Determination of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and its hydrolysis and chlorohydroxy derivatives by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry

European Legislation establishes that the sum of the migration levels of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), its hydrolysis (BADGE.H2O and BADGE.2H2O) and chlorohydroxy (BADGE.HCl, BADGE.2HCl and BADGE.H2O.HCl) derivatives shall not exceed the limit of 1 mg/kg in foodstuffs or food simulants. A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method combined with mass spectrometry detection using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) is developed for the separation, quantification and identification of the interesting compounds. Quantification of the analytes was carried out in the single ion recording mode, once their characteristic masses were selected from their full spectra, by using an external calibration. The optimised method was suitable for the migration evaluation of these compounds in different samples.     

Admittance measurements of adsorption properties of 2,2′-bipyridine complexes: Part I. Cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes in aqueous solutions

The complex [Co bipy₃]²⁺ in aqueous perchlorate solution yields on the d.c. polarogramthree adsorption type pre-waves and a main reduction wave at ?1.2 V (SCE) corresponding to the reduction to monovalent complex. From admittance measurements and other results it can be concluded that two most positive pre-waves at ?0.2 V and ?0.5 V (SCE) are of non-faradaic nature being related to the adsorption of the complex with specifically adsorbed anions of the supporting electrolyte with the formation of a compact adsorbed layer of much lower interfacial capacity. The most negative pre-wave at ?0.9 V just preceding the main wave corresponds to the reduction of the adsorbed complex. The main wave at ?1.2 V is distorted by the adsorption of reaction products. Very similar and also strong adsorption-coupled interaction was found with divalent nickel trisbipyridine complex.     

Analytical aspects of capillary gas chromatography of lower fatty acids [up to C18]

The principal aspects influencing analytical capillary gas chromatography of fatty acids up to C18 have been evaluated. Selected fundamental problems of interlaboratory exchange of retention data were problems of defined temperature in commercial thermostated air baths, of capillary tubing, and of stationary phases. A modification of commercial thermostats has been proposed in order to secure a defined temperature for glass capillary columns. It has been found that retention data of fatty-acid methyl esters can be measured under standard conditions with the same accuracy as retention data of hydrocarbons on squalane. Metal capillary columns coated with Apiezon L were found to be unsuitable for the analysis of fatty-acid methyl esters when compared with the results of their quantitative analysis in packed Apiezon L and polar capillary columns. Possibilities of a nontraditional statistical evaluation of the results of measurements are suggested. A program in FORTRAN IV language is given for the calculation of Kovats' retention indices for fatty-acid methyl esters.     

Effects of aliphatic acids, furfural, and phenolic compounds on Debaryomyces hansenii CCMI 941

Debaryomyces hansenii is a polyol overproducing yeast that can have a potential use for upgrading lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Therefore, the establishment of its tolerance to metabolic inhibitors found in hydrolysates is of major interest. We studied the effects of selected aliphatic acids, phenolic compounds, and furfural. Acetic acid favored biomass production for concentrations <6.0 g/L. Formic acid was more toxic than acetic acid and induced xylitol accumulation (maximum yield of 0.21 g/g of xylose). All tested phenolics strongly decreased the specific growth rate. Increased toxicity was found for hydroquinone, syringaldehyde, and 4-methylcatechol and was correlated to the compound’s hydrophobicity. Increasing the amount of furfural led to longer lag phases and had a detrimental effect on specific growth rate and biomass productivity.     

Selective determination of trimethylamine in air by liquid chromatography using solid phase extraction cartridges for sampling

The selective determination of trimethylamine (TMA) in air by liquid chromatography is reported. Sampling is effected by flushing air through C18-packed solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges at a flow rate of 15 mL/min for 15 min. Next, TMA is desorbed from the cartridges and injected into the chromatographic system. The analyte is then selectively retained on a precolumn (20 mm x 2.1 mm i.d., packed with 30 microm, Hypersil C18 phase), and derivatized on-line by injecting 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC). Finally, the TMA-FMOC derivative is transferred to the analytical column (125 mm x 4 mm i.d., LiChrospher 100 RP18, 5 microm), and monitored at 262 nm. The method was applied to the measurement of TMA in air in the 0.25-2.5 microg interval (equivalent to concentrations of TMA of 1.1-11 mg/m3), providing good linearity, reproducibility and accuracy. The mean recovery of TMA was (96 +/- 7%) (n = 12), and the limit of detection was 0.05 microg. The proposed procedure allows the selective determination of TMA in the presence of other primary and secondary short-chain aliphatic amines.     

