A major difficulty in the study of large-scale complex systems involving human decision-making with non-linear collective effects is that of obtaining pertinent data at the desired level of detail. A controlled experiment involving real commuters in a hypothetical computer simulated traffic system is described as an alternative approach of conducting observational studies to support the modelling of such complex dynamic interactive decision systems. An overview of the principal characteristics of the traffic system's evolution obtained in this experiment is presented. Also illustrated are the features of a proposed behavioral framework where users are viewed as boundedly rational seekers of a satisfactory choice outcome.  相似文献

A series of thermotropic aromatic polyesters based on a triad ester mesogenic unit containing an arylsulfonyl substituted hydroquinone group and a decamethylene spacer group was prepared. The large arylsulfonyl substituent was substituted in the para-position with either electron donating or accepting groups to study the effect of steric and polar interactions on the thermal transitions of these polymers and on the thermodynamic parameters of their isotropization transitions. All polymers formed nematic melts, and a regular decrease in T1, ΔH1 and ΔS1 was observed with increasing molecular radius of the substituted hydroquinone group. However, a polarity or polarizability effect was superimposed on these relationships. Model compounds containing the same aromatic ester triad were prepared and their thermotropic properties were compared to those of the polymers. Essentially identical effects were observed for both.  相似文献

Optically pure methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, and benzyl (R)-malolactonate were prepared from (S)-(-)-malic acid and were polymerized in the bulk with tetraethylammonium benzoate as the initiator to yield high-molecular-weight, crystalline polymers. The optical purity of methyl and benzyl malolactonate was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy of the β-lactone complexed with a chiral europium shift reagent. Enantiomeric excesses of 100% were found (the experimental error was 3%). Optically active poly(β-malic acid) was obtained from optically active poly[benzyl (S)-malate] by catalytic hydrogenolysis of the pendent benzyl esters. Ethyl and benzyl (R)-malolactonate were also copolymerized, and the benzyl esters of the resulting copolymer were converted into carboxylic acid units by hydrogenolysis.  相似文献

This work reports dynamic video images of the influence of ultrasonic cavitation on the sonocrystallisation of ice at a microscopic level. This has been achieved through the construction of a unique ultrasonic system for an optical microscope. The system consists of (1). an ultrasonic cold stage, (2). a temperature control system, and (3). a microscope and imaging setup. This allows the temperature of a sample to be systematically controlled while it is subjected to simultaneous excitation with alternating pressures in the ultrasonic frequency range. Both the amplitude of excitation and the frequency can be varied. Experiments on ice crystals in pure water and sucrose solutions were conducted. Three distinct phenomena were observed. Firstly, there is a tendency for cavitation bubbles to form at the grain boundaries between ice crystals. Secondly, there is a progressive melting of ice by cavitation bubbles which appear to eat their way into the ice phase. Thirdly, the dendritic ice structures may fragment under the influence of ultrasound, thus increasing the number of nuclei which may subsequently grow (secondary nucleation). These observations form the basis of a significantly enhanced understanding and exploitation of the sonocrystallisation of ice.  相似文献

Physical aspects of an operation of the GaAs-based InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well (QW) VCSELs with the intentionally detuned optical cavities have been considered in the present paper using the comprehensive three-dimensional self-consistent optical–electrical–thermal-gain simulation. In GaAs-based structures, very good DBR resonator mirrors and a very efficient methods to confine radially both the current spreading and the electromagnetic field with the aid of oxide apertures may be applied. It has been found using the above simulation that even currently available immature technology enables manufacturing the above devices emitting radiation of wavelengths over 1.20 μm. In particular, while the room-temperature 1.30-μm lasing emission is still beyond possibilities of the InGaAs/GaAs QW VCSELs, these structures may offer analogous 1.25-μm emission, especially for the high-power and/or high-temperature operation.  相似文献

Generation, collection, and characterization of gold, silver, and palladium nanoparticles and nano-agglomerates (collectively “nanoparticles”) have been explored. The nanoparticles were generated with a spark aerosol generator (Palas GFG-1000). They were collected using a deposition cell under diffusion and thermophoresis. The shapes and sizes of the deposited particles were measured using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM images showed that the particles were in the range of 8–100 nm in diameter, and their shapes varied from nearly spherical to highly non-spherical. Thermophoresis enhanced the deposition of nanoparticles (over the diffusive or the isothermal deposition) in all cases. Further, the size distributions of the nanoparticles generated in the gas phase (aerosol) were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS 3080, TSI) spectrometer. The SMPS results show that an increase in the spark frequency of the generator shifted the size distributions of the nanoparticles to larger diameters, and the total particle mass production rate increased linearly with increase in the spark frequency. The computational fluid dynamics code Fluent (Ansys) was used to model the flow in the deposition cell, and the computed results conform to the observations.  相似文献

