We present the results on the evolution of microscopic dynamics of hybrid nanoparticles and their binary mixtures as a function of temperature and wave vector. We find unexpectedly a nonmonotonic dependence of the structural relaxation time of the nanoparticles as a function of the morphology. In binary mixtures of two of the largest nanoparticles studied, we observe re-entrant vitrification as a function of the volume fraction of the smaller nanoparticle, which is unusual for such high diameter ratio. Possible explanation for the observed behavior is provided.  相似文献

Micro‐fabricated bi‐prisms have been used to create an interference pattern from an incident hard X‐ray beam, and the intensity of the pattern probed with fluorescence from a 30 nm‐thick metal film. Maximum fringe visibility exceeded 0.9 owing to the nano‐sized probe and the choice of single‐crystal prism material. A full near‐field analysis is necessary to describe the fringe field intensities, and the transverse coherence lengths were extracted at APS beamline 8‐ID‐I. It is also shown that the maximum number of fringes is dependent only on the complex refractive index of the prism material.  相似文献

Essential oils and their constituents are known to possess antimicrobial activity; however, their inherent volatility is a limiting factor. In order to exploit the antimicrobial efficacy of essential oils, encapsulation within polymeric liposomal systems was undertaken. The liposomes were subsequently polymer-coated in order to further enhance the stability of the formulations. Essential oils distilled from Artemisia afra, Eucalyptus globulus and Melaleuca alternifolia were encapsulated into diastearoyl phosphatidylcholine and diastearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine liposomes employing a reverse phase evaporation methodology. A polyelectrolyte coating was then applied via the layer-by-layer self-deposition technique. A batch of the liposomes was polymer-coated with a 0.15%w/v chitosan solution. Using the minimum inhibitory concentration assay, the liposome-encapsulated, unencapsulated and polymer-coated liposome-encapsulated essential oils were compared in order to observe whether the antimicrobial efficacy was improved with encapsulation and polymer coating. Fractional inhibitory concentrations (FICs) were calculated in order to determine the antimicrobial interactions amongst the lipoid components, polymer coating and essential oils (synergistic, additive, indifferent and antagonistic interactions). With the exception of A. afra, microbial growth was inhibited at lower concentrations for the encapsulated formulations in comparison with the nonencapsulated oils. Synergistic to additive interactions were noted for encapsulated E. globulus (sigmaFIC values 0.25-0.45) and M alternifolia (sigmaFIC values 0.26-0.52) formulations. The addition of the polymer coating did not enhance antimicrobial activity, but owing to their positive effects on membrane stability, its presence is important as a means of extending the shelf life of these formulations. Additionally, the presence of the polymeric coating availed the essential oil at a slower rate. This investigation is a stepping stone towards the promotion of the antimicrobial use of essential oils. The added benefits are that essential oils not only provide effective antimicrobial efficacy, but also promote a "greener" consumerism. Within liposomes, they will enhance dermato-cosmetic properties and increase the marketing image of the final product.  相似文献

We present an X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) study of dynamic transitions in an anisotropic colloid‐polymer dispersion with multiple arrested states. The results provide insight into the mechanism for formation of repulsive glasses, attractive glasses, and networked gels of colloids with weakly adsorbing polymer chains. In the presence of adsorbing polymer chains, we observe three distinct regimes: a state with slow dynamics consisting of finite particles and clusters, for which interparticle interactions are predominantly repulsive; a second dynamic regime occurring above the saturation concentration of added polymer, in which small clusters of nanoparticles form via a short‐range depletion attraction; and a third regime above the overlap concentration in which dynamics of clusters are independent of polymer chain length. The observed complex dynamic state diagram is primarily governed by the structural reorganization of a nanoparticle cluster and polymer chains at the nanoparticle‐polymer surface and in the concentrated medium, which in turn controls the dynamics of the dispersion. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tannins are one of the four key components determining wine organoleptic quality. First, they play an important gustative role since they are responsible for wine astringency and/or bitterness. Second, they act as a structuring compound directly linked to red wine turbidity and stability. This second role is the consequence of their colloidal behavior. In the present work, we demonstrate that wine tannins exhibit different colloidal behaviour whether they are or not galloylated. Procyanidins, when galloylated, are more inclined to form micelles than their non-galloylated form, letting us suggest that they could act as structuring agent in wine. However, the size of the formed micelles is of the nanometer range suggesting that procyanidins, up to trimers, are not involved alone in wine turbidity.  相似文献

A series of beta-methanesulfonate phenethyl radicals bearing a range of electron donating and withdrawing aromatic substituents were generated and studied in a variety of solvent mixtures using nanosecond laser flash photolysis. Rate constants for the formation of the corresponding styrene radical cation via heterolytic loss of the beta-mesylate leaving group were measured using time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The ionization reaction was investigated in a variety of solvents and solvent mixtures including 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, acetonitrile, methanol and water. The influence of substituent electronic effect and solvent polarity on the kinetics of the beta-heterolysis reaction are discussed and assessed using the sigma+ Hammett parameter and Y(OMs) values, respectively. The small magnitude of m calculated for the formation of the 4-methoxystyrene radical cation by ionization of the mesylate group (m = 0.33) in aqueous methanol mixtures is compared to values obtained for the formation of the same radical cation via loss of chloride and bromide where m = 0.56 and m = 0.45, respectively.  相似文献

This work reveals influence of electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile–N ,N‐dimethylformamide solution of different concentrations on nanofiber web color parameters, molecular structure, and heat stability. It is found that fiber diameters depend on concentration through the power law relationship; however, the medium concentration‐based web is characterized by a green–yellow hue, representative of the chromophore color; while, the solvent‐rich and solvent‐poor solution‐based webs give rise to Stokes shifts and ultraviolet‐blue emission bands, attributed to fluorescence. The chromophore structure, present in the neat powder, undergoes changes as a result of electrospinning reflected by the enamine‐to‐ketonitrile conversion and the fraction of C?N conjugation. Blue‐shifting of the C?N conjugation is indicative of a reduction of the π‐electron system, which is coincident with the decreased color saturation value but observed only in the nanofibers prepared from the medium concentration solution. A decrease in the glass transition and an increase in cyclization temperatures also support these findings. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. We disclose a protocol for the palladium‐catalyzed ortho‐selective C? H deuteration of arenes. Phenylacetic acids and benzoic acids are suitable substrates for this reaction. This reaction offers a catalytic route to ortho‐deuterated phenylacetic acids and benzoic acids and demonstrates the sharp difference in reactivity of palladacycle intermediates held together by weak and strong coordination.  相似文献
