Using a simulation technique introduced recently, we study winding clusters in percolation on the torus and the Möbius strip for different aspect ratios. The asynchronous parallelization of the simulation makes very large system and sample sizes possible. Our high accuracy results are fully consistent with predictions from conformal field theory. The numerical results for the Möbius strip and the number distribution of winding clusters on the torus await theoretical explanation. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind.  相似文献

We present differences in the mechanical behavior of nanoscale gold and molybdenum single crystals. A significant strength increase is observed as the size is reduced to 100 nm. Both nanocrystals exhibit discrete strain bursts during plastic deformation. We postulate that they arise from significant differences in the dislocation behavior. Dislocation starvation is the predominant mechanism of plasticity in nanoscale fcc crystals, while junction formation and hardening characterize bcc plasticity. A statistical analysis of strain bursts is performed as a function of size and compared with stochastic models.  相似文献

We investigate the geometry of the moduli space of NN vortices on line bundles over a closed Riemann surface ΣΣ of genus g>1g>1, in the little explored situation where 1≤N<g1N<g. In the regime where the area of the surface is just large enough to accommodate NN vortices (which we call the dissolving limit), we describe the relation between the geometry of the moduli space and the complex geometry of the Jacobian variety of ΣΣ. For N=1N=1, we show that the metric on the moduli space converges to a natural Bergman metric on ΣΣ. When N>1N>1, the vortex metric typically degenerates as the dissolving limit is approached, the degeneration occurring precisely on the critical locus of the Abel–Jacobi map of ΣΣ at degree NN. We describe consequences of this phenomenon from the point of view of multivortex dynamics.  相似文献

We extend a recent synchronization analysis of exact finite-state sources to nonexact sources for which synchronization occurs only asymptotically. Although the proof methods are quite different, the primary results remain the same. We find that an observer’s average uncertainty in the source state vanishes exponentially fast and, as a consequence, an observer’s average uncertainty in predicting future output converges exponentially fast to the source entropy rate.  相似文献

Gradient surfaces allow rapid, high-throughput investigations and systematic studies in many disparate fields, including biology, tribology and adhesion. We describe a novel method for the fabrication of material-independent morphology gradients, involving a two-step process of particle erosion followed by a chemical polishing procedure that preferentially removes features with a small radius of curvature as a function of time. Gradients are fabricated on aluminium surfaces, but they may be readily transferred to other materials via a replication technique, which allows for the production of identical roughness gradient samples with any chosen surface chemistry. The gradients have been characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry. Standard roughness parameters (Ra, Rq, Rz, Sm and Sk) were calculated from optical profilometry data. The roughness has also been assessed over different wavelength windows by means of a fast Fourier transformation approach.  相似文献

We predict an anomalous bias dependence of the spin transfer torque parallel to the interface, Tparallel, in magnetic tunnel junctions, which can be selectively tuned by the exchange splitting. It may exhibit a sign reversal without a corresponding sign reversal of the bias or even a quadratic bias dependence. We demonstrate that the underlying mechanism is the interplay of spin currents for the ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) configurations, which vary linearly (quadratically) with bias, respectively, due to the symmetric (asymmetric) nature of the barrier. The spin transfer torque perpendicular to interface exhibits a quadratic bias dependence.  相似文献
