Performance improvement of a high-temperature superconducting coil by separating and grading the coil edge

In this paper, we establish a model to analyze the transport current performance of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coil, considering the dependencies of critical current and n-value of an HTS tape on magnetic field and magnetic field angles. This analysis shows that relatively large electric fields appear at the coil’s edges, preventing improvement in the transport current performance of the coil. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a graded coil in which several coil edges of different heights are separated and graded. Analysis of its performance shows that the coil’s critical current increases, thus confirming that there exists an optimum coil cross section at which the stored energy and central magnetic field improve 2.1 times and 45%, respectively, compared with a typical rectangular coil that employs the same total length of the HTS tape. It is recommended that these results of the coil should be applied to SMES.     

New mu-opioid receptor agonists with phenoxyacetic acid moiety

New muq-opioid receptor (MOR) agonists containing 4-hydroxypiperidine, piperidine and piperazine moieties were synthesized and evaluated to find a peripheral opioid analgesic. Among the synthesized compounds, 12-[1-[3-(N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl)-3,3-diphenylpropyl]-4-hydroxypiperidin-4-yl]phenoxy]acetic acid (8: SS620) having phenoxyacetic acid and 4-hydroxypiperidine moieties showed the highest agonist potency on the MOR in an isolated guinea-pig ileum preparation, and it also had selectivity to the human MOR expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells compared with the same types of delta- and kappa-opioid receptors (DOR and KOR). In addition, compound 8 showed a 10 times more potent MOR agonist activity than loperamide. Furthermore, compound 8 showed a peripheral analgesic activity in vivo screening on rat.     

Synthesis of water-soluble C60-porphyrin hybrid compounds

Water-soluble C60-porphyrin hybrid molecules were first synthesized toward their pharmaceutical applications.     

Multiwavelength distributed-feedback dye laser array and its application to spectroscopy

A multiwavelength, multistripe tunable laser array is proposed, and its application to absorption spectroscopy is demonstrated. Laser waveguides doped with Rhodamine 6 G dye were integrated on a plastic chip, and simultaneous output at different wavelengths was obtained by use of a distributed-feedback technique. A very low threshold of 3 muJ was attained, and spectrally narrowed output (<0.1 nm) was obtained. A scheme for digital spectroscopy is also proposed based on this laser array, and absorption spectroscopy of sodium atoms without wavelength scanning is demonstrated by use of a sodium-vapor cell.     

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline phase transition of (S)-hexakis(4-(4'-(6-methyl)octyloxy)biphenoxy) cyclotriphosphazene

(S)-Hexakis(4-(4'-(6-methyl)octyloxy)biphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (SMOCP) was synthesized in a search for new ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds. We found an enantiotropic ferroelectric smectic C* phase between 419 and 441 K in SMOCP by using polarizing microscopy and DSC measurements. The spontaneous polarization was estimated to be -130.5 μCm^-2 at 437.6 K, several times larger than that of DOBAMBC ((S)-2-methylbutyl 4-(4'-decyloxybenzylidene)aminocinnamate.

Hydrangenoside A, isolated along with its three congeners from Hydrangea macrophylla, was proved to have a novel type of structure which is thought to be biosynthesized through an aldol-type condensation of secologanin with a unit formed by the shikimate-malonate route followed by decarboxylation.     

Finite difference simulation of nonlinear waves generated by ships of arbitrary three-dimensional configuration

A modified marker-and-cell method is developed in order to simulate nonlinear wave making in the near-field of ships of arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) configuration advancing steadily in deep water. The 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference scheme under proper boundary conditions. Efforts are particularly focused on the treatment of the boundary conditions on the body surface and free surface which have complicated 3D configurations. An orthogonal cell system with more than 70,000 cells is used for the computation of the waves and flow field of ships. The agreement of computational results with experiment is good, and it promises effectiveness for engineering purposes.     

Nickel-catalyzed arylcyanation of alkynes

A nickel catalyst coordinated by trimethylphosphine is found to effect the addition reaction of Ar-CN bonds in aromatic nitriles across alkynes to give rise to various beta-arylalkenenitriles.
