Band gap and band offsets of GaNAsBi lattice matched to GaAs substrate

In this paper, we calculate the band gap and the band discontinuities of a GaN _y AsBi _x structure lattice matched to GaAs substrate using the conduction and the valence band anticrossing models at the same time. The results obtained show a good agreement with experiment. The nitrogen and the bismuth concentrations leading to a wavelength emission of 1.55 μm have been determined (x = 3.5%, y = 2%). This structure shows a good electron confinement resulting in a high characteristic temperature.     

High-Q factor single mode circular photonic crystal nano-resonator

In this work, the analysis, fabrication and optical characterization of a two-dimensional circular photonic crystal (2D-CPC) nano-resonator based on an air/GaAs/air slab waveguide are presented. Four InAs/InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) stacked layers emitting around 1300 nm at room temperature were embedded in a GaAs waveguide layer grown on an Al_0.7Ga_0.3As layer and GaAs substrate. The patterning of the structure and the membrane release were achieved by using electron beam lithography, ICP plasma etching and selective wet etching of the AlGaAs sacrificial layer. The micro-luminescence spectrum recorded from the fabricated nano-cavity shows a narrow optical transition at the resonance wavelength of about 1282 nm with a FWHM and Q-factor of 6.2 Å and more than 2000, respectively.     

Dynamic Bivariate Mortality Modelling

The dependence structure of the life statuses plays an important role in the valuation of life insurance products involving multiple lives. Although the mortality of individuals is well studied in the literature, their dependence remains a challenging field. In this paper, the main objective is to introduce a new approach for analyzing the mortality dependence between two individuals in a couple. It is intended to describe in a dynamic framework the joint mortality of married couples in terms of marginal mortality rates. The proposed framework is general and aims to capture, by adjusting some parametric form, the desired effect such as the “broken-heart syndrome”. To this end, we use a well-suited multiplicative decomposition, which will serve as a building block for the framework to relate the dependence structure and the marginals, and we make the link with existing practice of affine mortality models. Finally, given that the framework is general, we propose some illustrative examples and show how the underlying model captures the main stylized facts of bivariate mortality dynamics.

     

Rains of solitons in a figure-of-eight passively mode-locked fiber laser

We report experimental observation of rains of solitons in figure-of-eight fiber laser passively mode-locked through nonlinear optical loop mirror. Soliton pulses are created from an extended noisy background and drift until they reach a condensed phase comprising several tens of aggregated solitons. The observation of this dynamics tends to strengthen the idea of the universality of the collective behavior of solitons.     

On the oscillation of fourth order strongly superlinear and strongly sublinear dynamic equations

We establish some new criteria for the oscillation of fourth order nonlinear dynamic equations on a time scale. We investigate the case of strongly superlinear and the case of strongly sublinear equations subject to various conditions. Some examples are given here to illustrate our main results.     

para-Acylcalix[n]arenes: from molecular to macroscopic assemblies

The para-acylcalix[n]arenes possess a very rich capacity to self-assemble into a wide variety of structures and sizes ranging from molecular assemblies through dimeric capsules, molecular sheets to nanoparticles. All these assemblies are capable of taking guest molecules and in the process of this inclusion discrete nanoscopic reaction vessels may be formed for photochemistry. Interestingly this uptake of quite large organic molecules occurs in the bulk in non-porous crystals without loss of crystallinity. At the air-water interface either as Langmuir monolayers or as colloidal suspensions the para-acylcalix[n]arenes show interaction with ionic species. The extension from para-acylcalix[4]arenes to para-acylcalix[8]arenes is in its infancy but already there is much promise for novel assemblies to be found.     

Extraction and purification procedures for simultaneous quantification of phenolic xenoestrogens and steroid estrogens in river sediment by gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry

A sensitive and simple method based on ultrasonication extraction with a hexane/acetone (2:1, v/v) mixture, followed by clean up of the extract by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) detection, has been developed and validated for the analysis of 20 estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EEDCs) including phenolic xenoestrogens, synthetic and natural estrogens in river sediment. After extraction and purification, analytes are derivatised with a BSTFA/TMCS/pyridine (49:1:50, v/v/v) mixture and quantified by GC/MS. The GC/MS method involves switching between electron ionisation (EI) and chemical ionisation (CI); it also switches between selected ion storage and tandem mass spectrometry detection. The applicability of the method has been demonstrated by analysing extracts of French river sediments for which bioanalytical tests (in vitro) had already shown that they were impacted by estrogenic endocrine disrupters. The biological contribution of all the products detected in each sediment extract was compared to the estrogenic activity measured by bioassays.
