Most studies investigating mental numerical processing involve adult participants and little is known about the functioning of these systems in children. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of numeracy and the influence of age on these correlates with a group of adults and a group of third graders who had average to above average mathematical ability. Participants performed simple and complex versions of exact and approximate calculation tasks while in the magnet. Like adults, children activated a network of brain regions in the frontal and parietal lobes during the calculation tasks, and they recruited additional brain regions for the more complex versions of the tasks. However, direct comparisons between adults and children revealed significant differences in level of activation across all tasks. In particular, patterns of activation in the parietal lobe were significantly different as a function of age. Findings support previous claims that the parietal lobe becomes more specialized for arithmetic tasks with age. 相似文献

We present here the first 3D homonuclear/heteronuclear correlation experiment applied to quadrupolar nuclei and making use of the sole scalar J-coupling. This experiment, based on the 2D-Homonuclear-Heteronuclear Single Quantum Correlation (H-HSQC) experiment, uses a relayed transfer from the (27)Al central transition to neighbouring (31)P spins and to the central transition of a second (27)Al. It confirms the correlation map characterizing the two (27)Al and the (31)P NMR signatures of (27)Al-O-(31)P-O-(27)Al chemically bonded molecular motifs. 相似文献

Despite the enormous interest in the properties of graphene and the potential of graphene nanostructures in electronic applications, the study of quantum-confined states in atomically well-defined graphene nanostructures remains an experimental challenge. Here, we study graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with well-defined edges in the zigzag direction, grown by chemical vapor deposition on an Ir(111) substrate by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We measure the atomic structure and local density of states of individual GQDs as a function of their size and shape in the range from a couple of nanometers up to ca. 20 nm. The results can be quantitatively modeled by a relativistic wave equation and atomistic tight-binding calculations. The observed states are analogous to the solutions of the textbook "particle-in-a-box" problem applied to relativistic massless fermions. 相似文献

We consider dark matter annihilation into standard model particles and show that the least detectable final states, namely, neutrinos, define an upper bound on the total cross section. Calculating the cosmic diffuse neutrino signal, and comparing it to the measured terrestrial atmospheric neutrino background, we derive a strong and general bound. This can be evaded if the annihilation products are dominantly new and truly invisible particles. Our bound is much stronger than the unitarity bound at the most interesting masses, shows that dark matter halos cannot be significantly modified by annihilations, and can be improved by a factor of 10-100 with existing neutrino experiments. 相似文献

An anisotropic adaptation process is applied to a three-dimensional incompressible two-phase flow solver. The solver uses a level set/finite element method on unstructured tetrahedral meshes. We show how the level set function can be used to build an anisotropic mesh with good properties. Some computations with a strong transient character and large densities ratios (1/1000) are presented. We show that the efficiency of the computations can be deeply enhanced by mesh adaptations. 相似文献

A comparison of Auger structures observed on the energy distributions of secondary electrons emitted from Mg and A1 solid targets bombarded by either light particles (H+ and He+) or heavy ions (Ne+, Ar+, …) is presented. With incident protons, it essentially appears a broad peak corresponding to a L23VV transition and a weak shoulder due to the surface and bulk plasmon excitation. The Auger structures obtained with heavy ions are richer and the peaks which compose it are sharper. Such atomic-like structures correspond to Auger transitions from excited (with one or two L23 holes) moving recoiling atoms. The experimental L23 Mg and A1 ionization cross sections were determined from Auger spectra. In H+?Mg (or A1) collisions our results are in good agreement with the theoretical values calculated in a PWBA model. In the case of heavy ion-target interactions, we compared the experimental measurements with ionization cross section calculations obtained in a Landau-Zener model. 相似文献

In this paper we present a method to solve numerically elliptic problems with multi-scale data using multiple levels of not necessarily nested grids. The method consists in calculating successive corrections to the solution in patches whose discretizations are not necessarily conforming. It resembles the FAC method (see Math. Comp. 46 (174) (1986) 439–456) and its convergence is obtained by a domain decomposition technique (see Math. Comp. 57 (195) (1991) 1–21).
