Some results on linear nabla Riemann-Liouville fractional difference equations

In this paper, we establish some criteria for boundedness, stability properties, and separation of solutions of autonomous nonlinear nabla Riemann-Liouville scalar fractional difference equations. To derive these results, we prove the variation of constants formula for nabla Riemann-Liouville fractional difference equations.     

Syntomic regulators and special values of p-adic L-functions

In this paper p-adic analogs of the Lichtenbaum Conjectures are proven for abelian number fields F and odd prime numbers p, which generalize Leopoldt's p-adic class number formula, and express special values of p-adic L-functions in terms of orders of K-groups and higher p-adic regulators. The approach uses syntomic regulator maps, which are the p-adic equivalent of the Beilinson regulator maps. They can be compared with étale regulators via the Fontaine-Messing map, and computations of Bloch-Kato in the case that p is unramified in F lead to results about generalized Coates-Wiles homomorphisms and cyclotomic characters. Gross–Pitaevskii dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates and superfluid turbulence

The Gross–Pitaevskii equation, also called the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), describes the dynamics of low-temperature superflows and Bose–Einstein Condensates (BEC). We review some of our recent NLSE-based numerical studies of superfluid turbulence and BEC stability. The relations with experiments are discussed.     

Molecular structure and conformation of gaseous bromoacetyl chloride and bromoacetyl bromide as determined by electron diffraction

Bromoacetyl chloride and bromoacetyl bromide are studied by gas phase electron diffraction at nozzle-tip temperatures of 70°C and 77°C, respectively. Both compounds exist as mixtures of anti and gauche conformers. The mole fraction anti, with uncertainties estimated at 2σ, was found to be 0.474(0.080) for bromoacetyl chloride and 0.615(0.069) for bromoacetyl bromide. The results for the distance (r_a)and angle (∠α) parameters, with parenthesized uncertainties of 2σ including estimated uncertainty in the electron wave length and correlation effects are as follows: (1) bromoacetyl chloride, r(C-H) = 1.086(0.062) Å, r(CO) = 1.188(0.009) Å, r(C-C) = 1.519(0.018) Å, r(C-Cl) = 1.789(0.011) Å, r(C-Br) = 1.935(0.012) Å, ∠C-CO = 127.6(1.3)°, ∠C-C-Cl = 111.3(1.1)°, ∠C-C-Br = 111.0(1.5)°, ∠H-C-H = 109.5°(assumed), $\text{}\text{?}$/o (gauche torsion angle relative to 0° for the anti form) = 110.0°(assumed); (2) bromoacetyl bromide, r(C-H) =1.110(0.088) Å, r(C=O) = 1.175(0.013) Å, r(C-C) = 1.513(0.020) Å, r(CO-Br) = 1.987(0.020) Å, r(CH₂-Br) = 1.915(0.020) Å, ∠C-CO = 129.4(1.7)°, ∠CH₂-CO-Br = 110.7(1.5)°, ∠CO-CH₂-Br = 111.7(1.8)°, ∠H-C-H = 109.5°(assumed), ∠ø (gauche torsion angle relative to 0° for the anti form) = 105.0°(assumed). The structural results are discussed in connection with the structures of related molecules.     

On the restriction of cross characteristic representations of 2 F 4(q) to proper subgroups

We prove that the restriction of any nontrivial representation of the Ree groups ² F ₄(q), q = 2²ⁿ⁺¹ ≥ 8 in odd characteristic to any proper subgroup is reducible. We also determine all triples (K, V, H) such that ${K \in \{^2F_4(2), ^2F_4(2)'\} }We prove that the restriction of any nontrivial representation of the Ree groups ² F ₄(q), q = 2²ⁿ⁺¹ ≥ 8 in odd characteristic to any proper subgroup is reducible. We also determine all triples (K, V, H) such that K ? {²F₄(2), ²F₄(2)￠}{K \in \{^2F_4(2), ^2F_4(2)'\} } , H is a proper subgroup of K, and V is a representation of K in odd characteristic restricting absolutely irreducibly to H.     

A Coupled System of Integrodifferential Equations Arising in Liquidity Risk Model

We study the mathematical aspects of the portfolio/consumption choice problem in a market model with liquidity risk introduced in (Pham and Tankov, Math. Finance, 2006, to appear). In this model, the investor can trade and observe stock prices only at exogenous Poisson arrival times. He may also consume continuously from his cash holdings, and his goal is to maximize his expected utility from consumption. This is a mixed discrete/continuous time stochastic control problem, nonstandard in the literature. We show how the dynamic programming principle leads to a coupled system of Integro-Differential Equations (IDE), and we prove an analytic characterization of this control problem by adapting the concept of viscosity solutions. This coupled system of IDE may be numerically solved by a decoupling algorithm, and this is the topic of a companion paper (Pham and Tankov, Math. Finance, 2006, to appear).     

Sur les égalités du miroir et certaines formes faibles de la conjecture de Greenberg

Let p be an odd prime. For any CM number field K containing a primitive p^th-root of unity, class field theory and Kummer theory put together yield the well known reflection inequality ^+– between the plus and minus parts of the -invariant of K. Greenbergs conjecture asserts that ⁺ is always trivial. We study here a weak form of this conjecture, namely ⁺=^– if and only if ⁺=^–=0.     

On the Relation between Curvature,Diameter, and Volume of a Complete Riemannian Manifold

In this note, we prove that if N is a compact totally geodesic submanifold of a complete Riemannian manifold M, g whose sectional curvature K satisfies the relation K ≥ k > 0, then for any point m ∈ M. In the case where dim M = 2, the Gaussian curvature K satisfies the relation K ≥ k ≥ 0, and γ is of length l, we get Vol (M, g) ≤ if k ≠ 0 and Vol (M, g ≤ 2ldiam (M) if k = 0.__________Published in Ukrains’kyi Matematychnyi Zhurnal, Vol. 56, No. 11, pp. 1576–1583, November, 2004.
