Elastic properties of CaMnO3 are of primary importance in the science and technology of CaMnO3-based perovskites. From X-ray diffraction experiments performed at pressures up to 100 kbar using a diamond-anvil cell to hydrostatically compress our sample, a bulk modulus, K 0, of 1734(96) kbar was obtained after fitting parameters to the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. Mean field, semiclassical simulations predict, for the first time, the third-order equation-of-state parameters and show how the bulk modulus increases with pressure (the zero pressure value being 2062.1 kbar) and decreases with the extent of nonstoichiometry caused by the formation of oxygen vacancies. These trends are amplified for the shear modulus. A more accurate model that allows for the explicit reduction of Mn ions, or localization of excess electrons, yields qualitatively similar results. The experimental and calculated axial ratios show the same trends in their variation with rising pressure. 相似文献

This paper describes band structure computations of photonic crystals with a hexagonal lattice. Particularly, the full vectorial three-dimensional case is considered. The unit cells are approximated with a staircase approximation. Due to their periodicity, fields inside the computational window can be related to those outside of this area. We consider the semiclassical limit of quantum systems with a Hamiltonian given by the Weyl quantization of an operator valued symbol. Systems composed of slow and fast degrees of freedom are of this form. Typically a small dimensionless parameter ${\varepsilon \ll 1}$ controls the separation of time scales and the limit ${\varepsilon\to 0}$ corresponds to an adiabatic limit, in which the slow and fast degrees of freedom decouple. At the same time ${\varepsilon\to 0}$ is the semiclassical limit for the slow degrees of freedom. In this paper we show that the ${\varepsilon}$ -dependent classical flow for the slow degrees of freedom first discovered by Littlejohn and Flynn (Phys Rev A (3) 44(8):5239–5256, 1991), coming from an ${\varepsilon}$ -dependent classical Hamilton function and an ${\varepsilon}$ -dependent symplectic form, has a concrete mathematical and physical meaning: Based on this flow we prove a formula for equilibrium expectations, an Egorov theorem and transport of Wigner functions, thereby approximating properties of the quantum system up to errors of order ${\varepsilon^2}$ . In the context of Bloch electrons formal use of this classical system has triggered considerable progress in solid state physics (Xiao et al. in Rev Mod Phys 82(3):1959–2007, 2010). Hence we discuss in some detail the application of the general results to the Hofstadter model, which describes a two-dimensional gas of non-interacting electrons in a constant magnetic field in the tight-binding approximation. 相似文献

In Taylor-Couette flow the total energy dissipation rate and therefore the drag can be determined by measuring the torque on the system. We do so for Reynolds numbers between Re=7 x 10(4) and Re=10(6) after having injected (i) small bubbles (R=1 mm) up to a volume concentration of alpha=5% and (ii) buoyant particles (rhop/rhol=0.14) of comparable volume concentration. In case (i) we observe a crossover from little drag reduction at smaller Re to strong drag reduction up to 20% at Re=10(6). In case (ii) we observe at most little drag reduction throughout. Several theoretical models for bubbly drag reduction are discussed in view of our findings. 相似文献

Results of stable isotope measurements (δ2H, δ18O) of daily grab samples, taken from the Danube River at Tulln (river km 1963) during 2012, show seasonal and short-term variations depending on the climatic/hydrological conditions and changes in the catchment area (temperature changes, heavy rains and snow melt processes). Isotope ratios in river water clearly reflect the isotopic composition of precipitation water in the catchment area since evaporation influences play a minor role. Average δ2H and δ18O values in 2012 are?78‰ and?11.0‰, respectively, deuterium excess averages 10‰. The entire variation amounts to 1.8‰ in δ18O and 15‰ in δ2H. Quick changes of the isotopic composition within a few days emphasise the necessity of daily sampling for the investigation of hydrological events, while monthly grab sampling seems sufficient for the investigation of long-term hydro-climatic trends. 3H results show peaks (half-width 1–2 days, up to about 150 TU) exceeding the regional environmental level of about 9 TU, probably due to releases from nuclear power plants. 相似文献

