Summary Microgram amounts of metal ions have been separated using stannic antimonate paper. Most of the separations can be accomplished within 15 minutes.

A comparative study of various computational approaches in calculating the structure of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent beta-lyase protein. The importance of protein environment

Various computational approaches, using molecular mechanics (Amber), semiempirical (AM1), density functional (B3LYP), and various ONIOM methods, have been comparatively investigated for the structure of Escherichia coli NifS CsdB protein. The structure of the entire monomer containing 407 amino acid residues and 579 surrounding water molecules has been optimized. The full geometry optimization in the "active site-only" approach (including only active site atoms) has been found to give the largest root-mean-square (RMS) deviation from the X-ray structure; a much better agreement has been achieved by keeping the atoms leading to the backbones of some amino acids frozen in their positions in the X-ray structure. The best agreement has been attained by including the surrounding protein in the calculations using the two-layer ONIOM (B3LYP:Amber) approach. The results presented in this study conclusively demonstrate the importance of the protein/active-site interaction on the active-site structure of the enzyme. The present theoretical study represents the largest system studied at the ONIOM level to date, containing 7992 atoms, including 84 atoms in the QM region and rest in the MM region.     

A comparison of the mechanism for the reductive half-reaction between pea seedling and other copper amine oxidases (CAOs)

In a previous DFT study a mechanism for the reductive half-reaction of pea seedling amine oxidase (PSAO) was suggested. In many of the suggested steps a lysine at the active site plays an important role. However, this lysine is not found in other amine oxidases. The primary aim of the present DFT study is therefore to investigate alternative mechanisms for those amine oxidases (CAO) where the lysine residue is not present. One of the most important roles suggested for the lysine in PSAO was to protonate the O2-site of TPQ before the critical Cbond;H bond cleavage of the substrate. In the absence of lysine the O2-site of TPQ is now suggested to be protonated by a water ligand on the copper metal complex, in line with experimental suggestions. In other steps the role of lysine is taken over by an asparagine. All results are compared with experimental observations and good agreement is generally found.     

Polymerizable benzophenone derivatives for labeling vinyl acetate‐butylacrylate latex particles

We describe the synthesis and characterization of three new polymerizable benzophenone derivatives [2‐acryloxy‐5‐methyl benzophenone ( 8 ), 4′‐dimethylamino‐2‐acryloxy‐5‐methyl benzophenone ( 9 ), and 4′‐dimethylamino‐2‐(β‐acryloxyethyl)oxy‐5‐methyl benzophenone ( 10 )]. We show that these monomers can successfully be incorporated into vinyl acetate (VAc) copolymer latex particles. These particles were prepared by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization and mini‐emulsion polymerization of VAc with butylacrylate (BA) for VAc/BA = 4/1 by weight. The two monomers 9 and 10 bearing the 4′‐dimethylamino group satisfy the important spectroscopic criteria required of a dye to serve as an acceptor chromophore for nonradiative energy transfer from phenanthrene (Phe) as the donor. Their UV absorption spectra suggest significant overlap with the emission spectrum of Phe, which can be incorporated into P(VAc‐co‐BA) latex through copolymerization with 9‐acryloxymethyl Phe ( 2 ). In addition, these chromophores provide a window in their absorption spectra for excitation of the Phe chromophore at 300 nm. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A study on the radon concentration in water in Coonoor, India

The gas collection measurement method was employed to determine radon activity concentrations in the water of Coonoor. Open well water, dam water and stream water have been investigated for their radon concentrations. It is observed that the highest radon concentration is in the open well water and the lowest in stream water. From these measurements, the corresponding annual effective ingestion dose is determined.     

Oxidation of secondary alcohols byN-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMO) catalyzed by atrans-dioxo ruthenium(VI) complex or perruthenate complex: A kinetic study

Thetrans-dioxo ruthenium (VI) complex, [P(C₆H₅)₃C₆H₅CH₂]⁺[Ru(O)₂OAcCl₂] or tetrapropylammonium perruthenate catalyzes the oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones byN-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMO). Kinetic studies showed the formation of a complex between catalyst and substrate (alcohol) as the first step in the mechanism.     

Self-Assembly of Benzimidazole-Derived Tris-NHC Ligands and AgI-Ions to Hexanuclear Organometallic Cages and Their Unusual Transmetalation Chemistry

Multi-ligand self-assembly to attain the Ag^I-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-built hexanuclear organometallic cages of composition [Ag₆( 3 a , b )₄](PF₆)₆ from the reaction of benzimidazole-derived tris(azolium) salts [H₃- 3 a , b ](PF₆)₃ with Ag₂O was achieved. The molecular structures of the cages were established by X-ray diffraction studies along with NMR and MS analyses. The existence of a single assembly in solution was supported by diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) ¹H NMR spectra. Further, transmetalation reactions of these self-assembled complexes, [Ag₆( 3 a , b )₄](PF₆)₆, with Cu^I/Au^I-ions provided various coinage metal-NHC complexes having diverse molecular compositions, which included the first example of a hexanuclear Cu^I-dodecacarbene complex, [Cu₆( 3 b )₄](PF₆)₆.
