Complex polymer architectures through dimethoxymethyl 1,1‐diphenylethylene derivatives

The reactions of polystyryllithium and potassium on dimethoxymethyl 1,1‐diphenylethylene derivatives were studied in different solvents. In a polar medium, A₃ and A₆ star types were formed according to the stoichiometry, whereas in a nonpolar medium, hyperbranched structures were synthesized. An efficient phosphine-free palladium coupling for the synthesis of new 2-arylbenzo[b]thiophenes

Straightforward and rapid access to 2-arylbenzo[b]thiophenes has been developed. It involved a catalytic coupling of 3-activated benzo[b]thiophenes with several aryl halides in the presence of a phosphine-free palladium system. In case of fragile functional groups such as aldehydes, a quaternary ammonium was used as an additive as with the other substrates, the coupling performed better and faster in the presence of a crown ether, the best one being DCH-18-C-6, with good yields and low reaction times. This method would provide a direct access to novel structures of biological interest.     

Rate of Convergence of a Stochastic Particle System for the Smoluchowski Coagulation Equation

By continuing the probabilistic approach of Deaconu et al. (2001), we derive a stochastic particle approximation for the Smoluchowski coagulation equations. A convergence result for this model is obtained. Under quite stringent hypothesis we obtain a central limit theorem associated with our convergence. In spite of these restrictive technical assumptions, the rate of convergence result is interesting because it is the first obtained in this direction and seems to hold numerically under weaker hypothesis. This result answers a question closely connected to the Open Problem 16 formulated by Aldous (1999).     

Levy area for the free Brownian motion: existence and non-existence

This note extends the work of Capitaine (J. Funct. Anal. 179 (1) (2001) 153) on the Levy area process for the free Brownian motion in two directions. First, we reprove that a Levy area for the Free Brownian motion exists in the Von Neumann tensor product, by exhibiting a non-commutative Burkholder-Davis-Gundy type inequality. Then, we show that there does not exist a Levy area in the projective tensor product.     

Block copolymers of acrylic acid and butyl acrylate prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization: Synthesis,characterization, and use in emulsion polymerization

Amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(acrylic acid‐b‐butyl acrylate) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in a one‐pot reaction. These copolymers were characterized by NMR, static and dynamic light scattering, tensiometry, and size exclusion chromatography. The aggregation characteristics of the copolymers corresponded to those theoretically predicted for a star micelle. In a butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate emulsion polymerization, low amounts of these copolymers could stabilize latices with solid contents up to 50%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