This article reports an efficient method to simulate time and frequency resolved coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering spectra measured with picosecond pump and probe fields and ultrashort Stokes pulses. A systematic comparison of measured and simulated time and frequency dependent data is presented for carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, cyclohexane, octane, and poly(methyl methacrylate). While the first compound exhibits no Raman active modes in the considered spectral region of the CH‐stretch vibrations, the other ones show Raman spectra of increasing complexity. Vibrational frequencies and homogeneous dephasing rates are extracted by fitting explicit analytical formulas to the recorded data. Interference between nonresonant and resonant contributions to the nonlinear polarization is taken fully into account. The ability to measure the influence of inhomogeneous broadening is discussed. We demonstrate that many collective phenomena in multi-cellular systems can be explained by models in which cells, despite their complexity, are represented as simple particles which are parameterized mainly by their physical properties. We mainly focus on two examples that nevertheless span a wide range of biological sub-disciplines: Unstructured cell populations growing in cell culture and growing cell layers in early animal development. While cultured unstructured cell populations would apriori been classified as particularly suited for a biophysical approach since the degree to which they are committed to a genetic program is expected to be modest, early animal development would be expected to mark the other extreme—here the degree of determinism according to a genetic program would be expected to be very high. We consider a number of phenomena such as the growth kinetics and spatial structure formation of monolayers and multicellular spheroids, the effect of the presence of another cell type surrounding the growing cell population, the effect of mutations and the critical surface dynamics of monolayers. Different from unstructured cell populations, cells in early development and at tissue interfaces usually form highly organized structures. An example are tissue layers. Under certain circumstances such layers are observed to fold. We show that folding pattern again can largely be explained by physical mechanisms either by a buckling instability or active cell shape changes. Traditionally evolution is seen as a process where from a pool of possible variations of a population (e.g. biological species or industrial goods) a few variations get selected which survive and proliferate, whereas the others vanish. Survival probabilities and proliferation rates are typically associated with the ‘fitness’ of particular variations. In this paper we argue that the notion of fitness is an a posteriori concept, in the sense that one can assign higher fitness to species that survive but one can generally not derive or predict fitness per se. Proliferation rates can be measured, whereas fitness landscapes, i.e. the inter-dependence of proliferation rates, cannot. For this reason we think that in a physical theory of evolution such notions should be avoided. In this spirit, here we propose a random matrix model of evolution where selection mechanisms are encoded in interaction matrices of species, thereby extending the previous work of ours by a control parameter describing suppressors in the system. We are able to recover some key facts of evolution dynamics endogenously, such as punctuated equilibrium, i.e. the existence of intrinsic large extinction events, and, at the same time, periods of dramatic diversification, as known e.g. from the fossil record. Further, we comment on two fundamental technical problems of a ‘physics of evolution’, the non-closedness of its phase space and the problem of co-evolving boundary conditions, apparent in all systems subject to evolution. 相似文献

A 5M Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal was investigated, supplied by Adaptamat Ltd, Finland. Especially low temperature magnetic actuation as well as cyclic tensile-compression tests revealed promising properties, which provide useful insights for training concepts in polycrystalline materials. Elastography is a technique to assess the viscoelastic properties of tissue by measuring an acoustic wave propagating though the object. Here, the technique is applied in the course of standard MR mammography to 15 patients with different pathologies (six breast cancer cases, six fibroadenoma cases and three mastopathy cases). Low-frequency mechanical waves are coupled longitudinally into the tissue in order to obtain sufficient wave amplitude throughout the entire breast. This leads to the presence of a substantial fraction of compressional waves, which contribute to the total displacement field. It is shown theoretically that the correct evaluation of these contributions from the compressional wave is rather difficult due to the almost incompressible nature of tissue. To overcome this problem, it is proposed to apply the curl-operator to the measured displacement field in order to completely remove contributions from the compressional wave. Results from simulations and a breast phantom demonstrate the feasibility of the technique. The in vivo results show a good separation between breast cancer and benign fibroadenoma utilizing the shear modulus. Breast cancer appears on average 2.2 (P<.001) times stiffer. All breast cancer cases showed a good delineation to the surrounding breast tissue with an average elevation of a factor of 3.3 (P< 1.4 x 10(-6)). The results as obtained for the shear viscosity do not indicate to be useful for separating benign from malignant lesions. 相似文献
