Qualitative and quantitative determination of Atractylodes rhizome using ultra‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with linear ion trap–Orbitrap mass spectrometry with data‐dependent processing

A quick and effective workflow based on ultra‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with electron spray ionization and LTQ‐Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC‐LTQ‐Orbitrap MS) was established for compositional analysis and screening of the characteristic compounds of three species of Atractylodes rhizome for quality evaluation. This technique was employed to determine the seven main components in Atractylodes rhizome samples. Ultimately, 78 constituents were identified; of these, seven characteristic compounds were selected for species discrimination, comprising atractylodin (63), atractylenolide I (43), atractylenolide II (49), atractylenolide III (53), atractylon (69), methyl‐atractylenolide II (54) and (4E,6E,12E)‐tetradecadecatriene‐8,10‐diyne‐1,3‐diacetate (59). The seven main compounds, including six characteristic compounds, were simultaneously determined in 29 batches of Atractylodes rhizome samples. Thus, the method validation showed acceptable results. Quantitative analysis showed significantly different contents of the seven main components among the three species of Atractylodes rhizome, which indicates possible distinctions in the pharmacological effects. This established method can simultaneously provide qualitative and quantitative results for compositional characterization of Atractylodes rhizomes and for quality control.     

Alkaloids from Juglans Mandshurica maxim induce distinctive cell death in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

The aim of this work was to further investigate the anticancer potential of Juglans mandshurica Maxim, including the separation of active constituents and their anti-proliferative effects with underlying mechanism of action. Five alkaloids (1–5) were isolated from the bark of J. mandshurica. Among them, 1 showed the highest cytotoxic activities against Hep3B and HepG2 cells with an IC50 values of 61.80 and 56.24 μM, respectively. Therefore, the cellular mechanism involved 1 was subsequently studied. Our results showed that 1 markedly caused apoptosis and autophagy, but without cell cycle arrest in HepG2 cells. Interestingly, only autophagic cell death was induced in 1-treated Hep3B cells. It is concluded that the isolated alkaloids exerted a certain anti-hepatoma potential, and our results may provide a basis for the further investigation of the alkaloids extracted from J. mandshurica.     

Split least‐squares finite element methods for non‐Fickian flow in porous media

In this article, we introduce two least‐squares finite element procedures for parabolic integro‐differential equations arising in the modeling of non‐Fickian flow in porous media. By selecting the least‐squares functional properly the presented procedure can be split into two independent subprocedures, one subprocedure is for the primitive unknown and the other is for the flux. The optimal order convergence analysis is established. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of the introduced schemes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of carbon nanotube—nanodiamond hierarchical nanostructures and their polyurea nanocomposites

Hierarchical carbon nanostructures (HCNs) comprising functionalized nanodiamond particles (ND) covalently bonded to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through urea or ethylene diamine linkers were synthesized using wet chemistry technique. Atomic force microscopy, transmission electron spectroscopy, and scanning electron spectroscopy reveal the pearl-necklace-like morphology of new HCNs with up to 50% of the CNT surface decorated by ND particles. Nanocomposites fabricated using polyuria/polyurethane hybrid polymer matrix and 0.2 wt.% of HCNs as a reinforcing filler show a 64% increase in tensile and elongation strength at break relatively to neat polymer.     

Simulating ion clustering in potassium thiocyanate aqueous solutions with various ion-water models

Using a molecular dynamics simulation technique,we compared several commonly used ion-water models to describe the microscopic structures and dynamics in KSCN aqueous solutions.Results are compared with observations of femtosecond infrared vibrational-energy transfer and anisotropy measurements.The Jorgensen/TIP4P model is found to provide the best reproduction of clustering properties such as percentage of clustered ions,cluster-size distribution,concentration dependence of the water,and ion-rotation time constants.
