Single-phase AC losses in prototype HTS conductors for superconducting power transmission lines

We report single-phase AC loss measurements on 8-, 4-, and 3-layer, multi-strand, HTS prototype conductors for power transmission lines. We use both calorimetric and electrical techniques. The agreement between the two techniques suggests that the interlayer current distribution in 1-m long conductors are representative of those in long conductors. The losses for the 8- and 4-layer conductors are in rough agreement, with the 8-layer losses being somewhat lower. The 3-layer conductor losses are substantially higher — probably due to unbalanced azimuthal currents for this configuration.     

Inclusive η production at high pT at the ISR

The inclusive η production cross section at the CERN ISR has been measured for p_T values of up to 11 GeV/c. We find that the $\text{η}\text{π}{}^0$ cross-section ratio has an average value of 0.55 ± 0.07 and varies little with p_T.     

Secondary electron emission yield behaviour of polymers

The secondary electron emission yields of highly-insulating, thin polymer foils have been measured for incident primary beam energies, 50 ? E_p ? 2500 eV. The results follow closely a ‘universal’ reduced yield curve determined by the energy loss law, dE_p/dx = -A/E_p^n-1, where n = 2 and A is a constant proportional to the density of the solid, as predicted by the elementary theory of Lye and Dekker (1957). This behaviour remains true up to high primary beam energies and, as such, is unique to these low density solids.     

Test of new shell model wave functions by means of 166 MeV alpha particle inelastic scattering

The nuclear wave functions for the first 2⁺ levels of ²⁴Mg, ²⁸Si and ⁵⁸Ni obtained by diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian in a large shell model basis are used to calculate 166 MeV α-particle inelastic scattering cross sections. The results are compared with experimental measurements. Good agreement is found for ²⁴Mg and ²⁸Si but the model wave function seems to be inadequate for describing ⁵⁸Ni.     

Schulzeines A-C, new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors from the marine sponge Penares schulzei

Three new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, schulzeines A-C (1-3), were isolated from the marine sponge Penares schulzei. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis and chemical degradations to be the isoquinoline alkaloids, encompassing two amino acids, and C(28) fatty acid, the last of which was sulfated. Absolute stereochemistry of schulzeines was determined by application of the modified Mosher analysis to fragments obtained by chemical degradation. Schulzeines A-C inhibit alpha-glucosidase with IC(50) values of 48-170 nM.     

Peptide transformation leading to peptide-peptidosulfonamide hybrids and oligo peptidosulfonamides

The sulfonamide moiety was introduced as a potential transition state isostere of the hydrolysis of the amide bond. Subsequently, the increased acidity of a sulfonamide N-H as compared to a regular amide N-H was explored in the development of peptidosulfonamide synthetic receptor molecules for binding and catalysis. The required building blocks for these compounds were accessible via an efficient synthesis, which also enabled the synthesis of oligopeptidosulfonamides as well as peptidosulfonamide-betapeptide hybrids. The structural consequences of the introduction of the peptidosulfonamide residues were studied and were further explored by the synthesis of cyclic peptidosulfonamides e.g. by ring-closing metathesis.     

Palladium catalysed aryl enol ether synthesis from vinyl triflates

Vinyl triflates can be efficiently converted into the corresponding aryl enol ethers by treatment with a phenol, NaO(t)Bu and a catalyst generated from Pd2dba3 and 2-(di-(t)Bu-phosphino)biphenyl.     

Massadine,a novel geranylgeranyltransferase type I inhibitor from the marine sponge Stylissa aff. massa

Massadine, a highly oxygenated alkaloid, was isolated from the marine sponge Stylissa aff. massa as an inhibitor of geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase I). The structure of massadine has been deduced from spectral data. Massidine inhibited GGTase I from Candida albicans with an IC(50) value of 3.9 microM. [structure: see text]     

Two-kaon correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 a GeV/c

Two-particle interferometry of positive kaons is studied in Pb+Pb collisions at mean transverse momenta approximately 0.25 and 0.91 GeV/c. A three-dimensional analysis was applied to the lower p(T) data, while a two-dimensional analysis was used for the higher p(T) data. We find that the source-size parameters are consistent with the m(T) scaling curve observed in pion-correlation measurements in the same collisions, and that the duration time of kaon emission is consistent with zero within the experimental sensitivity.