Stereoselective syntheses of 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-octitols and novel tetrahydroxyindolizidines

A new route for the preparation of four new indolizidines, (1R,2S,6S,7S,8aS)- and (1R,2S,6R,7R,8aS)-1,2,6,7-tetrahydroxyindolizidine (30 and 32) and (1S,2R,7S,8S,8aR)- and (1S,2R,7R,8R,8aR)-1,2,7,8-tetrahydroxyindolizidine (44 and 46), is reported. The synthesis is based on Knoevenagel homologation of the readily available enantiomerically pure pyrrolidin-carbaldehydes 13 and 37followed by asymmetric dihydroxylation of the subsequent alkenyl pyrrolidines and cyclization of the corresponding imino-octitols. The new indolizidines and their precursors (imino-octitols 20, 25, 26) and indolizidinones 28a and 28b have been tested for inhibitory activities toward 26 glycosidases. The enzymatic inhibition of trans-7-hydroxy-d-(-)-swainsonine (44) toward alpha-mannosidases is similar to that described for trans-7-hydroxy-l-(+)-swainsonine (11b) toward naringinase (alpha-l-rhamnosidase from Penicillium decumbens).     

Extraction of cesium from water into nitrobenzene using hydrogen dicarbollylcobaltate in the presence of p-nonylphenylnonaethylene glycol

The extraction of cesium by a nitrobenzene solution of hydrogen dicarbollylcobaltate (H⁺B^-) in the presence of Slovafol 909 (p-nonylphenylnonaethylene glycol, L) has been investigated. The equilibrium data have been explained assuming that the complexes HL⁺, HL₂ ⁺, CsL⁺ and CsL₂ ⁺ are extracted into the organic phase. The values of extraction and stability constants of the species in nitrobenzene saturated with water have been determined.     

A pyrazine bis‐adduct of a binuclear rhodium(II) carboxylate containing 3,4,5‐triethoxybenzoate as the ­equatorial ligand

The title compound, tetrakis(μ‐3,4,5‐triethoxy­benzoato‐κ²O:O′)­bis­[(pyrazine‐κN)­rhodium(II)](Rh—Rh), [Rh₂(C₁₃H₁₇O₅)₄(C₄H₄N₂)₂], crystallizes on an inversion centre in the triclinic space group . The equatorial carboxyl­ate ligands bridge the two Rh^II atoms, giving a binuclear lantern‐like structure. The pyrazine mol­ecules occupy the two axial coordination sites. The phenyl rings are tilted by ca 10° with respect to the attached carboxyl­ate groups. The pyrazine planes have a torsion angle of ca 19° around the Rh—N bond with respect to the plane of the nearer carboxyl­ate group and are not coplanar with the Rh—Rh bond.     

Carbocyclic analogues of nucleosides from bis-(Hydroxymethyl)-cyclopentane: synthesis,antiviral and cytostatic activities of adenosine,inosine and uridine analogues

Six new carbocyclic nucleosides were prepared by constructing a purine base (in compounds 9-11) or pyrimidine base (in 6-8) on the amino groups of (+/-)-(1 beta,2 alpha,4 beta)-4-amino-1,2-cyclopentanedimethanol (4) and (+/-)-(1 beta,3 alpha,4 beta)-4-amino-1,3-cyclopentanedimethanol (5), and their activities against a variety of viruses and tumour cell lines were determined.     

Extraction of Pb2+ with sodium dicarbollylcobaltate in the presence of 15-crown-5

From extraction experiments with ²² Na as a tracer, the exchange extraction constant corresponding to the equilibrium Pb²⁺ (aq)+2 NaL⁺ (nb)PbL₂ ²⁺ (nb)+2 Na⁺ (aq) in the two-phase water-nitrobenzene system (L = 15-crown-5; aq = aqueous phase, nb = nitrobenzene phase) was evaluated as log K_ex (Pb²⁺ , 2NaL⁺ ) = 4.7±0.1. Moreover, the stability constant of the complex PbL₂ ²⁺ in nitrobenzene saturated with water was calculated for a temperature of 25 °C as log _nb (PbL₂ ²⁺ ) = 17.9±0.1.
