The significance of a second adsorption phase with weakly adsorbed species for the calculation of the surface concentrations of a mixture: methanol–DME and methanol–ethene adsorption in SAPO-34

With the calorimetric (adsorption heat versus coverage) curve also measured together with the adsorption isotherm, the simultaneous use of both curves showed that there were two phases of adsorption in the adsorption of methanol, dimethyl ether, ethene and propane in SAPO-34. The dual-site Langmuir equation gave good fits to the adsorption data to support the interpretation that a second (type 2) adsorption phase occurred in the high-pressure region in addition to a first (type 1) adsorption phase on the acid sites at lower pressures. Adsorption experiments and calculations using binary gas mixtures showed that due to the existence of two types of adsorption, the multicomponent Langmuir isotherm equation (Langmuir competitive adsorption model) calculated incorrect surface concentrations when the concentrations were high. In contrast, the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculated correct surface concentrations in the adsorption of mixtures.

Biofunctionalization of Polyoxometalates with DNA Primers,Their Use in the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Electrochemical Detection of PCR Products

The bioconjugation of polyoxometalates (POMs), which are inorganic metal oxido clusters, to DNA strands to obtain functional labeled DNA primers and their potential use in electrochemical detection have been investigated. Activated monooxoacylated polyoxotungstates [SiW₁₁O₃₉{Sn(CH₂)₂CO}]^8? and [P₂W₁₇O₆₁{Sn(CH₂)₂CO}]^6? have been used to link to a 5′‐NH₂ terminated 21‐mer DNA forward primer through amide coupling. The functionalized primer was characterized by using a battery of techniques, including electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, as well as IR and Raman spectroscopy. The functionality of the POM‐labeled primers was demonstrated through hybridization with a surface‐immobilized probe. Finally, the labeled primers were successfully used in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the PCR products were characterized by using electrophoresis.     

Photosensitized Thymine Dimerization via Delocalized Triplet Excited States

A new mechanism of photosensitized formation of thymine (Thy) dimers is proposed, which involves generation of a delocalized triplet excited state as the key step. This is supported by chemical evidence obtained by combining one benzophenone and two Thy units with different degrees of freedom, whereby the photoreactivity is switched from a clean Paternò–Büchi reaction to a fully chemo‐, regio‐, and stereoselective [2+2] cycloaddition.     

Cooperative Bond Activation and Catalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide at a Group 13 Metal Center

A single‐component ambiphilic system capable of the cooperative activation of protic, hydridic and apolar H? X bonds across a Group 13 metal/activated β‐diketiminato (Nacnac) ligand framework is reported. The hydride complex derived from the activation of H₂ is shown to be a competent catalyst for the highly selective reduction of CO₂ to a methanol derivative. To our knowledge, this process represents the first example of a reduction process of this type catalyzed by a molecular gallium complex.     

Next‐Generation o‐Nitrobenzyl Photolabile Groups for Light‐Directed Chemistry and Microarray Synthesis

Light as an external trigger is a valuable and easily controllable tool for directing chemical reactions with high spatial and temporal accuracy. Two o‐nitrobenzyl derivatives, benzoyl‐ and thiophenyl‐NPPOC, undergo photo‐deprotection with significantly improved efficiency over that of the commonly used NPPOC group. The two‐ and twelvefold increase in photo‐deprotection efficiency was proven using photolithograph synthesis of microarrays.     

Controlled Light‐Mediated Preparation of Gold Nanoparticles by a Norrish Type I Reaction of Photoactive Polymers

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are subjects of broad interest in scientific community due to their promising physicochemical properties. Herein we report the facile and controlled light‐mediated preparation of gold nanoparticles through a Norrish type I reaction of photoactive polymers. These carefully designed polymers act as reagents for the photochemical reduction of gold ions, as well as stabilizers for the in situ generated AuNPs. Manipulating the length and composition of the photoactive polymers allows for control of AuNP size. Nanoparticle diameter can be controlled from 1.5 nm to 9.6 nm.
