Powers of the Vertex Cover Ideal of a Chordal Graph

In this article, Cohen–Macaulay chordal graphs and generalized star graphs are studied to show that all powers of the vertex cover ideal of such graphs have linear quotients. Moreover, it is shown that the Alexander dual of the clique complex of any chordal graph is vertex decomposable.     

Involutions on certain Banach algebras related to locally compact groups

Let \(\mathcal{{A}}\) be a Banach algebra and let \(\mathcal{{X}}\) be an introverted closed subspace of \(\mathcal{{A}}^*\) . Here, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for that the dual algebra \(\mathcal{{X}}^*\) of \(\mathcal{{X}}\) or the topological centers \({\mathfrak {Z}}_t^{(1)}(\mathcal{{X}}^{*})\) and \({\mathfrak {Z}}_t^{(2)}(\mathcal{{X}}^{*})\) of \(\mathcal{{X}}^*\) are Banach \(*\) -algebras. We finally apply these results to the Banach space \(L_0^\infty (G)\) of all equivalence classes of essentially bounded functions vanishing at infinity on a locally compact group \(G\) .

N‐phosphinyl ureas: Synthesis,characterization, X‐ray structure,and in vitro evaluation of antitumor activity

A new series of N‐phosphinylureas 5b, 6a–7c was synthesized and characterized by ¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The three‐dimensional structure of 5b has been determined by X‐ray crystallography. The crystal structure revealed the existence of four independent molecules. All structures form two chains with different arrangements and connect to each other via hydrogen bonds to produce two‐dimensional polymeric chains. The cytotoxicity of cyclophosphamide (a standard antitumor compound) and its nine analogues with formula R¹C₆H₄ NHC(O)NHP(O)XCH₂C(R²)₂ CH₂Y(X = Y = NH, R² = CH₃, R¹ = H ( 5a ), CH₃ ( 5b ), NO₂ ( 5c ), X = O, Y = NH, R² = H, R¹ = H ( 6a , CH₃ ( 6b ), NO₂ ( 6c ), and X = Y = O, R² = CH₃, R¹ = H ( 7a ), CH₃ ( 7b ), NO₂ ( 7c )) as well as phenyl urea were evaluated in vitro against three human tumor cell lines K562, MDA‐MB‐231, and HepG2. The results showed that most of the compounds have significant activity against the selected cell lines. Also, HepG2 cells were more sensitive to all the tested compounds than other cell lines. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface Interaction of Ionic Liquids: Stabilization of Polyethylene Terephthalate-Degrading Enzymes in Solution

The effect of aqueous solutions of selected ionic liquids solutions on Ideonella sakaiensis PETase with bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) substrate were studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations in order to identify the possible effect of ionic liquids on the structure and dynamics of enzymatic Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolysis. The use of specific ionic liquids can potentially enhance the enzymatic hydrolyses of PET where these ionic liquids are known to partially dissolve PET. The aqueous solution of cholinium phosphate were found to have the smallest effect of the structure of PETase, and its interaction with (BHET) as substrate was comparable to that with the pure water. Thus, the cholinium phosphate was identified as possible candidate as ionic liquid co-solvent to study the enzymatic hydrolyses of PET.     

Highly selective thiocyanate poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrode based on a cadmium–Schiff’s base complex

A PVC membrane electrode based on a cadmium–salen (N,N′-bis-salicylidene-1,2ethylenediamine) complex as an anion carrier is described. The electrode has an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence with a preference for thiocyanate at pH 1.5–11.0. It has a linear response to thiocyanate from 1.0 × 10^–6 to 1.0 × 10^–1 mol L^–1 with a slope of 59.1 ± 0.2 mV per decade, and a detection limit of 7 × 10^–7 mol L^–1. This electrode has high selectivity for thiocyanate relative to many common organic and inorganic anions. The proposed sensor has a fast response time of approximately 15 s. It was applied to the determination of thiocyanate in a milk sample. Received: 1 December 2000 / Revised: 19 April 2001 / Accepted: 30 April 2001     

Uranium recovery from UCF liquid waste by nanoporous MCM-41: breakthrough capacity and elution behavior studies

Adsorption and recovery of uranium by nanoporous MCM-41 from aqueous solutions (synthetic solution and uranium conversion facility liquid waste) were investigated by use of a fixed-bed column (1.2 cm diameter and 3.0 cm height). Adsorption was carried out at flow rates 0.2 and 0.5 mL min^?1, which correspond to retention times of 10 and 6 min. The maximum breakthrough capacity for uranium ions was achieved by use of nanoporous MCM-41 at the optimum pH of 3.6 and flow rate 0.2 mL min^?1 (61.95 μg g^?1). The Thomas and Yan models were applied to the experimental data, by use of linear regression, to determine the characteristics of the column for process design. The breakthrough curves calculated from the models were in good agreement with the experimental data. The elution behavior of uranium on nanoporous MCM-41 was studied with different eluents; the results showed that 0.1 M HCl is good eluent for uranium recovery. The regenerated column could be used in a multitude of adsorption–desorption cycles.     

One-pot Synthesis of 1,8-Dioxo-decahydroacridine Derivatives in Aqueous Media

A new and efficient method for the synthesis of 1,8‐dioxo‐9‐aryl‐decahydroacridine derivatives was developed via a one‐pot three component reaction of dimedone, aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate in the presence of ammonium chloride, or Zn(OAc)₂·2H₂O or L‐proline separately in water in the short period of time and high yields.
