Coexistence of competing predators in a coral reef ecosystem

An analysis is made using a four-dimensional mathematical model where there is a constant rate of flow of input nutrient. An organism is introduced in the model which is growing by taking in that nutrient. Two other predators on that organism are also introduced. The predators at the second and third trophic levels belong to the same species, though of different age groups. The predator at the third trophic level exhibits a distinct cannibalistic attitude to the predator of the second trophic level. Our analysis leads to different thresholds in terms of the model parameters acting as conditions under which the species associated with the system cannot thrive even in the absence of competition. Local stability of the system is obtained when one or more of the predators go extinct. Under appropriate circumstances a positive rest point of the system is obtained. Computer simulations have been carried out to illustrate different analytical results.     

Study of size dependent features of swift heavy ion irradiation in nanosized zinc ferrite

In the present work zinc ferrite nanoparticles of different crystallite size were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag¹⁵⁺ ion beam. The structural and magnetic characterization performed for these samples indicate the presence of size dependent irradiation induced changes in the nanoparticles. The superparamgnetic nanoparticles do not alter their behavior after irradiation; however paramagnetic samples exhibit weak ferrimagnetism in the irradiated specimen. Results obtained from these measurements are in agreement with results obtained from the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.     

Analysis of current voltage characteristics of MWIR homojunction photodiodes for uncooled operation

Dark currents n⁺/ν/p⁺ Hg_0.69Cd_0.31Te mid wave infrared photodiodes were measured at room temperature. The diodes exhibited negative differential resistance at room-temperature, but with increasing leakage currents as a function of reverse bias. The current–voltage characteristics were simulated and fitted by incorporating trap assisted tunneling via traps and Shockley–Read–Hall generation recombination process due to dislocations in the carrier transport equations. The thermal suppression of carriers was simulated by taking energy level of trap (E_t), trap density (N_t) and the doping concentrations of n⁺ and ν regions as fitting parameters. Values of E_t and N_t were 0.78E_g and ～6–9 × 10¹⁴ cm^?3 respectively for most of the diodes. Variable temperature current voltage measurements on variable area diode array (VADA) structures confirmed the fact that variation in zero bias resistance area product (R₀A) is related to g–r processes originating from variation in concentration and kind of defects that intersect a junction area.     

Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of the volatile components of Ageratina adenophora Spreng., growing in the Canary Islands

The essential oil of Ageratina adenophora Spreng., growing in the Canary Islands was analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 78 volatile compounds was identified and p-cymene (11.6%) was the major component in the oil. The sesquiterpene fraction (44.3%) was higher than the monoterpene one (32.1%).     

Derivation of muon spectrum at high energies from the recent JACEE primary cosmic-ray spectrum using Fermilab data on meson production

Summary The energy spectrum of sea level muons in the range (10²÷10⁴) GeV has been calculated from the latest directly measured JACEE primary spectrum using Fermilab results on pp→π^± X and pp→K^± X inclusive reactions. The conventional pion atmospheric diffusion equation after Bugaevet al. has been used in this analysis to account the flux of muons emerged from the multiple generation of mesons in air. The derived muon spectrum has been compared with the earlier magnetic spectrograph data of Durham and Kiel groups. The latest BAKSAN scintillator telescope data is well in agreement with the calculated integral spectrum originated from the meson decays in the range (1÷10⁴) GeV.     

Visibility with One Reflection

We extend the concept of the polygon visible from a source point S in a simple polygon by considering visibility with two types of reflection, specular and diffuse. In specular reflection a light ray reflects from an edge of the polygon according to the rule: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. In diffuse reflection a light ray reflects from an edge of the polygon in all inward directions. Several geometric and combinatorial properties of visibility polygons under these two types of reflection are described, when at most one reflection is permitted. We show that the visibility polygon Vs(S) under specular reflection may be nonsimple, while the visibility polygon Vd(S) under diffuse reflection is always simple. We present a Θ(n ² ) worst-case bound on the combinatorial complexity of both Vs(S) and Vd(S) and describe simple O(n ² log ² n) time algorithms for constructing the sets. A study of plasma filled parallel plate waveguide with one boundary corrugated

Warm plasma theory is used to investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma filled parallel plate waveguide with one boundary plate corrugated. Dispersion relations for TE- and TM-modes are derived and it is found that the propagation of TE-modes is unaffected by corrugation of one boundary plane while the propagation of TM-modes is affected by it. For TM-modes the wave numberk depends on the frequency ta as well as on the distance through which the wave is propagated.The authors take the opportunity to thank Professor M. L. Amperometric determination of 2-benzothiazole sulphenamide accelerators

A simple method for the amperometric estimation of N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide, N-dicyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide, 2-(morpholinothio)benzothiazole and N-tert.-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide is reported. The results are obtained within 5 min and are correct within +/- 2.0%.
