mechanisms. The data indicate that variations in band intensities with electrode potential can be interpreted in terms of the CT mechanism.     

Matrix-isolation-FTIR spectroscopy with an integrating sphere

The use of an integrating sphere for the measurement of absorption spectra of thin films is described. The thin film (for example a rare gas matrix) is grown directly on the inside surface of the sphere. Multiple reflections inside the integrating sphere lead to significant enhancement of weak absorptions of the film, increasing the sensitivity of such measurements.     

Equivalence of vacuum Yang-Mills gravitation and vacuum Einstein gravitation

In the Yang-Mills formulation of gravitational dynamics based uponSL(2,C) spin transformations acting on Dirac spinors, the vacuum field equations are R +C R = 0 and and . HereR is the Ricci curvature andC is the Weyl conformal curvature; is a coupling constant. We show the equivalence between solutions of these equations and the vacuum Einstein equationsR = 0. Aminocyclodextrins to facilitate the deprotonation of 4-tert-butyl-alpha-nitrotoluene

6A-Amino-6A-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin enhances the rate of the deprotonation of 4-tert-butyl-alpha-nitrotoluene. The rate constants for reaction of the cyclodextrin-bound species, kinc = 4 x 10(-3), 9 x 10(-3) and 19 x 10(-3) s(-1), at pH 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0, respectively, in 0.1 mol dm(-3) aqueous phosphate buffer containing 1% methanol at 298 K. These rate constants correspond to a rate acceleration (kinc/kun) of ca. 10 times at each pH. Under the same conditions, 6A-dimethylamino-6A-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin and 6A-(2-aminoethylamino)-6A-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin are more effective; at pH 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0, for the former, kinc = 3 x 10(-2), 7 x 10(-2) and 12 x 10(-2) s(-1), whilst for the latter, kinc = 4 x 10(-2), 5 x 10(-2) and 9 x 10(-2) s(-1), respectively. Each cyclodextrin also decreases the pKa of the nitrotoluene, from 6.8 in free solution, to 6.2 when bound. The accelerated deprotonation by 6A-amino-6A-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin is reflected in the enhanced rates of hydrogen-deuterium exchange of the nitrotoluene in deuterium oxide, and in the conjugate addition of the nitrotoluene to methyl vinyl ketone in aqueous solution.
