We lay out an experiment to realize time-reversal invariant topological insulators in alkali atomic gases. We introduce an original method to synthesize a gauge field in the near field of an atom chip, which effectively mimics the effects of spin-orbit coupling and produces quantum spin-Hall states. We also propose a feasible scheme to engineer sharp boundaries where the hallmark edge states are localized. Our multiband system has a large parameter space exhibiting a variety of quantum phase transitions between topological and normal insulating phases. Because of their remarkable versatility, cold-atom systems are ideally suited to realize topological states of matter and drive the development of topological quantum computing.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a general mechanism of disorder-induced order in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, analogous to corresponding effects established for XY spin models. We show that a random Raman coupling induces a relative phase of pi/2 between the two BECs and that the effect is robust. We demonstrate it in one, two, and three dimensions at T=0 and present evidence that it persists at small T>0. Applications to phase control in ultracold spinor condensates are discussed.  相似文献

This paper is about “strong” ideals on small cardinals. It is shown that a typical property of large cardinal measures does not transfer to these ideals. More specifically, that precipitous ideals onP ω1λ spaces may not project down to precipitous ideals on “smaller”P ω1λ′ spaces. Undesirable phototoxic and photoallergic reactions accompanying a justified increased use of sunscreen active ingredients within cosmetic products have encouraged the development of new products safer for human use. The sol-gel microencapsulation technology developed utilizes an interfacial polymerization process, allowing for the achievement of transparent silica glass microcapsules with sizes ranging between 0.3–3 microns and a characteristic core-shell structure. Within the sol-gel microcapsule structure a UV absorber core, constituting roughly 80% of the final product weight, is enclosed within a silica shell. These advanced sunscreen actives are then incorporated into a suitable cosmetic vehicle to achieve high Sun Protection Factors (SPF), while affording an improved safety profile, as the penetration of the UV absorbers is markedly reduced.  相似文献

We study low temperature properties of a spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized kagomé lattice. The case of two fermions per trimer is described by a quantum spin 1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings depending on the bond directions. Using exact diagonalizations we show that the system exhibits nonstandard properties of a quantum spin-liquid crystal, combining a planar antiferromagnetic order with an exceptionally large number of low-energy excitations.  相似文献

We investigate the distribution of Stokes pulse energies in the transient nonlinear regime of stimulated Raman scattering. Nonlinear effects lead to a stabilization of Stokes pulse energies. The character of the transition from the chaotic linear regime to the nonlinear regime is studied in detail. The results compare nicely with recent experiments of Walmsey and Raymer.  相似文献

We propose a method to probe time-dependent correlations of nontrivial observables in many-body ultracold lattice gases. The scheme uses a quantum nondemolition matter-light interface, first to map the observable of interest on the many-body system into the light and then to store coherently such information into an external system acting as a quantum memory. Correlations of the observable at two (or more) instances of time are retrieved with a single final measurement that includes the readout of the quantum memory. Such a method brings to reach the study of dynamics of many-body systems in and out of equilibrium by means of quantum memories in the field of quantum simulators.  相似文献
