Let be a prime, and k=(p+1)/2. In this paper we prove that two things happen if and only if the class number . One is the non-integrality at p of a certain trace of normalised critical values of symmetric square L-functions, of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms of level one and weight k. The other is the existence of such a form g whose Hecke eigenvalues satisfy “dihedral” congruences modulo a divisor of p (e.g. p=23, k=12, g=Δ). We use the Bloch-Kato conjecture to link these two phenomena, using the Galois interpretation of the congruences to produce global torsion elements which contribute to the denominator of the conjectural formula for an L-value. Previous research extending over a few decades has established that multiplicatively large sets (in any of several interpretations) must have substantial additive structure. We investigate here the question of how much multiplicative structure can be found in additively large sets. For example, we show that any translate of a set of finite sums from an infinite sequence must contain all of the initial products from another infinite sequence. And, as a corollary of a result of Renling Jin, we show that if A and B have positive upper Banach density, then A+B contains all of the initial products from an infinite sequence. We also show that if a set has a complement which is not additively piecewise syndetic, then any translate of that set is both additively and multiplicatively large in several senses.We investigate whether a subset of N with bounded gaps—a syndetic set—must contain arbitrarily long geometric progressions. We believe that we establish that this is a significant open question.  相似文献

This research explored students’ views of geometric objects through the implementation of a curriculum module that allowed them to explore the relationships between transformational geometry and linear algebra. The majority of the students were middle and secondary mathematics education majors enrolled in a one-semester geometry course that is aimed at prospective teachers. A preponderance of the evidence suggests that the participating students, for the most part, viewed isometries operationally and viewed geometric objects (triangle, etc.) as “perceived.” Results also suggest that these two views influenced the students’ abilities to understand and to construct geometric proofs in transformational geometry.  相似文献

We propose an answer to a question raised by F. Burstall: Is there any interesting theory of isothermic submanifolds of ? n of dimension greater than two? A smooth map (f 1,??,f n ) from an open subset ${\mathcal{O}}$ of ? n to the space of m×n matrices is called an n-tuple of isothermic k n-submanifolds in ? m if each f i is an isothermic k immersion, $(f_{i})_{x_{j}}$ is parallel to $(f_{1})_{x_{j}}$ for all 1??i,j??n, and there exists an orthonormal frame (e 1,??,e n ) and a GL(n)-valued map (a ij ) such that $\mathrm{d}f_{i}= \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij} e_{j}\,\mathrm {d} x_{j}$ for 1??i??n. Isothermic1 surfaces in ?3 are the classical isothermic surfaces in ?3. Isothermic k submanifolds in ? m are invariant under conformal transformations. We show that the equation for n-tuples of isothermic k n-submanifolds in ? m is the $\frac{O(m+n-k,k)}{O(m)\times O(n-k,k)}$ -system, which is an integrable system. Methods from soliton theory can therefore be used to construct Christoffel, Ribaucour, and Lie transforms, and to describe the moduli spaces of these geometric objects and their loop group symmetries.  相似文献

Motivated by constraint-based CAD software, we develop the foundation for the rigidity theory of a very general model: the body-and-cad structure, composed of rigid bodies in 3D constrained by pairwise coincidence, angular and distance constraints. We identify 21 relevant geometric constraints and develop the corresponding infinitesimal rigidity theory for these structures. The classical body-and-bar rigidity model can be viewed as a body-and-cad structure that uses only one constraint from this new class.As a consequence, we identify a new, necessary, but not sufficient, counting condition for minimal rigidity of body-and-cad structures: nested sparsity. This is a slight generalization of the well-known sparsity condition of Maxwell.  相似文献

Reaction of C5H4(SiMe3)2 with Mo(CO)6 yielded [(η5-C5H3(SiMe3)2)Mo(CO)3]2, which on addition of iodine gave [(η5-C5H3(SiMe3)2Mo(CO)3I]. Carbonyl displacement by a range of ligands: [L = P(OMe)3, P(OPri)3,P(O-o-tol)3, PMe3, PMe2Ph, PMePh2, PPh3, P(m-tol)3] gave the new complexes [(η5-C5H3(SiMe3)2 MO(CO)2(L)I]. For all the trans isomer was the dominant, if not exclusive, isomer formed in the reaction. An NOE spectral analysis of [(η5-C5H3(SiMe3)2)Mo(CO)2(L)I] L = PMe2Ph, P(OMe)3] revealed that the L group resided on the sterically uncongested side of the cyclopentadienyl ligand and that the ligand did not access the congested side of the molecule. Quantification of this phenomenon [L = P(OMe)3] was achieved by means of the vertex angle of overlap methodology. This methodology revealed a steric preference with the trans isomer (less congestion of CO than I with an SiMe3 group) being the more stable isomer for L = P(OMe)3.  相似文献
