Catalytic asymmetric synthesis of both syn- and anti-3,5-dihydroxy esters: application to 1,3-polyol/alpha-pyrone natural product synthesis

[reaction: see text] We describe a catalytic asymmetric synthesis of both syn- and anti-3,5-dihydroxy esters. The method relies upon catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of alpha,beta-unsaturated imidazolides and amides, using lanthanide-BINOL complexes, and diastereoselective reduction of ketones. The method was applied to the enantioselective syntheses of 1,3-polyol/alpha-pyrone natural products 9a, 9b, and strictifolione (10). The absolute stereochemistry of 9a and 9b was also determined.     

Backward Terahertz Radiation from a Two-Color Femtosecond Laser Filament

A change in the quasistatic magnetic susceptibility in thin plates of iron borate (FeBO₃), which is a weak ferromagnet, has been revealed at adsorption of water molecules. The measurements have been performed at room temperature with the use of the magneto-optical Faraday effect. The change of the susceptibility in saturated water vapors is about 30%. The observed effect is reversible. The time of establishing the susceptibility after the introduction of water vapors is 1.5 min, which is twice as large as the time of establishing the susceptibility after the evacuation. The effect is explained by the appearance of uniaxial surface magnetic anisotropy in the basal plane because of the adsorption of water molecules.     

Multiple Ca(2+) environments in silicate glasses by high-resolution (43)Ca MQMAS NMR technique at high and ultra-high (21.8 T) magnetic fields

We here show the (43)Ca 5QMAS NMR spectra at high field (16.4 T) and the first 7QMAS spectrum at ultra-high field (21.8 T) for geologically important Ca-containing glasses. The high-resolution MQMAS spectra present a clear evidence of multiple Ca sites in the amorphous structures that have never been identified by other analytical methods. The present study suggests that the Ca(2+) ions are mainly in 7- and 8-fold coordination sites. This will offer valuable insights for dynamic properties of magmatic liquids. The MQMAS NMR technique at high magnetic field is a unique tool to understand the detailed structural information on a specific element in solids including organic and inorganic compounds.     

Carboxylation of indoles and pyrroles with CO2 in the presence of dialkylaluminum halides

The Lewis acid-mediated carboxylation of arenes with CO₂ has been successfully applied to 1-substituted indoles and pyrroles by using dialkylaluminum chlorides instead of aluminum trihalides. Thus, the carboxylation of 1-methylindoles, 1-benzyl-, and 1-phenylpyrroles proceeds regioselectively with the aid of an equimolar amount of Me₂AlCl under CO₂ pressure (3.0 MPa) at room temperature to afford the corresponding indole-3-carboxylic acids and pyrrole-2-carboxylic acids in 61-85% yields, while the same treatment of 1,2,5-trimethylpyrrole affords the 3-carboxylic acid in 52% yield.     

Rearrangement of 4,5α-epoxymorphinan derivatives with carbamoylepoxy rings provide novel oxazatricyclodecane structures

We describe the rearrangement of a carbamoylepoxy 4,5α-epoxymorphinan derivative that provided a novel 4,5α-epoxymorphinan derivative with an oxazatricyclodecane structure via an oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane intermediate. We proposed the mechanism of the rearrangement reaction based on results observed in different deprotonation conditions. Epimerization occurred during rearrangement under reversible, but not irreversible, deprotonation conditions. The rearrangement product had a novel fundamental structure with moderate affinities for opioid receptors (K_i (μ)=47.7 nM, K_i (δ)=174.6 nM, and K_i (κ)=248.1 nM). Thus, the rearrangement products might have high potency as opioid ligands.     

Analysis of splice loss in single-mode fibres using a Gaussian field approximation

By using a Gaussian field approximation to the fundamental mode in a single-mode fibre, a very simple formula is derived for the splice loss in the two fibres when transverse, longitudinal and angular misalignments exist simultaneously. It is shown that the effects of the three misalignments on the splice loss are more significant for step-index fibres than for parabolic-index fibres, and also that matching oil in the gap between the fibres is effective for the end separation, but produces a reverse effect for the tilt. Calculated coupling efficiency between step-index fibres is compared with the experimental data reported so far, and good agreement between them is observed.     

Three-Quark Potential in SU(3) Lattice QCD

The static three-quark ( 3Q) potential is studied in SU(3) lattice QCD with 12(3)x24 and beta = 5.7 at the quenched level. From the 3Q Wilson loop, 3Q ground-state potential V(3Q) is extracted using the smearing technique for ground-state enhancement. With accuracy better than a few percent, V(3Q) is well described by a sum of a constant, the two-body Coulomb term, and the three-body linear confinement term sigma(3Q)L(min), with L(min) the minimal value of total length of color flux tubes linking the three quarks. Comparing with the Q-&Qmacr; potential, we find a universal feature of the string tension, sigma(3Q) approximately sigma(Q&Qmacr;), and the OGE result for Coulomb coefficients, A(3Q) approximately 1 / 2A(Q&Qmacr;).
