Positron-nitrogen molecule scattering at low energies

It is demonstrated that time resolved laser spectroscopy can give atomic lifetime data with an accuracy of better than 0.5%. This is achieved by a single-photon counting delayed coincidence technique, using a mode-locked dye laser for the excitation. Natural radiative lifetimes are measured for the sodium and bismuth atoms.     

Velocity-dependent inertial induction—possible explanation for supergravity shift at solar limb

A quantitative model of inertial induction has been earlier proposed by the author which not only results in the exact equivalence of inertial and gravitational masses but also gives rise to an exceedingly small drag dependent on the velocity with respect to the mean rest frame of the universe. This leads to a cosmological redshift in close agreement with the observation. When this velocity drag due to local interaction is considered it is seen that a significant proportion of the secular retardation of the earth’s spin and the moon’s orbital motion can be attributed to this drag. This also resolves the problem of the moon’s close approach to the earth in the past as suggested by a purely tidal friction theory. The observed large secular acceleration of the Phobos is also explained. The present article shows that local interaction also yields a redshift. When applied to the solar radiation it is seen that the observed supergravity shift at the limb can be very satisfactorily explained.     

X-ray diffraction line profile from the aggregate of distorted crystallites. II

An expression for the fourth moment of the line profile in terms of several strain derivatives and the possibility of measuring the ‘wavelength’ of crystal distortions (λ) for any sinusoidally varying component of the strain are available. The experimental means for evaluating such strain derivatives in the expression for the fourth moment was earlier described. A numerical method for evaluating this wavelength and its subsequent use to determineλ in several samples ofα-brass is presented here. The data used are taken from the earlier paper of the authors. An attempt has been made to interpret the values ofλ and their changes with cold working and annealing in terms of lattice strain.     

Angular heterocycles. A convenient synthesis of 6-N-(acetylanilino)-5H-benzo[a]phenothiazin-5-one, 6-N-(acetylanilino)-5H-benzo[a]phenoxazin-5-ones and their derivatives

The reaction of 2-N-(acetylanilino)-3-chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone ( 2 ) with bifunctional aromatic amines afforded angular heterocycles 6 and 7 . Reductive acetylation of 7 provided o-acyl 9 and O,N-diacyl 10 derivatives depending upon the reaction conditions. The ir, uv, pmr and mass spectral data are also presented.     

Construction of improved estimators in multiparameter estimation for continuous exponential families

A unified theory of simultaneous estimation of parameters for the continuous exponential family is presented. Estimators are constructed that improve on the standard ones (the maximum likelihood, UMVUE or best invariant estimator). These improved estimators shift the standard ones towards possibly non-zero points or data based points.     

Phytol-based novel adjuvants in vaccine formulation: 2. assessment of efficacy in the induction of protective immune responses to lethal bacterial infections in mice

Background  

Adjuvants are known to significantly enhance vaccine efficacy. However, commercial adjuvants often have limited use because of toxicity in humans. The objective of this study was to determine the comparative effectiveness of a diterpene alcohol, phyto l and its hydrogenated derivative PHIS-01, relative to incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA), a commonly used adjuvant in augmenting protective immunity in mice against E. coli and S. aureus, and in terms of inflammatory cytokines.     

Stochastic Games with Average Payoff Criterion

We study two-person stochastic games on a Polish state and compact action spaces and with average payoff criterion under a certain ergodicity condition. For the zero-sum game we establish the existence of a value and stationary optimal strategies for both players. For the nonzero-sum case the existence of Nash equilibrium in stationary strategies is established under certain separability conditions. Accepted 9 January 1997     

An experimental investigation on impact response of laminated composite beams

Experiments based on a new technique were carried out to study the response of glass/epoxy laminated composite beams subjected to impact loading. A number of glass/epoxy composite beams with different fiber orientations, spans, thicknesses, and support conditions were impacted with an instrumented impact hammer and the responses were picked up using an accelerometer in conjunction with a spectrum analyzer. Free vibration test for some sample beams were also carried out to determine their fundamental frequencies.
