Numerical investigation of the conductivity and electron localization of a one dimensional disordered system

Thedc-conductivity of the one-dimensional Anderson model of a disordered system is investigated with two independent numerical methods for systems as large as 10⁴ sites starting from Kubo's formula. In contradiction to the conventional theory of one-dimensional disordered systems a non zero conductivity for finite values of the disorder parameterW/V is found. the eigenstates of the system are investigated. Results for the inverse participation number and the mean square extension of the states are given and compared with the results for the conductivity.Work supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 125 Köln and Project No. Kr627/2)     

Collisional depolarization of excited114Cd 5s5p 3 P 1 atoms by collisions with molecular gases

Depolarization of excited¹¹⁴Cd 5s5p ³ P ₁ atoms induced by collisions with various molecular gases (N₂, H₂, D₂, CO, CO₂, CH₄, C₂H₆, C₂H₄) has been investigated using polarized fluorescence spectroscopy. After pulsed optical excitation of the Cd 5³ P ₁ level with appropriately polarized light the temporal behaviour of Zeeman quantum beats has been observed showing the influence of collisional destruction of orientation and alignment. By analyzing the signal curves at different molecular gas pressures the corresponding depolarization cross sections for¹¹⁴Cd atoms in the 5³ P ₁ state have been obtained. With regard to a test of a nuclear spin decoupling model for the collisions the cross sections were compared with previously measured hyperfine structure transfer cross sections of¹¹³Cd 5s5p ³ P ₁ atoms.     

Comparison of (π− d→nn withdσ(π+ d→pp) to test charge symmetry in the Δ-region

First results on ^– d are reported. The measurements were made using 8 specially designed neutron counters, which were carefully calibratedin situ. The differential cross sections atT =142, 180, 217, and 254 MeV were obtained at four angles between 0° and 90°, they are compared to ⁺ d pp data measured at the same energies and angles with the same setup. At every beam energy, the shape of the angular distributions of ^– d nn and ⁺ d pp is the same to ±2%. The absolute cross sections differ by 1 to 10%. The error in this comparison is ±4% implying a small violation of charge symmetry.Dedicated to Prof. I. laus on the occasion of his 60th birthdayDeceased     

Jet production rates at LEP and the scale of αs

We discuss the scale dependence of _s in connection with jet multiplicities on theZ pole in the framework of perturbative QCD. Several scale defining procedures are applied to jet fractions and compared to recent measurements at LEP.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H.J. Mang on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

Soliton concept in general relativity

Soliton physics has made considerable progress in solving nonlinear problems. This paper is meant to relate the soliten concept to the stationary axisymmetric vacuum fields in general relativity. We present a functional transformation which, working as a nonlinear creation operator, generates gravitational fields of isolated sources. When applied to flat space-time (gravitational vacuum) this operation leads to a nonlinear superposition of an arbitrary number of Kerr particles. This superposition also includes the Tomimatsu-Sato fields. The functional transformations form an infinite-parameter group which contains the Kinnersley-Geroch group as a subgroup.This essay received the second award from the Gravity Research Foundation for the year 1980.-Ed.

Heterocyclic and Carbocyclic 12-π-and 14-π-Systems, 47th Commnunication¹. Synthesis of 7,9-Dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-3H-benz[cd]azualene-3-one and 7,9-Dimethyl-3H-benz[cd]azulene-3-one. A Simple Synthesis of Azulenopseudophenalenons 4, 6, 8-Trimethylazulene ( 3 ) reacts after metalation with lithiumdiisopropyl-amide in ether with bromoacetic acid to the 6, 8-dimethylaltulene-4-propionic acid ( 4 ), which undergoes cyclization to the 7, 9-dimethyl-4, 5-dihydro-3H-benz [cd]-azulene-3-one ( 5 ) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid; oxidation of 5 with 2, 3-dichloro-5, 6-dicyanobenzoquinone yields 7, 9-dimethyl-3H-benz [cd]azulene-3--one ( 1b ). Alkylation of 1b with triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate in CH₂C1₂ gives the 3-ethoxy [cd]benzazulenium tetrafluoroborate ( 6 ).     

Four-jet production in e+e−-annihilation

We investigate the four-jet production processes $e^{+}{e}^{?}\to q\overline{q}ggand{e}^{+}{e}^{?}\to q\overline{q}q\overline{q}$ in lowest order QCD perturbation theory. We estimate that four-jet events should be detectable at a rate of about 5% at the highest PETRA energy. The acoplanarity distribution is calculated and compared to nonperturbative effects.
