Structural materials containing silicon are produced in single celled organisms through to higher plants and animals. Hydrated amorphous silica is a colloidal mineral of infinite functionality that is formed into structures with microscopic and macroscopic form. Proteins and proteoglycans are suggested to play a critical role in the catalysis of silica polycondensation and in structure direction during the formation of these magnificent structures. This article extends knowledge on the effect of protein containing biosilica extracts from Equisetum telmateia on the kinetics of silica formation and structure regulation. Utilising potassium silicon catecholate as the source of soluble silicon, bioextracts obtained from plant silica by dissolution of the siliceous phase with aqueous HF following extensive acid digestion of the plant cell wall were found to modify the kinetic rate constants for the formation of small silicic acid oligomers under circumneutral pH conditions and to modify the solubility of silicic acid in solution. Addition of the bioextracts at ca. 1 wt% to the reaction medium reduced the sizes and range of sizes of the fundamental silica particles formed and led to the formation of crystalline polymorphs of silica under conditions of ca. neutral pH, room temperature and in the absence of multiply charged cations, conditions assumed to be relevant to the biological mineralization environment. The ability of biological organisms to regulate the formation of silica structures with prevention of crystallinity is discussed as are the implications of this study in terms of the generation of new materials with specific form and function for industrial application.  相似文献

The results of a numerical study of the viscous oscillating flow around a circular cylinder at low Keulegan–Carpenter numbers (KC) and frequency parameters (β) are presented in this paper. The finite element method was used for the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations in the formulation where the streamfunction and vorticity are the field variables. The computation was conducted at Keulegan–Carpenter numbers extending up to KC=15 and frequency parameters ranging between β=6 and 100. At low values of the Keulegan–Carpenter number the flow remains symmetrical. As the Keulegan–Carpenter number is increased over a certain value which depends also on the frequency parameter, asymmetries appear in the flow which are eventually amplified and lead finally to complex vortex-shedding patterns, some of which are markedly different from those observed at higher frequency parameters. The solution revealed that although for certain values of KC and β the shedding of vortices is periodic, there also exists a complicated flow regime in which the flow is not periodic but switches between different modes in consecutive cycles of flow oscillation. For the various flow cases examined, the traces of the hydrodynamic forces are presented and the hydrodynamic coefficients and RMS values of the in-line force are compared with experimental evidence. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction regulates the rate of energy generation in the stellar CN cycle. Because discrepancies have been found in the analysis and interpretation of previous capture data, we have measured the 14N(p,gamma)15O excitation function for energies in the range E(lab)(p)=155-524 keV. Fits of these data using R-matrix theory yield a value for the S factor at zero energy of 1.68+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.16(syst) keV b, which is significantly smaller than the previous result. The corresponding reduction in the stellar reaction rate for 14N(p,gamma)15O has a number of interesting consequences, including an impact on estimates for the age of the Galaxy derived from globular clusters.  相似文献

Mynard, in: Elliott Pearl (Ed.), Function Space Topologies, Open Problems in Topology, vol. 2, Elsevier, 2007, pp. 15-22]) the intersection of all admissible topologies on the set C(Y,Z) of all continuous maps of an arbitrary space Y into an arbitrary space Z, is always the greatest splitting topology. However, this intersection maybe not admissible. In the case, where Y is a locally compact Hausdorff space the compact-open topology on the set C(Y,Z) is splitting and admissible (see [R.H. Fox, On topologies for function spaces, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 51 (1945) 429-432; R. Arens, A topology for spaces of transformations, Ann. of Math. 47 (1946) 480-495; R. Arens, J. Dugundji, Topologies for function spaces, Pacific J. Math. 1 (1951) 5-31]), which means that the intersection of all admissible topologies on C(Y,Z) is admissible. In [R. Arens, J. Dugundji, Topologies for function spaces, Pacific J. Math. 1 (1951) 5-31] an example of a non-locally compact Hausdorff space Y is given having the same property for the case, where Z=[0,1], that is on the set C(Y,[0,1]) the compact-open topology is splitting and admissible. This space Y is the set [0,1] with a topology τ, whose semi-regular reduction coincides with the usual topology on [0,1]. Also, in [R. Arens, J. Dugundji, Topologies for function spaces, Pacific J. Math. 1 (1951) 5-31, Theorem 5.3] another example of a non-locally compact space Y is given such that the compact-open topology on the set C(Y,[0,1]) is distinct from the greatest splitting topology.In this paper first we construct non-locally compact Hausdorff spaces Y such that the intersection of all admissible topologies on the set C(Y,Z), where Z is an arbitrary regular space, is admissible. Furthermore, for a Hausdorff splitting topology t on C(Y,Z) we find sufficient conditions in order that t to be distinct from the greatest splitting topology. Using this result, we construct some concrete non-locally compact spaces Y such that the compact-open topology on C(Y,Z), where Z is a Hausdorff space, is distinct from the greatest splitting topology. Consider a general system (or subsystem) with a single queue. In this context, we compare three different disciplines:ROS (Random Order of Service),RI (Random Insertion), andRAP (Randomly Assigned Priorities). The first of these (ROS) is a classical discipline; the other two are introduced in this paper. It turns out that the waiting time distributions for two of these disciplines are exactly the same, while the third discipline has strikingly different characteristics.Work done by this author while he was with IBM Zurich Research Laboratory.  相似文献