Infrared (IR) and Raman spectra were obtained for N,N′‐dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) in the solid state and in CHCl3 solution. Structures and vibrational spectra of isolated, gas‐phase DCC molecules with C2 and Ci symmetries, computed at the B3‐LYP/cc‐pVTZ level, show that the IR and Raman spectra provide convincing evidence for a C2 structure in both the solid state and in CHCl3 solution. Using a scaled quantum‐chemical force field, these density functional theory calculations have provided detailed assignments of the observed IR and Raman bands in terms of potential energy distributions. Comparison of solid‐state and solution spectra, together with a Raman study of the melting behaviour of DCC, revealed that no solid‐state effects were evident in the spectra. Speech recognition in noise improves with combined acoustic and electric stimulation compared to electric stimulation alone [Kong et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117, 1351-1361 (2005)]. Here the contribution of fundamental frequency (F0) and low-frequency phonetic cues to speech recognition in combined hearing was investigated. Normal-hearing listeners heard vocoded speech in one ear and low-pass (LP) filtered speech in the other. Three listening conditions (vocode-alone, LP-alone, combined) were investigated. Target speech (average F0=120 Hz) was mixed with a time-reversed masker (average F0=172 Hz) at three signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). LP speech aided performance at all SNRs. Low-frequency phonetic cues were then removed by replacing the LP speech with a LP equal-amplitude harmonic complex, frequency and amplitude modulated by the F0 and temporal envelope of voiced segments of the target. The combined hearing advantage disappeared at 10 and 15 dB SNR, but persisted at 5 dB SNR. A similar finding occurred when, additionally, F0 contour cues were removed. These results are consistent with a role for low-frequency phonetic cues, but not with a combination of F0 information between the two ears. The enhanced performance at 5 dB SNR with F0 contour cues absent suggests that voicing or glimpsing cues may be responsible for the combined hearing benefit.  相似文献

Single- and multi-shot ablation thresholds of gold films in the thickness range of 31-1400 nm were determined employing a Ti:sapphire laser delivering pulses of 28 fs duration, 793 nm center wavelength at 1 kHz repetition rate. The gold layers were deposited on BK7 glass by an electron beam evaporation process and characterized by atomic force microscopy and ellipsometry. A linear dependence of the ablation threshold fluence Fth on the layer thickness d was found for d ≤ 180 nm. If a film thickness of about 180 nm was reached, the damage threshold remained constant at its bulk value. For different numbers of pulses per spot (N-on-1), bulk damage thresholds of ∼0.7 J cm−2 (1-on-1), 0.5 J cm−2 (10-on-1), 0.4 J cm−2 (100-on-1), 0.25 J cm−2 (1000-on-1), and 0.2 J cm−2 (10000-on-1) were obtained experimentally indicating an incubation behavior. A characteristic layer thickness of Lc ≈ 180 nm can be defined which is a measure for the heat penetration depth within the electron gas before electron-phonon relaxation occurs. Lc is by more than an order of magnitude larger than the optical absorption length of α−1 ≈ 12 nm at 793 nm wavelength.  相似文献

This Letter reports on work performed to locate and interrogate a nonlinear scatterer in a linearly elastic medium through the use of a time reversal mirror in combination with nonlinear dynamics. Time reversal provides the means to spatially and temporally localize elastic energy on a scattering feature while the nonlinear dynamics spectrum allows one to determine whether the scatterer is nonlinear (e.g., mechanical damage). Here elastic waves are measured in a solid and processed to extract the nonlinear elastic response. The processed elastic signals are then time reversed, rebroadcast, and found to focus on the nonlinear scatterer, thus defining a time-reversed nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy process. Additionally, the focusing process illuminates the complexity of the nonlinear scatterer in both space and time, providing a means to image and investigate the origins and physical mechanisms of the nonlinear elastic response.  相似文献
