Magnetostatic traps for charged and neutral particles

We have constructed magnetostatic traps from permanent magnets for trapping charged and neutral atoms. Two storage experiments are presented: a compact Penning trap for light ions and magnetic trapping of single neutral atoms. The dynamics of cold neutral atoms and their loss mechanisms in a quadrupole magnetostatic trap are discussed. Modified procedure for the sol–gel processing of indium–tin oxide (ITO) films

Dispersions of crystalline nanoscaled ITO and solutions of amorphous precursors were used for the preparation of transparent conductive films on glass both by large area dip-coating (30 × 30 cm²) and pad-printing. The advantages of both types of coating materials regarding single layer thickness and conductivity were combined by a coating-infiltration procedure. The resulting films showed a specific resistivity down to 1.77 10E−03 Ω cm after treatment in reducing atmosphere and an increased resistance to subsequent storage in air.     

Synthesis of Dithiohemiacetals

An interesting flavour component isolated from the headspace volatiles of beef broth by Brinksman et al.¹ was tentatively identified as 1-methyl-thioethanethiol (1; R¹[dbnd]R¹¹[dbnd]CH₃).     

Synthesis and structure of all-syn-1,2,3,4-tetrafluorocyclohexane

Preparation of the all-syn isomer of 1,2,3,4-tetrafluorocyclohexane is reported; X-ray structural studies shows a conformation with two of the C-F bonds oriented 1,3-diaxial to each other and (19)F-NMR reveals a through space diaxial (4)J(FF) coupling constant of 29 Hz.

Circular differential double diffraction in chiral media

In an optically active liquid the diffraction angle depends on the circular polarization state of the incident light beam. We report the observation of circular differential diffraction in an isotropic chiral medium, and we demonstrate that double diffraction is an alternate means to determine the handedness (enantiomeric excess) of a solution.
