Membrane detection of nanogram amounts of formate dehydrogenase

A method for the detection of nanogram amounts of formate dehydrogenase on membranes was developed. The optimization of the method was carried out for determination of the best mediator concentration and tetranitrotetrazolium blue. It was found that 5-methyl-phenazil methosulfate is a more effective mediator than phenazine methosulfate. Different types of membranes were tested and it was shown that nitrocellulose membrane provides a low background and the highest sensitivity. Under optimal conditions the detection limit was 15 ng of the enzyme in the probe.     

The possibility of using screened coulomb potentials in calculating asymptotic normalization coefficients

The dependence of asymptotic normalization coefficients of nuclear wave functions on methods for taking Coulomb interaction into account is studied. Calculations are performed both with the total Coulomb potential and with the Coulomb potential truncated at large distances. Both sharp and smooth truncation is used.     

Coulomb-nuclear interference for inelastic deuteron scattering

The interference between Coulomb excitation and nuclear excitation has been observed for ^{54, 56}Fe, ⁶⁰Ni, ¹¹⁴Cd, ¹⁵²Sm, and ¹⁹²Os by measuring excitation functions of elastic and inelastic deuteron scattering at back angles. The interference is strongly constructive, indicating a predominantly imaginary nuclear form factor. DWBA calculations using the collective model, although predicting constructive interference, are unable to predict the magnitude of the observed effect.     

Synthesis of pyrimidin-2-ylaminophosphonic di(ethyleneamide) (fosfemid) labeled at the phosphorus atom

Photonic band gap architectures for holographic lithography

Using symmetry considerations, we identify three families of large photonic band-gap (PBG) architectures defined by the isointensity surfaces of four beam laser interference. For particular choices of beam intensities, directions, and polarizations, we obtain a diamondlike crystal, a novel body-centered cubic architecture, and a simple cubic structure with PBG to center frequency ratios of 25%, 21%, and 11%, respectively, when the isointensity surface defines a silicon (dielectric constant of 11.9) to air boundary.     

Photonic band gaps based on tetragonal lattices of slanted pores

We describe broad new classes of three-dimensional (3D) structures which, when made of silicon, exhibit robust 3D photonic band gaps of up to 25% of the gap center frequency. The proposed photonic crystals are readily amenable to very high precision microfabrication using established techniques such as x-ray lithography and template inversion. Each architecture consists of a set of oriented cylindrical pores emanating from a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice mask with a two-point basis. Large bandwidth, microcircuits for light may be incorporated within the resulting photonic band gaps using an intercalated 2D photonic crystal layer.     

QCD analysis of structure functions in terms of Jacobi polynomials

A new method of QCD-analysis of singlet and nonsinglet structure functions based on their expansion in orthogonal Jacobi polynomials is proposed. An accuracy of the method is studied and its application is demonstrated using the structure functionF ₂(x, Q ²) obtained by the EMC Collaboration from measurements with an iron target.
